[css-align][css-gaps] Move the gap properties to the Gaps spec #13089

Closed

Description

@tabatkins

For reasons of "nowhere better to put them at the time", the gap properties currently live in the Align spec. (Alignment can create gaps via distribution, so it wasn't unreasonable for explicit gaps to live there.)

But now we have a Gaps spec, which currently just defines the *-rule properties, but which depends on gaps to exist. We should just move the gap properties to Gaps (and possibly slightly retitle the css-gaps spec to "CSS Gaps", rather than its current more-specific title of "CSS Gap Decorations").

And presumably rename the spec to 'Gaps' rather than 'Gap Decorations'?

The CSS Working Group just discussed [css-align][css-gaps] Move the gap properties to the Gaps spec, and agreed to the following:

    • RESOLVED: move gap properties to css-gap-1 and rename from Gap Decorations to Gaps
The full IRC log of that discussion <JoshT> astearns: [reads TabAtkins first comment]
<JoshT> ... suggestion to move other gap properties into css-gaps spec
    <JoshT> ... any concerns?
    <kbabbitt> +1 support
    <Kurt> +1
    <fantasai> +1
<JoshT> ... are all editors for module sufficient?
<JoshT> RESOLVED: move gap properties to css-gap-1 and rename from Gap Decorations to Gaps
<JoshT> fantasai: could we have the shortcode as css-gutters?
<JoshT> ... gap on its own isn't clear what it's 'gapping'
<fantasai> s/css-gutters/css-gaps, but title as "CSS Gutters"
<JoshT> astearns: gutter could also be unclear
<dbaron> I think a mismatch between the shortname and the title doesn't help anything.
    <Kurt> Could use a poll
<JoshT> ... if you feel strongly, feel free to make another issue
