Summary

Folds js-minify-stdout into the byte-identical suite, renamed minify-corpora (yarn test:minify-corpora): every terser/swc/test262 source is held to terser's bytes, and wherever a test states what its input prints (all 1307 terser expect_stdout cases, swc's expected.stdout and exec.rs) the output is also run. That found 11 cases where terser, and so webpack's printer, writes a different program ({__proto__} shorthands and spreads, lost this on calls and template tags, arguments aliasing, dropped parameter defaults, a class moved out of reach, === between two calls); a new correct printer phase fixes them, hash-pinned to terser 5.51.2, and the suite accepts a byte difference only where switching that phase off gives terser's bytes back. JS_MINIFY_REPORT=<file> lists where swc's recorded output is smaller, as leads for printing less.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

test

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js (its CORRECTED table must print right with the phase and as terser without it), and test/unitCases/terserCorrections.unittest.js, one case per fix, each asserting terser misprints it.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No; the corrections apply only where webpack's printer minifies (printer: true, the futureDefaults path).

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI (Claude Code) merged the two suites, bisected each misprint to the terser option behind it, wrote the corrections and their tests; I directed the design and reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected JavaScript minification cases that could change runtime behavior. Minified output now better preserves prototype-related behavior, method this binding, argument and parameter handling, and effects such as thrown errors. This improves behavior consistency between original and minified code across affected cases.

…suite

Fold js-minify-stdout into js-minify: each source is held to terser's
bytes, and where its test states what the input prints (terser's
expect_stdout, swc's expected.stdout and exec.rs) the output is run too.
Terser misprints webpack inherits are listed with reasons, and
JS_MINIFY_REPORT lists where swc's recorded output is smaller.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_016Yz3eH1MRfYQJKa7x4wERK
Add a `correct` printer phase wrapping the terser methods that write a
wrong program: `__proto__` shorthands and spreads, lost `this` bindings
for calls and tags, `arguments` aliasing, dropped parameter defaults and
patterns, classes moved out of reach, and `===` between two calls.
The corpora suite now runs every terser stdout case, accepts a byte
difference only where the phase makes it, and lists what it fixes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The printer adds hash-gated corrections for Terser output. The minifier corpus suite now checks Terser and SWC output and runtime behavior. Test262 runs include production builds with Terser and the webpack printer.

Changes

Minifier corrections and validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hash-gated correction phase
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/helpers/printerPhases.js, .changeset/025-javascript-minifier-corrections.md
The printer checks Terser source hashes before installing the correct phase. The loaded phase data exposes whether corrections are enabled.
Printing and call-semantics corrections
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js
The correction wrappers adjust __proto__ output and object spreading, account for direct eval, and guard call and tagged-template rewrites.
Compressor edge-case corrections
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
The wrappers guard rewrites involving arguments, equality comparisons, class declarations, and effectful default parameters. Unit tests compare runtime results with corrections enabled and disabled.
Corpus parsing and runtime checks
test/specCases/js-minify-stdout.spectest.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js
The combined runner reads Terser and SWC cases, their options, and expected output. It executes applicable cases in a timed VM and checks phase selection and supported Node-version formats.
Corpus comparisons and test wiring
test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, package.json, .github/workflows/test.yml, AGENTS.md, TESTING_DOCS.md
The runner compares printed output and reference behavior, tracks inherited and corrected cases, and reports smaller SWC outputs. The command, workflow, and documentation use the combined corpus suite.
Test262 minifier runs and failure tracking
test/specCases/test262.spectest.js
Test262 runs development tests and production tests with Terser or the printer. A failure catalog records expected minified failures, and the suite flags cases that pass unexpectedly.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85f5d

The minifier corrections apply only when the Terser source hashes match and are covered by expanded tests. The only remaining open item is a small documentation inaccuracy about how many corpora the suite covers. The change can merge once someone who owns the docs is aware of it.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 85f5d

No security regression was established. The corrections are limited to the printer path and fall back to existing minification behavior when compatibility cannot be verified. A future dependency change could silently remove the fixes, and review of the expanded corpus-execution path remains incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The production effect is confined to builds selecting the JavaScript printer; their emitted programs can reflect the corrected semantics. No new tenant, credential, network, or service authority was identified in the inspected paths.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Installed-source hash matching controls whether Terser internals receive the corrections. A mismatch preserves the prior minification path rather than applying corrections to an unverified version.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A Terser change that invalidates the hashes can return builds to previously incorrect semantics without failing the build. This is a limitation of the new correction guarantee, not evidence that this PR worsens the prior fallback behavior.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make loss of correction-phase compatibility visible in build validation so dependency updates cannot silently remove the semantic fixes.

Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8279 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset that both runs emit changed size — everything below is new or deleted.

Production now builds each test262 case once per minimizer: terser as
published, and webpack's printer as futureDefaults switches it, in
process. What each still fails is listed by reason and must keep
failing; the terser mode goes once the printer replaces terser.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the minifier-corpus count.

The combined runner declares six corpus entries, not four. The sentence omits the three SWC entries while stating that test262 is the third.

Suggested fix
-- **Purpose**: terser's own repository, pinned to the version webpack depends on. Its `test/compress` cases and `test/input` files are two of the corpora `lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js` is held to (test262 is the third): each source is minified by terser as published and by webpack's printer under several option sets, and the outputs, or the errors, must be byte-for-byte the same, but for what webpack's `correct` phase fixes. A case stating its `expect_stdout` also has each output run in terser's sandbox, which must print it — or, for `expect_stdout: true`, do whatever its input does, a throw or silence included.
