Summary

The minify-corpora suite already holds webpack's minifier to terser's bytes and runs outputs that state what they print. swc's recorded output.js was only a report (JS_MINIFY_REPORT), never a check. Now each swc test's output under its own options must be no bigger than swc's (gzip decides, raw breaks a tie, as docs/performance.md weighs size), unless test/helpers/swcSmaller.js lists it under what swc does that webpack does not yet. A listed test that stops being bigger fails until retired, so the list only shrinks and a size regression is a failure.

The list groups all 422 current cases by transform, biggest first, as a work list:

Tests What swc does
57 inlines a function or IIFE into its call site
36 writes a variable's value at its one read
33 drops unused variables, destructuring, pure calls
27 evaluates built-ins on literals (toFixed, Object.keys, join, …)
24 same program, spelling that compresses better (; vs ,, operand order)
… 12 more groups
112 real-world bundles, the sum of the above
5 swc's output is wrong or relies on its drop_console reading — not targets

Example, fixture/issues/11102:

// webpack (gzip +66 bytes)
export const zoom=(range=>{const isUnder=accuracy=>range<=accuracy;return isUnder(0)||isUnder(50)||isUnder(100)?15:11})(75);
// swc
export const zoom=15;

JS_MINIFY_REPORT=<file> now tallies standing: worse 422, the same 354, better 125. The reader also maps swc's camelCase topLevel in mangle.json to terser's toplevel; it was dropped as unknown, which made one test look worse.

Builds on the idea of #22355 (swc's tests in the minifier suite), which main since covered in #22352.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

test

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js and test/helpers/swcSmaller.js. With an empty list the suite fails on all 423 cases; the topLevel fix made one listed test equal and the suite failed until it was retired. yarn test:minify-corpora passes, 232 tests in 336 s against 350 s on main.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No, only tests and docs change.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

docs/syntax.md and TESTING_DOCS.md describe the check and the list.

Use of AI

AI wrote the check, triaged each case where swc's output is smaller by comparing both outputs, and checked the five "swc is wrong" cases by running or reading them. The groups were reviewed against the diffs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests

    • Expanded JavaScript minifier corpus checks to compare compressed output sizes against recorded SWC results, using raw size to break ties.
    • Added documented exceptions for cases where webpack output is larger, and checks to ensure those exceptions remain applicable.
    • Improved comparison reports to group results as worse, equal, or better.
  • Documentation

    • Updated testing guidance to describe output validation, size comparisons, and exceptions.

Walkthrough

The corpus tests compare webpack output with SWC output using gzip size and raw size as a tie-breaker. They enforce documented exceptions and report worse, same, and better comparisons.

Changes

Minifier corpus comparisons

Layer / File(s) Summary
Load SWC rival outputs
test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js
The tests attach passing SWC port outputs to matching Terser cases when available. They normalize case names and options, and check the rival-output minimum only when the SWC checkout is present.
Compare corpus outputs
test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js
A fixture-to-reason lookup records documented SWC size exceptions. The corpus test compares gzip sizes and uses raw size to break ties. Worse results must be listed in SWC_SMALLER, and listed exceptions that are no longer worse fail.
Report comparison standings
test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, TESTING_DOCS.md, docs/syntax.md
The report tallies worse, same, and better results, with separate tables for worse and better cases. The documentation describes the comparison checks and report.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a3b1e

This change adds size comparisons to the minifier corpus tests and updates the documentation. It does not affect runtime behavior. The only open item is a small documentation clarification, so the change is ready to merge.

Generated code size

Comparing base (b049b72) to head (a3b1e1c). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8310 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2297 test(s), 8310 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

#### `swc/`

- **Purpose**: swc's repository, read only under `crates/swc_ecma_minifier/tests`: its fixtures with their configs, the tests `exec.rs` and `mangle.rs` write inline, and the libraries it measures itself on. Each is held to terser's bytes like the terser corpora; a test with an `expected.stdout`, and every `exec.rs` test, also has its outputs run, and each fixture's recorded `output.js` is what `JS_MINIFY_REPORT=<file>` compares sizes against.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

State that gzip size decides the comparison.

This entry says output may be “no bigger” but does not name the size metric. The check uses gzip size first and raw size only to break ties. Add that rule so maintainers can interpret the threshold and SWC_SMALLER exceptions correctly.

Suggested documentation
+ Size comparisons use gzip size first; raw size breaks ties.
