@scottaohara,

It seems reasonable to me that an author might want to override the implicit cell role of a <td> using ARIA and instead apply a columnheader or rowheader ARIA role.
Should ARIA in HTML allow this?

    as we discussed today, apparently we had the same thought at the same time, since i was working on the PR to address this as you were writing the issue :D
