Summary

This follows #22824. Each language's syntax tests now follow its modules:

  • tokenizer
  • parser
  • printer: the printer file holds both print modes, plus the language's minifier (cssMinify, htmlMinify, jsMinify, …). The minifier is a wrapper that drives the printer in its minify mode.
Folder Before After
css/ syntax (16,310 lines) tokenizer (9 blocks), parser (11), printer (68)
html/ syntax (12,604 lines) tokenizer (5), parser (17), printer (39)
javascript/ parser, webpack-parser, printer, minify tokenizer, parser, printer
xml/, json/ minify printer

Placement decisions:

  • SourceProcessor tests: SourceProcessor is the shared engine in lib/util/. A test goes to the language's parser when it walks the tree (path accessors, the skip set, the streamed walk). It goes to printer when it changes what gets written (minify transforms, renderEmbeddedSource, print modes).
  • javascript/tokenizer: gets the three tokenizer describe blocks that sat inside WebpackParser: token context, newline tracking, and cold paths. They keep WebpackParser as their outer name, so their full names don't change. The acorn-parity checks on Parser's entry points stay in parser.
  • JavascriptParser: javascript/webpack-parser goes back to the top level as JavascriptParser.unittest.js. JavascriptParser is webpack's layer over the syntax, the one plugins tap, so its tests sit with NormalModule's and the other classes'. javascript/ holds only the syntax.

How the files were split:

  • Each new file requires only what its tests use. Shared helpers are followed transitively.
  • Type comments are kept where the file names their types.
  • cspell:ignore words are kept where the file uses them.
  • Snapshot entries moved with the block that owns them.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

test (a refactor of the test layout)

Did you add tests for your changes?

No new tests. For CSS, HTML and JS, I ran the original files and the split ones side by side and compared every test's full name:

Language Tests (old = new) Names Unused snapshots
CSS 2,643 identical 0
HTML 1,168 identical 0
JS (parser + printer + minify) 2,309 identical 0
  • JavascriptParser.unittest.js: a path-only move. Its 277 tests pass.
  • Whole unit suite: 35,578 tests, the same as before. All pass except ProfilingPlugin, which needs a Chrome the local machine doesn't have.
  • Lint and types: yarn lint and lint:types-test are clean.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

TESTING_DOCS.md describes the layout.

Claude Code assigned the blocks, split the files with a scope-aware script, and checked the test names against the originals. I reviewed it.

Explanation

The pull request title 'test: split the syntax unit tests into tokenizer, parser and printer' follows the conventional-commit form type(scope): subject. The type is 'test', which is in the allowed list. The subject clearly describes the main change: reorganizing syntax unit tests by component across tokenizer, parser, and printer files. The title matches the file changes shown in the raw summary, where CSS, HTML, and JavaScript syntax test suites are split into separate tokenizer, parser, and printer test files.

Comparing base (8c3cbd3) to head (77e8879). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 9105 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2279 test(s), 9105 asset(s), 101 emitted nothing.

test/unitCases/html/tokenizer.unittest.js: 1

3091-3203: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Share one copy of the materialization helpers.

childrenOf, materialize, parseHtml, child, html and body are copies of the same helpers in parser.unittest.js (Lines 53-184). The Mat* typedefs at Lines 9-32 are copied too, and printer.unittest.js repeats childrenOf.

In this file, the only caller of the tree helpers is the NUL-in-CDATA assertion at Line 3744. That means about 110 lines of tree-construction scaffolding sit in the tokenizer suite. If the accessor surface (A.startOf, Part.content, and so on) changes, three copies must change together.

Extract the helpers into test/helpers/ next to serializeHtmlTree.js and import them from all three suites.

Each language's tests now follow its modules: a tokenizer, a parser and a
printer, whose file holds both print modes and the minifier that drives
the printer in its minify mode.

- css/, html/: syntax splits into tokenizer, parser and printer; the
SourceProcessor tests go to the parser when they walk the tree and to
the printer when they rewrite what it writes
- javascript/: the tokenizer blocks leave parser for tokenizer, minify
(jsMinify) joins printer, and webpack-parser becomes module-parser,
after `module.parser.javascript`, the layer it tests
- xml/, json/: minify becomes printer

Every test keeps its name and every snapshot its key; each new file
requires only what its tests use.

javascript/ holds the syntax: tokenizer, parser, scope and printer.
JavascriptParser is webpack's layer over it, the one plugins tap, so its
tests go back to the top level next to NormalModule's and the others.
The layout docs give tooling/ its own sentence.

Move the duplicated parse and plain helpers into test/helpers/.

This split copied parse (lines 30-55) and plain (lines 362-372) unchanged. The same code also exists in test/unitCases/javascript/parser.unittest.js, at lines 54-79 and 4203-4213. If the parser options or the token serialization change, someone must update both copies, or the two suites will test different things.

Move both helpers to a shared module, for example test/helpers/javascriptParse.js, and import that module from both suites.

As per coding guidelines: "a reusable assertion or fixture belongs in helpers/".

Move the XML printing suite into the XML printer file.

This block tests XML printing, not HTML parsing. It covers the beautify and minify output, the embedded renderer, _xmlCharacterData and the async renderer. It also writes snapshots. The layout rule puts XML printer tests in xml/ (printer). The PR objectives also say that the XML minify tests move into the printer files. In the current location, the XML minifier tests are split between the HTML parser suite and the XML printer suite.

Move this describe("printing") block and its snapshots to test/unitCases/xml/printer.unittest.js.

As per coding guidelines: "xml/ (printer) … A printer's file holds both of its modes and the language's minifier, which drives the printer in its minify mode."

…initializers (#22873)

* feat(minify): merge an early return's `if` with the last `if` it leaves

`if (a) return; if (b) return c` was written `if (!a) if (b) return c`, as the tail is rewritten after nested `if`s are merged. Neither may hold an `else`.

* feat(minify): drop what a loop's update runs without effects

`for (; a; i++, 0)` keeps only `i++`, and an update left with no effect goes, as terser already does for the init.

* feat(minify): give a `let` its value before a loop that assigns it first

`let i; for (i = 0; …)` as `let i = 0; for (; …)`. The `let` stays out of the loop head, where it would be a binding each time round, unseen after the loop.

* test(minify): cover the oxc peephole gaps with a real build

Drives early-return merging, a loop's dead update and a let lifted into
a loop head through webpack(), including the self-reading let/var
guards.

* test: snapshot the three new improve-phase cases

main's syntax unit test split (#22825) added a snapshot assertion to
every IMPROVED_CASES entry after this branch forked; write the three
new ones.

* fix: drop the written 4th element IMPROVED_CASES no longer takes

Main's test split (#22825) replaced the explicit expected-output
element with a snapshot; a 4-tuple entry breaks the array's declared
3-tuple type for every entry, not just its own.

* fix: keep a sibling declarator's dead-zone read out of a let merge

Hoisting a let-before-a-loop assignment into its declaration (added by
this branch) can fold a later declarator's read into an earlier one,
throwing where the un-hoisted statements ran fine. Reject a value that
reads any declarator at or after the one being filled, not just itself.
