Summary

Before rewriting the JavaScript parser we want its AST typed, so mistakes show up in tsc. lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js now declares its nodes as JSDoc typedefs shaped and named like ESTree, plus start/end and an import's phase. Every one is assignable to its @types/estree counterpart.

// before
startNode()                      // any
finishNode(node, "IfStatement")  // any
parseIfStatement(node)           // (any) => any

// after (internally)
startNode() // UnfinishedNode: every node field, each with its real type
finishNode(node, "IfStatement")  // IfStatement
parseIfStatement(node)           // (UnfinishedNode) => IfStatement
main this PR
EXPECTED_ANY in syntax-parser.js 460 10

The node types are internal only. They carry @internal, and tooling/generate-types.js writes an @internal alias as any. It does the same for unions of them and for type parameters bound by one. So types.d.ts keeps main's public signatures: finishNode(node: any, type: string): any still accepts a plugin's own node types. The only types.d.ts diff left renames or reorders aliases it does not export, such as ExpressionEstreeIndex → Expression.

Only JSDoc and casts change in lib/; no runtime change.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor

Did you add tests for your changes?

No new tests: the change is types only. test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js and JavascriptSyntaxTree.unittest.js now type their parser-plugin overrides with the new node types.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Use of AI

Written with Claude Code: it generated the ESTree-shaped typedefs from @types/estree, typed the parser in parallel passes and added the @internal rule to the types generator. I directed the design (types in code, ESTree names, public types unchanged) and reviewed it. yarn lint and the parser unit tests pass locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved handling of internal types during type generation, including their use in optional parameters and arrays.
    • Updated parser and syntax-printer type annotations for greater specificity.
    • Runtime behavior is unchanged.

Replace EXPECTED_ANY in lib/javascript/syntax-parser.js with node
typedefs declared in the parser itself, named and shaped as ESTree's.
startNode returns an UnfinishedNode whose fields keep their real types,
and finishNode returns the exact node. The typedefs are @internal: the
types generator writes them as any, so types.d.ts keeps main's public
signatures.

📝 Walkthrough

Type generation now detects internal aliases and type parameters and adjusts generated signatures and types accordingly. Parser implementation and test annotations now use more specific node types. The parser runtime logic is unchanged.

Changes: Generated Declaration Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recognize internal types
tooling/generate-types.js
New helpers detect internal aliases and constrained type parameters, identify qualifying written and resolved types, and widen literal constraints.
Apply internal-type rules to signatures
tooling/generate-types.js
Symbol lookup falls back to the checker when declarations are absent. Parameter and return parsing substitutes any for qualifying written types and filters internal type parameters.
Map internal types during type parsing
tooling/generate-types.js
Type parsing replaces internal type parameters with widened constraints and maps other qualifying internal types to any.

Parser Type Annotations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Narrow parser annotations
lib/javascript/regexp.js, lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/JavascriptSyntaxTree.unittest.js, test/unitCases/WebpackParser.unittest.js
Parser implementation and test JSDoc annotations use more specific parser node types. The regexp prototype assertion now includes the Parser type. Runtime parser behavior is unchanged.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Preserve arrays inside internal-type unions.

For a written type such as InternalA[] | InternalB[], isInternalTypeNode returns true, but checker.isArrayType(type) does not identify the union as an array. This branch emits any instead of preserving the array requirement. The return-type guard at Line 1254 has the same problem. Check the written union for array members before replacing the whole type. Generated code size

Comparing base (57c5e87) to head (7322fa8). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8843 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2243 test(s), 8843 asset(s), 100 emitted nothing.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 41 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
