Ex–Derek Daly 1983 March-Cosworth 83C

This 1983 March 83C wears chassis number 83C–15, and it was driven by Derek Daly for Wysard Racing to a 19th-place finish in the 1983 Indianapolis 500. It was later fitted with a #34 Agfa Photographic livery before it was purchased by its late owner approximately 20 years ago. Fiberglass carbon-fiber composite body panels are mounted over a honeycomb aluminum monocoque chassis with a molded composite upper section, and the car retains a turbocharged 2.65-liter Cosworth DFX V8 mated to a Hewland five-speed manual gearbox. Features include four-wheel disc brakes, 15″ BBS center-lock wheels, a plexiglass windscreen, road racing wings, a fixed aluminum seat with black padding, and a Personal steering wheel on a quick-release hub. This March 83C is now offered by the seller on behalf of the late owner’s estate in Napa, California, with spare parts, a Gerhardt starter, photos and literature from the 1983 Indianapolis 500, records, and a bill of sale.

The 83C was designed to compete in the 1983 IndyCar season, and 16 examples competed in that year’s Indianapolis 500, including the #5 Texaco Star car driven to victory by Tom Sneva. The 83Cs would win 7 out of the 13 races of the 1983 IndyCar season, as well as that year’s Constructor’s Championship.

This example wore a red, white, and blue #34 Wysard Racing livery during the 1983 Indianapolis 500 and was later outfitted with an Agfa Photographic livery. Equipment includes road racing wings, a plexiglass windscreen, dual side-view mirrors, and a roll hoop.

The 15″ BBS center-lock wheels feature gold basketweave centers, and they are mounted with Goodyear Eagle slicks. A set of four matching rims is included in the sale. The 83C features a 111″ wheelbase and a fully independent double-wishbone suspension with inboard rear coilovers. Stopping power is provided by disc brakes at all four corners.

The cockpit features an aluminum seat with black padding and a Willans harness. The car is equipped with a right-hand shifter, a brake bias adjustment knob, and a fire-suppression system.

The Personal steering wheel is mounted on a quick-release hub ahead of a 12,600-rpm tachometer and gauges for water temperature, oil temperature, and manifold pressure.

USAC decals are affixed to the side of the cockpit along with a CART decal that can be seen in the gallery.

The turbocharged 2.65-liter Cosworth DFX V8 features a mechanical fuel injection system, and the seller notes that it has been rebuilt. A Gerhardt starter is included in the sale and can be seen in the gallery.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Hewland five-speed manual gearbox.
