Summary

Found by a stateful rebuild fuzzer. Watch mode purges the input file system cache only for the paths the watcher reports, and an edit to a path nobody watches is never reported. So within the cache's 60 s:

// drop `import value from "./module.js"`, then edit module.js and re-add the import
before: value === 1 (old content) after: value === 2

A file deleted while unwatched still built from its cached content, and a file created while unwatched still failed with "Module not found". Each watch call now purges the files and missing paths the previous call watched and this one does not.

Cost per rebuild, watch() on 964 watched files: 2.33 ms → 2.36 ms.

This edits a different place from #21643 and should combine with it.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: watchCases/cache/change-file-while-unwatched (edited, deleted and created paths, each failing alone on main) and a NodeWatchFileSystem unit test for what is and is not purged.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

I used Claude Code to find the bug with a rebuild fuzzer, write the fix and the tests. I reviewed every change myself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Watch mode now reloads files that changed while they were not being watched, so subsequent builds reflect the latest file contents and missing-file status.

NodeWatchFileSystem normalizes and tracks each watch call’s files and missing paths. When the input filesystem supports purge, it purges paths absent from both current sets. Unit tests cover purge behavior, repeated inputs, mutable arrays, and one-shot iterables.
Test files changed while unwatched
test/watchCases/cache/change-file-while-unwatched/*
The cache watch case checks module values, loader data, package entry points, and missing-module errors across watch steps. It uses memory and filesystem cache configurations.

Reported by Code Size #4546 for 8a2d0e0, computed by this pull request's own code.

Generated code size

Comparing base (fa5846c) to head (8a2d0e0). Merging this pull request changes the size of 7 asset(s) whose tests it leaves untouched, moves 1 asset(s) whose tests it edits too and adds 14 new asset(s).

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 7 7 🟢 ↓ -1 B 🟢 ↓ -74 B —
Changed, test edited 1 1 🔴 ↑ +4 B 🟢 ↓ -8 B 🔴 ↑ +2 B
New 2 14 ⚪ added +8.63 KiB ⚪ added +20.95 KiB —

Unchanged — 8587 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

Merging this PR will regress 1 benchmark

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

The input file system cache is purged only for the paths the watcher reports, and an edit to a path nobody watches is never reported. So dropping an import, editing the file and importing it again within 60 s served its old content, a deleted file still built, and a created one stayed missing. Purge the files and missing paths a watch call drops.
A prefix purge scans the whole cache once per path, so a rebuild dropping a 641-file package took 132 ms in watch() against 1.35 ms before; one exact purge of the list takes 1.85 ms. The case now also covers a package.json main, a file a loader reads through this.fs, and the filesystem cache.

Purge directories that a rebuild stops watching.

If a watched context directory drops out of directories, this call does not record or purge it. A file added while that directory is unwatched can leave its cached readdir result stale when a later build uses the directory again. Track dropped directories and invalidate their directory-listing entries alongside dropped files and missing paths. The cached filesystem stores and purges directory listings separately. A caller passing a plain array or a one-shot iterable had it read again later: a path the caller removed after the call was never purged, and the purge consumed an iterator before watchpack got it. Build the lookup once, hand it to both and keep it for the next call. LazySets pass through as they are.

Still failed on bun and deno, need to investigate

The harness turns output.clean on when a case leaves it unset, so whichever of the two compilers emitted second could delete the other's bundle0.js before it was read, which failed on Bun and Deno. Leave clean off, as the other two-compiler cases do.
