Summary

Fuzzing the minifier against its source turned up two miscompiles that came over from terser. Both are fixed in the corrections phase:

  • A switch folded on a constant dropped a case's let, const or class that a reached case reads in its dead zone, so a ReferenceError became undefined.
  • (x + "a") + 2 was regrouped as x + ("a" + 2) even when x was not a string, so additions turned into string joins and the other way round.

It also closes one rival gap, in the improvements phase. Where a module or toplevel keeps the top level private, a top-level const that nothing writes is now written as let. Exported declarations are left alone.

// input
try { switch (1) { case 0: let s = 1; console.log(s); case 1: console.log(typeof s); } } catch (e) { console.log(e.name); }
// before: logs undefined
try{console.log(typeof s)}catch(e){console.log(e.name)}
// after: logs ReferenceError, like the source
try{switch(1){case 0:let s=1;console.log(s);case 1:console.log(typeof s)}}catch(e){console.log(e.name)}

// input
var u; function f() { return "a"; } console.log("x" + true + 2, f() + "" + void 0 + 1);
// before: logs x3 aNaN
console.log("x3",f()+""+NaN);
// after: logs xtrue2 aundefined1, like the source
console.log("xtrue2",f()+""+void 0+1);

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js covers the corrected switch (let and class) and string-join cases, void x ?? y, and the top-level let.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a. It is covered by the existing .changeset/110-minifier-output-growth.md.

Use of AI

Claude Code wrote the fuzzers, reduced the failures, and wrote the fixes and tests. I reviewed the changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved minification of eligible private constants without changing exported declarations.
    • Preserved switch behavior when a case depends on a lexical binding from another case.
    • Kept string concatenation results and evaluation order correct in optimized expressions.
    • Improved optional-chain rewriting in boolean tests.
    • Expanded conditional-call merging for compatible ordinary and spread calls while preserving safe evaluation.

…d string joins as strings

- a constant `switch` keeps its branches where one case reads a `let`,
  `const` or class another declares, whose dead zone the fold dropped
- `(x + "s") + c` regroups its constants only where one is a string:
  terser folded `"s" + true + 2` to `"s3"`
- `void x ?? y` is written `(x, y)`

Where a module or `toplevel` keeps the top level from other code, a
`const` nothing writes is `let` there too; exported ones stay.

📝 Walkthrough

The syntax printer adds conditional-call and optional-chain rewrites, expands top-level const conversion, and adds guards for switch and string-concatenation optimizations. It also rewrites a void expression with nullish coalescing. Unit tests and minification comparison fixtures cover the changes.

Changes: Syntax printer optimizations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conditional-call and optional-chain rewrites
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
Conditional-call merging now handles eligible ordinary calls and spread calls. Optional-chain conversion also applies when && is read in boolean context. Unit tests cover these rewrites and call-preservation cases.
Top-level const conversion
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
Top-level const declarations can become let when the top level is private or top-level variables are enabled. Bindings named by exports and declarations held directly by exports remain excluded.
Optimizer correctness guards
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
With corrections enabled, switch optimization stops when a case reads a binding declared in another case. String reassociation checks whether regrouped operands remain string-producing. With improvements enabled, a void left operand of ?? evaluates before the right operand.
Minification comparison fixtures
test/helpers/oxcSmaller.js, test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js
Oxc and SWC fixture classifications change. The minification corpus records updated size comparisons.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. … && a.b` as `a?.b` for truth

Two calls differing in one argument merge where reading the callee first
cannot be seen by the test. The merged conditional is no longer optimized
in the context of the one it replaces, which read a value as a truth, and
a `const` exported by name stays `const`.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject mapped-arguments parameters before merging calls.

readsCalleeAside can accept t as an own local even when a non-strict function maps t to arguments[0]. A getter on x.m can then assign arguments[0] during the property lookup. The original t ? x.m(1) : x.m(2) reads t first, but the merged x.m(t ? 1 : 2) reads x.m first. The getter can therefore change which argument the conditional selects.

lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js:38268-38276
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Scan case labels before folding the switch.

For a binding without a tracked fixed value, case x: remains a syntax node. Folding keeps that branch, reaches a later constant match, and removes subsequent cases. If a removed case declares let x, the retained label can read an outer x instead of throwing the original TDZ ReferenceError.

