Summary

Rewriting an asset's bytes and emitting it under a new name is possible only from a loader today. A plugin cannot do it, for two independent reasons:

  • Minification is async and processResult is synchronous. It is otherwise the right place — it sees what the loaders produced, before parse, while both the bytes and the name are still open.
  • By processAssets the URL is already written into the bundle. compilation.renameAsset moves the file and leaves every reference pointing at the old name, reporting no error. Measured: the file becomes pic.webp, the bundle still says "pic.png", errors: 0.

So processResult becomes an AsyncSeriesWaterfallHook. A tap written for the synchronous hook keeps working — tapable runs sync taps inline and calls back with no tick (before → callback → after), and 200k calls cost the same 3 ms either way — and an untapped hook is skipped entirely rather than paying a tick per module. webpack's three internal tappers (html, typescript, css) are unchanged.

Renaming needs a channel that outlives the build. matchResource says the right thing but belongs to resolution and is not serialized: a rename set while building is lost on a cache hit, and the restored module's sourceFilename then conflicts with the cached codegen (Can't handle conflicting asset info for sourceFilename, reproduced). buildInfo is written with the module, so this adds buildInfo.assetResource there.

The emitted name and the media type an inlined asset is written as now read the same resource, so an image re-encoded as another format cannot be emitted as pic.png or inlined as image/png while holding webp bytes — the inline half was wrong in my first draft and the second config case covers it.

This is what minimizer-webpack-plugin needs to minify and convert images without asking users to add a loader, and it is deliberately general: any plugin wanting to transform a module's source asynchronously can use it.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-rename (async tap re-encodes and renames; asserts the emitted name, the absence of the old one, and the content) and process-result-rename-inline (the same through asset/inline, asserting the data URI's media type follows). Both run under ConfigCacheTestCases too, which is the suite that catches the matchResource failure this avoids.

Verified on a sound environment: the whole asset-modules, typescript, html and css config-case selection passes (4126 tests, zero failures), and a with/without comparison over that selection showed no regressions — the only differing result was my own new case.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No behaviour change for existing taps: .tap() on the now-async hook runs inline and returns the same value, which is why the internal html/typescript/css taps and their suites are untouched. The declared type changes from SyncWaterfallHook to AsyncSeriesWaterfallHook, so a plugin that annotated the hook's type explicitly would need to update that annotation; .tap() call sites do not change.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Two things for the plugin API docs: that processResult accepts tapPromise/tapAsync from 5.110, and that a tap may set module.buildInfo.assetResource to change the name and media type an asset is emitted under. Both carry JSDoc here.

Use of AI

Claude Code was used to investigate and implement this. The alternatives were built and measured rather than argued: renaming at processAssets was reproduced producing a silent 404; renaming via matchResource was reproduced working cold and failing warm; the codegen-side two-pass (renderEmbeddedSource) was ruled out because the filename is resolved from getResource() during generation and module hashes are taken before it, so a rename found there is too late. The zero-cost claim for existing sync taps is measured, not assumed, and the inline media-type gap was caught by testing the feature rather than by reading it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Asset processing can asynchronously transform results and rename emitted assets.
    • Emitted filenames, inline media types, and transformed content remain aligned.
    • Image re-encoding and format conversion can be handled without a loader.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved consistency for renamed assets when using persistent caching.
    • Processing failures now surface as clear module build errors.
    • Loader and processing errors are preserved and reported reliably.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Changes

The change adds an asynchronous NormalModule result hook. Asset generation now uses buildInfo.assetResource for emitted names and inline MIME types. Tests cover WebP renaming for resource, inline, and data-URL assets, plus loader and hook failures.

Asset result renaming

Layer / File(s) Summary
Asynchronous process-result execution
lib/NormalModule.js
NormalModule exposes processResultAsync, applies transformed loader results when taps exist, and reports asynchronous and synchronous hook failures as module build errors.
Renamed asset resource generation
lib/asset/AssetGenerator.js, lib/asset/AssetModule.js
Asset filenames and MIME types use buildInfo.assetResource when present. The field is documented as persistent build information.
Asset rename configuration and validation
test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-rename/*, test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-rename-inline/*, test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-rename-data-url/*
Configuration cases asynchronously replace PNG bytes with WebP bytes and verify emitted filenames, file contents, data URLs, and MIME types.
Loader and hook error validation
test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-async-loader-error/*, test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-async-error/*, test/configCases/asset-modules/process-result-sync-throw/*
Configuration cases verify that loader failures, rejected processResultAsync taps, and throwing processResult taps produce module build errors.
Release documentation
.changeset/010-async-process-result-and-asset-rename.md
The changeset records the new asynchronous hook and tap-controlled asset renaming.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7dc08

The new processing path can skip interceptor-only processResult hooks when no direct taps are registered, so plugins that rely on those interceptors may not observe or transform module results as expected. The change is otherwise mergeable, but this compatibility risk needs explicit owner awareness or follow-up.

Inline comments:
In `@lib/NormalModule.js`:
- Line 1545: Update the processResultAsync completion callback in NormalModule
so exceptions thrown by the synchronous hooks.processResult.call(...) invocation
are caught and forwarded through processResult(err), preserving the module build
error path. Add an integration case covering a successful async tap followed by
a throwing synchronous tap.

Nitpick comments:
In `@lib/NormalModule.js`:
- Around line 1520-1523: Shorten the comment near the direct execution path to
at most two short lines, retaining only the non-obvious behavior that it calls
directly when unused and checks isUsed() so interceptor-only cases still invoke
call; remove stack-depth and other explanatory details.

An image minimizer needs to await its encoder and then emit the result
under a new name. processResult becomes an AsyncSeriesWaterfallHook so a
tap can await; existing tap() consumers are unaffected. buildInfo gains
assetResource, which unlike matchResource is serialized, so a rename set
while building survives the persistent cache.

Covered by configCases (resource, inline, data-url, loader error, a
rejecting tap and a throwing one), a watchCase asserting the rename holds
when the image is not rebuilt, and a hotCase across an update.

##### Minor Changes

- Wrap concatenated modules in lazy `__webpack_require__.cw` accessors and inline `require()`, keeping a wrapped body's names and side effects intact. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;21519](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21519))

- Add performance hints reporting what a build costs: duplicate packages and modules, circular dependencies, broad contexts, large modules and chunks, hotspots, `eval`, missing PURE annotations, polyfills, redundant dynamic imports, OS-dependent rules, cache effectiveness, how chunks load, what splitting refused, why an optimization was skipped, and rules, defines, externals, aliases and barrel reexports nothing uses. An oversized asset names its largest modules, and an entrypoint carrying the runtime recommends `optimization.runtimeChunk`. Enable every check not set individually with `performance.all`, report hints in stats only with `performance.hints: "stats"`, and get them in a stable order that leaves the build hashes unchanged. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Add the `descriptionRelativePath` module rule condition. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21705](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21705))

- Allow marking externals as side-effect-free with a `sideEffects` flag. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21712](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21712))

- Give externals the original request of a context module element. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21780](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21780))

- Resolve `@custom-media` values that are `true` / `false` or name another custom media. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Add the `__webpack_css_server_styles__` module variable to read the CSS collected while rendering without a DOM, and keep that CSS in the order the styles were applied. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21576](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21576))

- Patch the HTML `<head>` in place on hot update instead of forcing a full reload, including when a `<script>` that never executed is removed. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Scope counter names in CSS modules; fix the `counter()` counter-style and `animation` timeline keywords. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21600](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21600))

- Tree shake CommonJS: `module.exports` object literals, exports destructured from a `require()` binding, unused method requires, and unused side-effect-free `require()` calls and reexports. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Resolve relative entry `baseUri` values and bake one side of a hash cycle. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21750](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21750))

- Minify CSS further, only where the document is unchanged: shorthands and box longhands, `font-weight`, `<position>` and `font-stretch` keywords, colors (polar, Lab and `hsl()` converted to hex), numbers, times, zero units, `calc()` and every math function the spec names folded over constants, selector lists, An+B, keyframe selectors, media-feature ranges, `unicode-range`, `transition` layers, `display`, transforms, gradients, font families, identical repeated declarations, and rules an identical later one makes dead. Abilities are read off the target browsers, `vendorPrefixes` adds and drops vendor prefixes for them, and `rewriteCustomProperties` shortens custom property values. Minification never changes whether a declaration parses, and beautifying keeps every rule. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Safely minify CSS (with source maps) and HTML assets when `optimization.minimize` is enabled, unless a minimizer is already configured for them, making only transformations an engine cannot tell apart. Every rewrite is named as an option, so it can be switched off. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Minify HTML further where the parsed document is unchanged: drop redundant quotes, whitespace nothing renders, escapes text does not need, implied tags, optional end tags nothing prints behind, empty attributes and nested empty elements; fold enumerated values and casing; normalize each attribute against the element it is on; and rewrite `style`, token lists, `srcset`, `sizes`, URL, integer and boolean attributes, viewport `content`, inline `<style>` and a JSON `<script>` body through their own grammars. Adds the `optimization.minimize.html` options `collapseWhitespace`, `mergeStyles`, `minifyConditionalComments`, `minifySrcdoc`, `preserveComments`, `removeEmptyAttributes`, `removeEmptyElements`, `removeImpliedTags`, `removeRedundantAttributes`, `sortAttributes` and `sortTokenLists`, and keeps an end tag the parent, the next element or the adoption agency would otherwise restructure the tree over. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Suggest the closest name or a casing fix anywhere in a failed request. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21727](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21727))

- Add aggregated `shutdown` hook to `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;21578](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21578))

- Report which compilers changed on the MultiCompiler `done` hook. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;21580](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21580))

- Configure or exclude each asset type's minifier via `optimization.minimize`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21663](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21663))

- Speed up builds and cut memory: faster CSS, HTML and JavaScript parsing and minification, a built-in scope analyzer replacing `eslint-scope`, faster dependency hot paths, module diagnostics, CommonJS export scanning and concatenated module renaming, runtime modules, parsers, generators and dependencies loaded only when used, one file watcher pool shared between MultiCompiler children, and lower parser, graph and startup memory. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Improve tree-shaking for a namespace reexported as default, and fix `import d from "./mod"; d.member` reading `undefined` in that case. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Warn on cross-kind CSS module export conflicts and let the class win. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21538](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21538))

##### Patch Changes

- Fix broken HMR with `output.module` and non-`import` chunk loading by emitting a plain-JSON hot-update manifest. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21460](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21460))

- Fix unused CSS module exports leaking into the JS wrapper. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21301](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21301))

- Fix deferred import evaluation: re-throw cached errors, guard forcing a still-evaluating module, keep re-exported deferred namespaces identical, and evaluate initial-chunk deferred context imports lazily. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21446](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21446))

- Keep ESM live bindings for a module library's entry exports, including when the runtime is emitted as a separate chunk. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21349](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21349))

- Fix SplitChunks merging undersized modules into the wrong result group. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21356](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21356))

- Fix named id assignment reusing an already-used numbered suffix, which could produce duplicate module/chunk ids. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))

- Fix inlined non-binary asset modules with `encoding: false` emitting "undefined" instead of their content. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))

- Decode non-base64 data URIs as UTF-8 so multi-byte characters are preserved. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21366](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21366))

- Keep required JSON data intact when a prototype method (e.g. `arr.includes()`) is called on it. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21433](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21433))

- Recognize modern RegExp flags (`d`, `s`, `u`, `v`) when statically evaluating `new RegExp(...)`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21366](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21366))

- Merge object-form and dotted DefinePlugin definitions so `import.meta.env`/`process.env` are consistent across direct, whole-object and destructured access. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21419](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21419))

- Emit an error when an object external has no entry for the used externals type. (by [@&…
