About the tests, @tannal mentioned this to me this morning and

    https://wpt.fyi/results/mathml/relations/css-styling/attribute-mapping-001.html
    https://wpt.fyi/results/mathml/relations/css-styling/attribute-mapping-002.html

cover the mapping of these attributes to CSS on the <a> element. Probably, we can add more specific tests to check observable behaviors though when <a> is used though.

relations/css-styling/attribute-mapping-*.html iterate MathMLFragments, which includes a. So any tests using it are already testing it. Then, link behaviour and IDL is already covered by the anchor-*, a-* and href-* tests in relations/html5-tree that fred, luke and tannal made.

We were missing some observable behaviour reftests for the MathML attributes of a. I made PR web-platform-tests/wpt#63056 that covers mathcolor, mathbackground, mathsize and displaystyle.

In the meeting we didn’t fully understand what would happen if a MathML generator would replace all mrow elements with a elements regardless if they contained the href attribute.
As a software developer it would be more effective to use only a as this would make the source code shorter and the output (regarded as string) shorter.