🟡 Minor · Preserve same-case TDZ reads in constant switches. · syntax-printer.js:38200-38289

lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js:38200-38289
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve same-case TDZ reads in constant switches.

readsAnotherCaseBinding ignores a reference when its declaration is in the same case. For switch (1) { case x: let x = 2; }, x is fixed to 2, so switch folding removes the nonmatching case. The case test is then lost, although JavaScript must throw ReferenceError while evaluating x in its TDZ.

The existing readsBeforeDeclaration logic protects dropSideEffectFree, but it does not affect the ast.hasSideEffects check used here. Detect references in each case test independently of the case that declares them.

… and let `export default` names be `let`

`var a; a = b, c()` becomes `var a = b; c()`, moving the bare name last
where another declarator holds a value. A name `export default` reads
exports a value, so it may be `let` like any private one.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
Folding `var a; a = b` into `var a = b` broke the repeated `a = …` text that
gzip reads cheaply, so files assigning one name several times came out
smaller raw but bigger gzipped.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
… body

terser's loop guard keeps every call in a loop from inlining, which also kept
calls to an empty function that make no closure. A function with a parameter
default or pattern still runs, so its calls stay.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…rites

A settled `var` was read only where reduce_vars still marked it fixed, which
calling its value or a loop head undoes though nothing writes it again. A
parameter of a function reading `arguments` stays apart.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…tes again

A function written in place reads the variable passed for its parameter in
its place only when nothing wrote the variable. A write in the variable's own
function runs around the body, never in it, so only a closure's write, or one
seen by a closure the body makes, keeps the call.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…ead of it

terser stops a moved value at any read of a name it calls a method on, as the
call may change the object; a read of the bare name still yields the binding,
which only an assignment changes.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…its consequent

`a ? A : (s, b ? X : A)` writes A once as `a || (s, !b) ? A : X`, kept only
when the merged form is shorter.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…iables

`!function(y){if(1===y)throw Error()}(x)` writes its body in place, each
parameter read as the variable passed for it, where nothing writes that
variable. Copies of one helper stay, as they gzip as one repeat.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
A value calling a method on a name moved past a read of the name only where
an argument or array element collects the object: `o + ""` and a template
convert it first, so `var p = o.pop(); return o + "" + p` printed the
array before `pop` ran. Retire the cases now no bigger than the rivals'.

alexander-akait added a commit that referenced this pull request Oct 19, 2026
* build: precompile schemas with schema-utils

tooling/precompile-schemas.js now calls schema-utils' precompile with
minify instead of carrying its own ajv keywords, error stripping and
terser pass, so webpack's checks are built the same way as every
plugin's and loader's. The checks are minified with webpack's own
minifier, so the lint job links webpack like the test jobs do.

Drops the ajv and commondir devDependencies.

* build: keep types.d.ts as main generates it

The schema-utils imports moved only with a stale local node_modules; a
clean install generates the same types.d.ts as main.

* build: update schema-utils to 4.8.1

4.8.1 bundles without errors or warnings, which test/cases/large/big-assets
needs now that the tooling uses schema-utils precompile.

* build: regenerate schema checks with main's minifier

* fix(minify): preserve observable string conversions

* fix(minify): keep pattern targets and patched array iteration; split the minify CI leg

- `[[1][0]] = a` keeps its target: the flattened `[1] = a` does not parse
  (CodeRabbit on #22839)
- a `new Set` or a built-in given an array literal stays where the program
  patches `Array.prototype`, whose iterator may run code (CodeRabbit on
  #22837)
- the corpora and the fuzzer run as two CI legs, the corpora bounded at
  90 min: together they took 37 of the 60 min on a fast runner and passed
  the limit on a slower one

* fix(minify): keep what a patched Array.prototype runs, and conversions not pure

- a spread array literal stays, kept for its effects, and an array
  literal is no constant to a built-in, a `+` or a template, where the
  program patches `Array.prototype`
- `"a" + x` read for its truthiness keeps `x`'s conversion unless
  `pure_conversions`
- the parser job's checkout keeps no credentials, and the changeset fits
