Summary

Three changes to the JavaScript minifier (syntax-printer.js):

  1. Hang fix. A type T = number; or interface I {} statement looped forever in the ported terser parser (terser 5.51 hangs the same way). The TypeScript skippers now run only under experimental_typescript. Otherwise the statement is a normal parse error.

    input before after
type T = number; never returns Unexpected token: name (T)
  2. Built-in fold. The improve phase now evaluates exactly specified built-ins called on literals, assuming built-ins are unmodified, as oxc and swc do: "abc".charAt(1) → "b", Math.max(1, 5, 2) → 5, parseInt("ff", 16) → 255, [1, 2].join("-") → "1-2". It is skipped for:

    • a shadowed global, or a call under with or next to a direct eval;
    • case and trim methods on non-ASCII strings;
    • a call that throws, or a result longer than the call.
  3. Generated tables. tooling/generate-js-data.js writes the folded built-ins into syntax-printer-data.js from @mdn/browser-compat-data. Every member BCD lists for Math, Number, String, Array and the global functions is either folded or left out with a reason. Generation fails if:

    • a BCD bump lists a member that isn't placed yet;
    • a folded one is missing, or wouldn't run on every Node in engines.node. That rule keeps at/replaceAll out, so output doesn't depend on the build's Node.

Real code, 56 swc/terser bench and project files, default minimizer options, against main:

raw gzip
total change −290 B −64 B

3 files got smaller and none bigger. 400 OXC_SMALLER and 7 SWC_SMALLER corpus entries are retired. CPU is unchanged within noise (median 26,663 ms vs 26,535 ms with improve off; the fastest run favoured improve on).

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes.

  • test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js: the hang, plus folded and kept cases for each guard.
  • test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js: the ratchet lists in test/helpers/oxcSmaller.js and test/helpers/swcSmaller.js.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Documented in docs/syntax.md: the improve phase and the generated table, including its @mdn/browser-compat-data source.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The JavaScript syntax printer now folds configured built-in calls on eligible literal inputs, using generated compatibility classifications and safeguards for rebinding, evaluation errors, Unicode behavior, and output size. Skipping TypeScript type and interface statements now requires experimental mode. Tests, comparison records, documentation, and changesets are updated.

Changes

Literal built-in folding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Built-in classification and generated data
tooling/generate-js-data.js, lib/javascript/syntax-printer-data.js, docs/syntax.md
The generator classifies built-ins against browser compatibility data, validates the classifications, and emits tables for the printer. Documentation describes the tables and validation.
Folding calls on constants
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js, docs/syntax.md, .changeset/*
The printer folds eligible built-in calls when improvements and evaluation are enabled. Unit tests cover folded and unchanged calls, and documentation and changesets describe the behavior.
Comparison and corpus records
test/helpers/oxcSmaller.js, test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js
Benchmark reason groups and corpus records change to reflect updated comparisons, built-in folding cases, and Node-version constraints.

TypeScript statement skipping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate TypeScript statement skipping
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
The type and interface statement checks now require experimental TypeScript mode. Tests cover the resulting parser behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c371d

The change restricts evaluation to selected built-ins and literal inputs, limiting its authority. However, array joining can allocate a disproportionately large intermediate string before the size check rejects it. Exposure depends on who can supply source for minification; no remotely accessible minification service is established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Array-literal join is newly eligible for ordinary folding without a pre-invocation output bound. Many constant elements combined with a long literal separator can produce an intermediate string proportional to their product, despite source size growing approximately with their sum. Rejecting the result afterward does not prevent allocation or CPU cost. This can exhaust a minifying process when an attacker can supply source; deployment-level reachability is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated resource path affects the process performing minification and potentially its build job. The inspected path does not establish network access, credential access, cross-tenant exposure, or arbitrary callable execution.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A source supplier can place a used array join expression containing many constant elements and a long literal separator. Both satisfy the folding restrictions, while their combined output can greatly exceed input size. This is a statically inferred allocation-amplification path, not a verified deployment exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Source controls the selected allowlisted operation and literal values, but cannot supply a callable through this lookup. Constructors are excluded, global rebinding is checked, and ordinary invocation exceptions leave the call unchanged.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Exception handling contains ordinary throwing calls, and repeat/padding preflights reject excessive requested lengths. These controls do not bound array-join allocation before execution or undo resource costs already incurred.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Calculate a conservative array-join output bound from literal element lengths and separator length before invoking the host method, and skip folding when that bound exceeds the permitted budget.

Generated code size

Comparing base (7963bb8) to head (518f009). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8337 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2308 test(s), 8337 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

- Around line 19462-19485: Update foldBuiltInCall’s guard before invoking
builtIn.fn to detect relevant ordinary property writes, reusing or extending the
existing mutation analysis so global functions, static properties, and literal
prototype methods are not folded after they may have been modified. Preserve the
current behavior when no relevant mutation is possible.

The improve phase now evaluates a call of an exactly specified built-in on
literal arguments, such as "abc".charAt(1), Math.max(1, 2) or
parseInt("ff", 16), and writes its value where that is no longer, taking
built-ins as the language defines them, as oxc and swc do. It leaves a
call alone under a with or direct eval, a shadowed global, case or white
space outside ASCII, and split, whose array gzips worse than its string.

400 OXC_SMALLER and 7 SWC_SMALLER entries are retired; the few test
programs a fold makes larger gzipped are listed in IMPROVED_YET_BIGGER.
The changesets fold into the pending minifier entries.

…rowser-compat-data

`tooling/generate-js-data.js` now writes the built-ins `improve` evaluates
on literals into `syntax-printer-data.js`. Every member
@mdn/browser-compat-data lists of `Math`, `Number`, `String`, `Array` and
the global functions is placed as folded, or left out with a reason, and a
bump that lists a new one fails generation until it is placed. A folded
built-in must be in every Node `engines.node` allows, so `at` and
`replaceAll` are no longer folded and output no longer depends on the
build's Node; `fromCodePoint` and `normalize` (on ASCII) are now folded.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
… size

A literal count or length such as `"a".repeat(2e8)` built the whole string,
then printed it, before the size check refused it: 2.5 s and 443 MB for one
call. Skip such calls before evaluating, and a longer string before printing.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
The size guard skipped any string method with a large number, so
`"xy".charCodeAt(1e99)` stopped folding; it now covers `repeat`, `padStart`
and `padEnd`, listed by the generator. Record the test262 sources whose
folded calls gzip worse beside the text they repeat.
