events: do not call resume() from on() after the iterator closes - #42896
Conversation
The iterator from events.on() pauses the emitter above highWaterMark and resumes it when the queue drains. closeHandler left the paused flag set, so next() called emitter.resume() on an emitter that had already closed. node:readline builds its line iterator on events.on() with a highWaterMark of 1024, and Interface.resume() throws ERR_USE_AFTER_CLOSE after close(). A for await loop over an input that delivers 1,026 or more lines in one chunk and then ends threw that error and dropped the last line. Clear the paused flag in closeHandler, as Node.js does since nodejs/node#60548. Update test-readline-async-iterators.js to the v26.3.0 version, which has the upstream regression test.

WalkthroughThe async iterator cleanup now clears paused state, and buffered-event handling records that iteration cannot finish at the resume point. Regression tests cover EventEmitter and readline async iteration with large buffered inputs, including ChangesAsync iterator buffering
Priority: ⬇️ Low Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The added readline regression test can fail before testing the intended behavior, blocking the affected test workflow. Add the missing stream import before merge. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4✅ Passed checks (4 passed)

testReadableFrom uses it, so the Readable.from call resolves correctly and the
test reaches the readline async-iteration behavior.

A note on the CodeRabbit summary above. Its "missing stream import" finding is not valid, and CodeRabbit withdrew it in the review thread. |
Problem
for await (const line of rl)overnode:readlinethrowsERR_USE_AFTER_CLOSE(readline was closed) and drops the last line. It happens when one chunk delivers 1,026 or more lines and the input ends with that chunk (Readable.from([text]), an HTTP response). Bun 1.3.14 and Node.js v26.3.0 yield every line.closeHandlerinevents.on(src/js/node/events.ts:741). It leavespausedset when the interface closes. When the queue drains,next()callsrl.resume(), which throws on a closed interface.resume()throws afterclose(). Before that, it did nothing.Fix
closeHandlersetspaused = false. A finished iterator does not callemitter.resume(). It still yields every queued event.on()against v26.3.0 shows no other behavior difference.test/js/node/events/event-emitter.test.ts,test/js/node/readline/readline.node.test.ts, andtest/js/node/test/parallel/test-readline-async-iterators.js(now the v26.3.0 file, with the upstream regression test). All three fail without the fix. Background
events.on(emitter, event)returns an async iterator that queues events until the consumer callsnext().highWaterMark, the iterator callsemitter.pause()when the queue is longer than the mark. It callsemitter.resume()when the queue drains belowlowWaterMark.closeoption names events that finish the iterator.closeHandlerremoves the listeners and marks it finished. Queued events stay readable.readlinebuilds its line iterator withevents.on(rl, "line", { close: ["close"], highWaterMark: 1024 }). The first line resolves the pendingnext(), so line 1,026 is the first one that pauses the interface.Notes
Repro. It prints
threw ERR_USE_AFTER_CLOSE after 1025 of 1026 linesbefore the fix andok: 1026 of 1026 linesafter it:Event order, traced with listeners on the input and on the interface. Steps 1 to 3 are identical on Node.js v26.3.0 and Bun:
rl.pause()inside thedataevent.endone tick later, while it is paused.rl.close()runs and emitsclose. The consumer has read one line at this point.next()callsrl.resume()when the queue drains, andresume()throws.Inputs that fail on Bun 1.4.3 with 5,000 lines in one chunk:
Readable.from([text]), aPassThroughwithend(text), aReadablethat pushes the text and thennull,Readable.fromWeb(new Response(text).body), andhttp.IncomingMessage. These streams know about the end when they emit the chunk, soendfollows one tick later even if the stream is paused. All of them pass with the fix.Inputs that passed on Bun 1.4.3 in the first probes:
fs.createReadStream, piped stdin, and redirected stdin (5,000 and 200,000 lines, one run each), and child process stdout (5,000 lines). They usually find the end in a later read, and a paused stream does not start that read.Correction after the merge: pipes are not always safe. A pipe fails when its last chunk and its end arrive together. On the unfixed canary
c6b7fcb5b,for awaitoverspawn("seq", ["1", "100000"]).stdoutthrewERR_USE_AFTER_CLOSEafter 99,999 lines in 5 of 8 runs, and after 999,999 of 1,000,000 lines in 7 of 8 runs. With 5,000 lines, 8 of 8 runs passed. Pipedprocess.stdinwith 100,000 lines threw the same error in 1 of 10 runs. The fix does not depend on the input type: after the input ends and the interface closes,next()does not callrl.resume().A separate defect showed up in the same probes and is not part of this PR. Piped
process.stdinsometimes never emitsendafter apause()andresume()cycle (about 10% of runs on Bun 1.4.2 and canary, 0 of 40 on Bun 1.3.14, never on Node.js v26.3.0). It reproduces withoutreadline.Upstream report: nodejs/node#60507 ("readline regression since v24.2.0 on >= 1026 lines in input").
