Summary

Closes #16629.

DefinePlugin.runtimeValue(fn) can only use what fn returns synchronously, because the generator runs inside the synchronous parser hooks that drive constant folding, so the value has to be known during the parse. An async generator, or any function returning a promise, was stringified as Object({}) instead of its value, so a define could not come from reading a file or any other async source.

An async generator now resolves before the module is parsed. When a compilation has any async runtime value, the plugin taps NormalModule's beforeParse hook (made async for this) and, for each module about to be parsed, resolves the values that module's source may reference, awaiting them there. The parser hooks then read the resolved value synchronously, as before.

  • Opt in: only async generators (or async: true in the options) are pre-resolved. A value is resolved once per module and key, and only for modules whose source may reference it, so an unused define never runs and its error never fails an unrelated build.
  • The synchronous path keeps its behaviour, caching, and watch invalidation.
  • A promise returned by a generator not declared async throws a clear error instead of emitting broken code.
  • Values reached indirectly (an aliased define, or one an identifier from a loader's AST refers to) resolve too.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. Config cases cover async arrows, async: true, the generator argument, typeof, file dependencies, object/array/dotted keys, indirect references, loader AST, noParse, an error that surfaces, and a promise without async that throws. A watch case covers rebuild invalidation and a dynamic version.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. NormalModule's beforeParse changes from SyncHook to AsyncSeriesHook; existing synchronous taps keep working and this plugin is the only in-tree caller. Synchronous runtimeValue usage is untouched.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The async option on runtimeValue, and that an async generator resolves before parsing. Both are in the JSDoc and reach types.d.ts.

Use of AI

Yes, written with Claude Code. It implemented the change and tests and ran the full local suites; every result stated here was checked against a real run, not taken from the model.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • DefinePlugin.runtimeValue now supports asynchronous value generators, including Promise-returning callbacks and asynchronous file-based values.
    • Async runtime values can access module information and support dependency tracking, nested definitions, and watch-mode updates.
    • Added an option to explicitly identify asynchronous generators.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved error reporting for rejected asynchronous values and Promise-returning generators that are not marked as asynchronous.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for asynchronous definitions, references, dependency updates, parsing behavior, and error handling.

An async runtimeValue generator (or a promise-returning one with
`async: true`) now resolves in NormalModule's beforeParse hook, before
the parser needs it, and is served synchronously at parse time. The
synchronous path is unchanged. A promise returned without `async` throws
a clear error instead of emitting broken code. The beforeParse hook
becomes an AsyncSeriesHook; existing synchronous taps keep working.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

DefinePlugin.runtimeValue now supports asynchronous generators and promise-returning functions. Webpack resolves referenced values before parsing each module. NormalModule.beforeParse now supports asynchronous hooks. New tests cover substitution, errors, references, file dependencies, and watch mode.

Async runtime-value failures still report the affected key and rejection message, but their context is needlessly opaque. This is safe to merge with follow-up, though improving the message will make configuration failures easier to diagnose.

Describe the asynchronous value before annotation.

value is a RuntimeValue, not generated definition code. JSON.stringify(value) omits its function-valued fn property and renders {"options":{},"async":true}. The error still includes the key and rejection message, but this parenthesized value is not useful diagnostic context. Preserve the existing annotation format and pass a descriptive string instead:
