What kind of change does this PR introduce?

Bug fix for the experimental HTML support (experiments.html).

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — two configCases/html cases: html-entry-no-js-asset (no JS asset is emitted for an .html entry) and html-entry-library-js-asset (the JS asset is kept when output.library asks for it).

Summary

An .html file used as an entry emits a JS chunk that nothing loads:

// webpack.config.js
export default {
  entry: "./src/index.html",
  experiments: { html: true },
};
asset main.js 341 bytes [emitted] [minimized] (name: main)
asset index.html 147 bytes [emitted] [minimized] (auxiliary name: main)

main.js is a bootstrap around a single module whose body is module.exports = "<!doctype html>…" — a copy of the page that was just written out. The emitted page references the <script src> entries the parser split out of it (__html_<hash>_0.js), never the entry chunk, so the file is dead weight, and there is one per page: a page with no <script> at all still gets one (336 B against a 141 B page), and each linked type: "html" page gets its own.

It also takes the entrypoint's primary asset slot, which is what stats and manifest/SSR tooling read:

Entrypoint main 341 bytes (147 bytes) = main.js 1 auxiliary asset

The dead JS is the asset; the page is auxiliary.

Fix

HtmlModulesPlugin already deletes exactly this file for the wrapper entry output.html adds — "A wrapper entry's chunk only rebuilds the page's own markup; the page loads the <script src> entries the parser split out of it". The wrapper test is HTML_DATA_URL_RE.test(resource), so a real .html file entry never reaches it. This widens that pass to a page extracted from an .html entry, keeping the existing safety net (a candidate another asset still references by URL is kept) and two behaviours unchanged:

  • a data URL still counts as a wrapper only for the data:text/html webpack writes itself, so a data:text/htmlx entry keeps its chunk (covered by output-html-data-url-media-type);
  • an entry asked for by name through output.library keeps its JS — there the bundle is the output the user configured, even when the module behind it is a page.

For comparison, a CSS entry has never emitted a JS asset: CssGenerator.getTypes() exposes the JavaScript type only when a JS module imports the stylesheet, while HtmlGenerator.getTypes() has no HTML-only path (_shouldExposeHtmlType(module) ? JAVASCRIPT_AND_HTML_TYPES : JAVASCRIPT_TYPES). Fixing it there instead would be the deeper change — happy to go that way if you prefer it; this patch stays inside the cleanup pass that already exists for the same reason.

Verification

Against this branch, entry: "./src/index.html" now emits index.html + the page's script chunk and nothing else, output.html output is unchanged, and an output.library build keeps main.js.

Test suites run locally on Node 22: ConfigTestCases 11755 passed, ConfigCacheTestCases -t html 3210 passed, StatsTestCases 145 passed (144 snapshots), HotTestCases* 1629 passed. eslint, prettier --check and tsc are clean on the changed file.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved HTML entry asset naming for generated JavaScript and stylesheet files.
    • Preserved JavaScript assets when HTML entries are exposed as libraries.
    • Updated resource hints to reference the correct emitted entry files.
    • Prevented page-only HTML entries from emitting unnecessary JavaScript.
    • Corrected HTML media type detection to avoid misclassifying similar MIME types.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for HTML entries with JavaScript, CSS, library assets, and resource hints.

An `.html` file used as an entry emitted a JS chunk holding the page as a
string export. Nothing loads it: the emitted page references the
`<script src>` entries the parser split out of it, never the entry chunk.
The file was dead weight that duplicated the page's markup, one per page,
and it took the entrypoint's primary asset slot in stats and the manifest
while the page itself was listed as auxiliary.

The cleanup pass that already removes the chunk of an `output.html` wrapper
entry now also covers a page extracted from a real `.html` entry — the same
reasoning, and the same guard: a file another asset still references by URL
is kept. A data URL keeps its current meaning, counting as a wrapper only
for the `data:text/html` webpack writes itself, and an entry asked for by
name through `output.library` keeps its JS.

For comparison, a CSS entry has never emitted a JS asset: CssGenerator
exposes the JavaScript type only when a JS module imports the stylesheet.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

HTML entry processing now distinguishes page-only modules, assigns page-based filenames to extracted JavaScript and CSS assets, preserves page JavaScript in resource hints, and matches the HTML media type exactly. Tests cover page-only, CSS-only, library-backed, and JavaScript-backed HTML entries.

Changes

HTML entry asset naming

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify page-only HTML modules
lib/html/HtmlGenerator.js, lib/html/HtmlModulesPlugin.js
HtmlGenerator receives a page-only predicate. Page-only modules produce HTML types without JavaScript types. Incoming connections remain relevant unless extraction is disabled.
Assign page-derived asset filenames
lib/html/HtmlModulesPlugin.js
Standalone page entries receive page-based JavaScript and CSS filename templates. Extracted entries use those templates, with fallback filenames for other entries. The previous wrapper and extracted-page cleanup scan was removed.
Resolve page resource hints and media types
lib/dependencies/HtmlEntryDependency.js, lib/config/defaults.js, test/Defaults.unittest.js, test/configCases/html/output-html-data-url-media-type/*
Resource hints resolve page chunks to preserved and extracted entry chunks. The default HTML rule matches only the exact case-insensitive text/html media type.
Validate HTML entry outputs
test/configCases/html/*
Tests cover page-only entries, CSS-only entries, library-backed HTML entries, HTML entries with JavaScript, resource hints, script injection, per-entry options, and stable output filenames.
Record the webpack patch release
.changeset/181-html-entry-js-asset.md
The changeset records a patch release for the HTML entry asset behavior.

Note on the red codecov/patch and codecov/project checks — they are measuring an incomplete upload set, not a coverage regression in this diff.

Both posted seconds after the unit job uploaded, while the flags that cover this code had uploaded nothing. Codecov says so itself: "HEAD has 25 uploads less than BASE" (integration 20, test262 2, css-parsing, html5lib, syntax-equivalence), and the only flag with data reads unit | 60.48% <76.47%> (-0.01%).

The unit flag is yarn cover:unit, i.e. test/*.unittest.js. The asset-cleanup pass this PR touches is exercised by ConfigTestCases, which uploads under the integration flag — and that job is needs: basic, so it has not started yet. Until it uploads, patch coverage for this diff is measured against a suite that by construction never reaches the changed lines.

Measured locally against the added lines: instrumenting lib/html/HtmlModulesPlugin.js while running the html config cases covers all 32 added lines, with no partially covered branch (both operands of the output.library guard included). A re-run would not change anything here; the numbers should settle once the integration matrix finishes and uploads.

Gzip change decides — it is what a user downloads, and a re-encoding can cut raw bytes while costing wire bytes. Raw change is the tiebreak: it is what the generator wrote, so it is what has to be decompressed and parsed. Both are over assets both runs emit; bytes an added or deleted case brings with it are counted apart, under new/gone. Brotli and zstd are per asset in the table below.

On the CodSpeed report: the two regressed memory benchmarks cannot be reached by this change.

Both are pure-JavaScript fixtures with no HTML anywhere: test/benchmarkCases/common-libs is entry: "./index", test/benchmarkCases/future-defaults is entry: "./index" plus futureDefaults, and neither directory contains a .html file or sets output.html. The only code this PR touches is the deletion pass in HtmlModulesPlugin, which differs from main solely when an entrypoint's entry module is an HtmlModule whose page is extracted. With no HTML module in the graph, the pass behaves bit-identically to main — the added instanceof HtmlModule test short-circuits on a JavaScript entry module, and nothing new is allocated or retained.

The report itself flags the comparison: "Different runtime environments detected — Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments, which may affect the accuracy of the results." The third data point fits that too: an unrelated production benchmark (asset-modules-source) moved 8.4 MB → 6.4 MB in the opposite direction, which no part of this diff can explain either.

The repo's own benchmark-memory jobs are green on this head, and the CodSpeed check is neutral, not failing. Happy to re-run it against a fresh baseline if a maintainer would rather see the numbers settle.

An HTML page emits no JavaScript of its own, so the page's chunk no
longer occupies the entry's filename and the scripts and stylesheets
extracted from it take it instead: an `output.html` entry emits
`main.js` again, not `__html_<hash>_0.chunk.js`.

Comment thread lib/dependencies/HtmlEntryDependency.js Outdated
A string rule condition matches by prefix, so `data:text/htmlx,` was
read as a page rather than as JavaScript. Covers a CSS entry under
`output.html` and a page with nothing to bundle, which now emit their
page and its stylesheet and nothing else.
@github-actions github-actions Bot added the area: config Options, defaults, validation (lib/config, schemas/) label Sep 7, 2026
A hint naming a page expanded to the entries extracted from it and
dropped the page's chunk, so an `output.library` page lost its own
asset from the hint. `chunkHasJs` cannot decide this — it holds for
any runtime chunk, including a page that emits no JavaScript.
A page imported from JavaScript keeps its JavaScript side, so the build
error still surfaces as a throw at the import site — the only path that
reaches it now that a page-only entry emits no JavaScript.
`String.prototype.matchAll` is newer than Node 10, which the harness
runs the emitted bundle on, so the resource-hint assertion walked the
matches with a method that does not exist there.
alexander-akait added a commit to webpack/webpack.js.org that referenced this pull request Sep 7, 2026
webpack/webpack#22008 gives a page's extracted scripts the entry's
filename now that the page emits no JavaScript of its own, so the guides
stop showing generated identifiers. output-management and development list
main.bundle.js and main1.bundle.js for the two scripts the page pulls in,
the PWA listing follows in the same format, and caching is back to
main.<contenthash>.js beside runtime and vendors — its note about generated
chunk names is gone and the prose names the main bundle again.

Every listing was regenerated against that branch (84c1155): a page with
two scripts emits main.bundle.js and main1.bundle.js, and the caching setup
emits main.<hash>.js, vendors.<hash>.js and runtime.<hash>.js.

…ntry

A page reached by `import "./page.html"` or by a linked `type: "html"`
tag had no entry name to take, so its extracted chunks kept the synthetic
`__html_<hash>_N` name. Name them after the page's own file instead, the
way Vite and Parcel do, and fall back to the synthetic name when that
name is already taken.
A hint naming an HTML entry whose page extracted nothing resolved to that
page's own chunk, which no longer emits a JavaScript file — the rendered
`<link>` pointed at a missing asset. Cover the entry-with-includes guard
too, and drop the dead entry bookkeeping next to it.

…d the CSS loaders (#8355)

* docs: drop html-webpack-plugin from the guides and reference

The guide series taught HtmlWebpackPlugin and each page carried a note
explaining why it had not moved to the built-in HTML support yet. Webpack
builds pages itself, so the guides now use it and the plugin is no longer
named anywhere outside the migration guide.

output-management makes src/index.html the entry point: the page lists the
scripts it needs, webpack rewrites their URLs to the emitted bundles, and
there is no second list of entry points to keep in sync. development, HMR
and PWA follow that config through, and caching uses output.html since it
keeps a single JavaScript entry. Every build listing in those guides was
regenerated against webpack 5.110.3.

Scripts a page references become chunks of that page, so their names are
generated (__html_<hash>_<n>) rather than taken from entry. That is what
the listings show now, with a note in output-management and caching saying
where the names come from.

/plugins/html-webpack-plugin is removed and redirects to the Native HTML
guide, which documents the plugin's options and their built-in equivalents.
The plugins index links there instead of to the deleted page.

* docs: build the front page example with native HTML and CSS

The splash example bundled one JavaScript file and asked the reader to
write the page by hand, pointing a <script> tag at dist/bundle.js. Webpack
handles all three now, so the example starts from src/index.html: the page
links a stylesheet and a script, entry points at the page, and the emitted
document is shown next to the config with its URLs rewritten to the hashed
assets. Verified against webpack 5.110.3 — an HTML entry turns on the html
and css support on its own, and htmlFilename keeps the page's name out of
the contenthash pattern.

The migration guide's companion-plugin table now covers the popular
html-webpack-plugin ecosystem rather than five entries, and a new section
maps its six hooks onto HtmlModulesPlugin's, with a plugin rewritten
through transformTags and injectTags as the worked example.

* docs: drop css-loader, style-loader and MiniCssExtractPlugin from the docs

Webpack handles CSS itself, so the three packages are no longer named
outside the migration guide, and their pages are gone: css-loader and
style-loader join the excluded loaders, MiniCssExtractPlugin the excluded
plugins, and /loaders/css-loader, /loaders/style-loader and
/plugins/mini-css-extract-plugin redirect to the Native CSS guide. The
exclusion entries carry the webpack/ prefix the repositories actually
have; the older webpack-contrib/ spellings around them no longer match
anything the fetcher lists.

The HMR guide stops installing style-loader and css-loader for its
stylesheet section: experiments.css defaults to 'auto', so importing a
stylesheet needs no rule at all — webpack bundles it and links it into the
page, verified against webpack 5.110.3. The remaining mentions were
reference asides (a filter option, an ident-hash comment, an exports
convention, the CSS extraction bullet) and now describe the behavior
without naming a package, linking the guide where a reader needs more.

Left alone: the Native CSS migration guide, which has to name what it
migrates from, and the release posts and the v1-to-v2 migration guide,
where the loaders are part of the record.

* docs: name a page's bundles after its entry in the build listings

webpack/webpack#22008 gives a page's extracted scripts the entry's
filename now that the page emits no JavaScript of its own, so the guides
stop showing generated identifiers. output-management and development list
main.bundle.js and main1.bundle.js for the two scripts the page pulls in,
the PWA listing follows in the same format, and caching is back to
main.<contenthash>.js beside runtime and vendors — its note about generated
chunk names is gone and the prose names the main bundle again.

Every listing was regenerated against that branch (84c1155): a page with
two scripts emits main.bundle.js and main1.bundle.js, and the caching setup
emits main.<hash>.js, vendors.<hash>.js and runtime.<hash>.js.

* test: use postcss-loader as the package the site has a page for

The two owner-rename tests used css-loader as their example, and this
branch stops building a css-loader page, so the "has a page" assertion
no longer holds. postcss-loader is the same shape — a webpack-owned
loader the site still builds a page for — and keeps both tests testing
what they were written for.

* docs(config): document the validate option

diagnostics-webpack-plugin's README links to
/configuration/other-options/#validate, and the anchor did not exist:
webpack has had a top-level `validate` option since 5.106.0, and this
page never covered it. That dead fragment fails the link check on any
build, this branch included.

##### Minor Changes

- Wrap concatenated modules in lazy `__webpack_require__.cw` accessors and inline `require()`, keeping a wrapped body's names and side effects intact. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;21519](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21519))

- Add performance hints reporting what a build costs: duplicate packages and modules, circular dependencies, broad contexts, large modules and chunks, hotspots, `eval`, missing PURE annotations, polyfills, redundant dynamic imports, OS-dependent rules, cache effectiveness, how chunks load, what splitting refused, why an optimization was skipped, and rules, defines, externals, aliases and barrel reexports nothing uses. An oversized asset names its largest modules, and an entrypoint carrying the runtime recommends `optimization.runtimeChunk`. Enable every check not set individually with `performance.all`, report hints in stats only with `performance.hints: "stats"`, and get them in a stable order that leaves the build hashes unchanged. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Add the `descriptionRelativePath` module rule condition. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21705](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21705))

- Add OS-independent `glob` matching to module rules. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21771](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21771))

- Report inner-graph, AMD and bare `module` bailouts in `optimizationBailout`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21740](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21740))

- Allow marking externals as side-effect-free with a `sideEffects` flag. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21712](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21712))

- Give externals the original request of a context module element. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21780](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21780))

- Add the `externalsPresets.nodeModules` preset with an `allowlist` option to externalize installed packages, replacing the `webpack-node-externals` plugin. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21569](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21569))

- Add `output.library.umdAmdContainer` for an AMD-style loader branch in UMD. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;21770](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21770))

- Resolve `@custom-media` values that are `true` / `false` or name another custom media. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Add the `__webpack_css_server_styles__` module variable to read the CSS collected while rendering without a DOM, and keep that CSS in the order the styles were applied. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21576](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21576))

- Patch the HTML `<head>` in place on hot update instead of forcing a full reload, including when a `<script>` that never executed is removed. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Scope counter names in CSS modules; fix the `counter()` counter-style and `animation` timeline keywords. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21600](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21600))

- Tree shake CommonJS: `module.exports` object literals, exports destructured from a `require()` binding, unused method requires, and unused side-effect-free `require()` calls and reexports. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Resolve relative entry `baseUri` values and bake one side of a hash cycle. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21750](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21750))

- Minify CSS further, only where the document is unchanged: shorthands and box longhands, `font-weight`, `<position>` and `font-stretch` keywords, colors (polar, Lab and `hsl()` converted to hex), numbers, times, zero units, `calc()` and every math function the spec names folded over constants, selector lists, An+B, keyframe selectors, media-feature ranges, `unicode-range`, `transition` layers, `display`, transforms, gradients, font families, identical repeated declarations, and rules an identical later one makes dead. Abilities are read off the target browsers, `vendorPrefixes` adds and drops vendor prefixes for them, and `rewriteCustomProperties` shortens custom property values. Minification never changes whether a declaration parses, and beautifying keeps every rule. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Safely minify CSS (with source maps) and HTML assets when `optimization.minimize` is enabled, unless a minimizer is already configured for them, making only transformations an engine cannot tell apart. Every rewrite is named as an option, so it can be switched off. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Minify HTML further where the parsed document is unchanged: drop redundant quotes, whitespace nothing renders, escapes text does not need, implied tags, optional end tags nothing prints behind, empty attributes and nested empty elements; fold enumerated values and casing; normalize each attribute against the element it is on; and rewrite `style`, token lists, `srcset`, `sizes`, URL, integer and boolean attributes, viewport `content`, inline `<style>` and a JSON `<script>` body through their own grammars. Adds the `optimization.minimize.html` options `collapseWhitespace`, `mergeStyles`, `minifyConditionalComments`, `minifySrcdoc`, `preserveComments`, `removeEmptyAttributes`, `removeEmptyElements`, `removeImpliedTags`, `removeRedundantAttributes`, `sortAttributes` and `sortTokenLists`, and keeps an end tag the parent, the next element or the adoption agency would otherwise restructure the tree over. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Suggest the closest name or a casing fix anywhere in a failed request. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21727](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21727))

- Add aggregated `shutdown` hook to `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;21578](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21578))

- Report which compilers changed on the MultiCompiler `done` hook. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;21580](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21580))

- Add `[containedpath]`/`[containedfile]` placeholders, used for `[path]`/`[file]` of asset and html modules with `experiments.futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21592](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21592))

- Support an object for an entry's `html` that overrides `output.html` per option. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21574](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21574))

- Configure or exclude each asset type's minifier via `optimization.minimize`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21663](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21663))

- Support printing CSS and HTML beautified as well as minified. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21660](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21660))

- Add `renderEmbeddedSource`, and minify what it offers out of the box. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21830](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21830))

- Report bindings named `eval`, `arguments` or reserved words in ES module output. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21567](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21567))

- Emit no development source map for module libraries, or any with futureDefaults. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21839](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21839))

- Speed up builds and cut memory: faster CSS, HTML and JavaScript parsing and minification, a built-in scope analyzer replacing `eslint-scope`, faster dependency hot paths, module diagnostics, CommonJS export scanning and concatenated module renaming, runtime modules, parsers, generators and dependencies loaded only when used, one file watcher pool shared between MultiCompiler children, and lower parser, graph and startup memory. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Improve tree-shaking for a namespace reexported as default, and fix `import d from "./mod"; d.member` reading `undefined` in that case. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Warn on cross-kind CSS module export conflicts and let the class win. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21538](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21538))

- Add `output.resourceHints.dedupe` to skip prefetch links for already preloaded/prefetched chunks. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21386](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21386))

##### Patch Changes

- Let a memory-cache etag mismatch fall through to the file cache instead of reporting a miss. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Determine provided exports in dependency order, so a build's module hashes no longer depend on what the persistent cache held. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21630](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21630))

- Follow the HTML spec more closely when parsing and printing: frameset content, quirks paragraphs and selects, `<![CDATA[` outside foreign content as a bogus comment, `<?target data?>` as a processing instruction, `</>` dropped, comment data and DOCTYPE identifiers read from the tokenizer states, attributes merged from a repeated `<html>`/`<body>` tag, legacy JavaScript script types, void `keygen` and font format detection — and hand back the tree a parsed document was built from when printing it. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Clear a `Watching`'s `blocked` flag when its build starts, so it reports only a child actually waiting for its MultiCompiler parent. (by [@&#8203;bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#&#8203;21639](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21639))

- Generate every CSS and HTML lookup table into `lib/{css,html}/data.js` from `mdn-data`, `color-name` and the spec IDL — including the value-type facts read out of the CSS value-definition grammars — leaving both `syntax.js` files algorithm only. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Emit less runtime code: shorter syntax where `output.environment` allows, no IIFE for a `RuntimeModule` without locals, no unread `__webpack_esm_id__` and `exports.id` chunk exports, and an ESM entry chunk installing its own modules from its local bindings instead of importing itself.
