Summary

Three correctness bugs around the entry module id and the synthesized import.meta, plus one scope-hoisting improvement that falls out of the last one:

  • Under output.module, import.meta was assigned onto the single object the whole bundle shares, so every module referencing the whole object read the url of whichever module initialized last, and the objects compared equal across modules (test262 expressions/import.meta/distinct-for-each-module.js, now un-skipped). Each module now inherits from the bundle's object and owns the known properties, so unknown host properties stay observable while the url and identity are per module.
  • Re-bundling webpack's own output threw TypeError: Object prototype may only be an Object or null: undefined, because the synthesized binding always took the same name and the earlier declaration shadowed the new one. The name now steps aside only when the module source already spells it, so a first pass emits byte-identical output.
  • With optimization.runtimeChunk, require.main was undefined and import.meta.main false in the entry module, on every target. The entry startup assigns __webpack_require__.s only when the chunk asks for that global, but a split runtime chunk carries the tree runtime requirements for the whole entry, so the entry chunk reported none. The lookup now resolves the entrypoint's runtime chunk, which is the chunk itself when the runtime is not split.
  • import.meta.main excluded its module from concatenation outright. An inner concatenated module is never an entry module — ModuleConcatenationPlugin already rules entry modules out as inner ones — so it answers false statically, and only the concatenation root is now ruled out. Bun's bundler makes the same choice; esbuild, rollup and rolldown leave import.meta.main alone and so report true for an inlined module.

The AGENTS.md diff is unrelated to the fixes: it records that the Node baseline also constrains what a configCases/ fixture may use, since the harness executes the emitted bundle.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/module/import-meta-distinct, test/configCases/parsing/import-meta-main-concatenation, test/configCases/parsing/import-meta-main-entry, test/configCases/parsing/entry-module-id-runtime-chunk (node, web, webworker and the universal neutral platform), and test/ImportMetaRoundTrip.unittest.js; each was confirmed to fail without its fix. The test262 skip for expressions/import.meta/distinct-for-each-module.js is removed.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No, though one behaviour changes deliberately: writes made through the whole import.meta object are no longer visible to other modules, which is what the spec requires. Writes through import.meta.x = … remain observable.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI (Claude Code) was used to investigate the failures, write the fixes and tests, and run the verification. Every change was reproduced before and after by hand: the bundlers were compared against native import.meta.main in Bun, the emitted output was diffed for byte-identity where no change was intended, and each new test was confirmed to fail on the unfixed code. All output was reviewed by the author before committing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed handling of import.meta so each module retains distinct, stable metadata and the correct URL.
    • Fixed import.meta.main for entry modules, non-entry modules, and scope-hoisted builds.
    • Fixed require.main detection when using split runtime chunks.
    • Improved compatibility when bundling and re-bundling ES modules.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified Node.js syntax requirements and test configuration guidance.

`await-using-not-allowed-at-top-level-of-script.js` passes in both modes
and both scenarios, so the entry only hid a case that already holds.

The other two entries described the wrong cause. `yield` is parsed as an
identifier because the "strict" scenario prepends the directive to the
bundled output rather than to the source, so webpack never parses the
test strictly. `json-via-namespace` fails on `__esModule` sitting next to
`default` in `getOwnPropertyNames`, which makes it one of the namespace
shape cases rather than a JSON one.
The scenario put the directive on the bundled output, so a test ran
strictly but was still parsed as sloppy source. A loader now puts it on
the entry instead, which is what test262 means by the strict variant.

That alone un-skips the `yield` case: webpack already rejects the
reserved word once it parses the test strictly.
A configCases fixture written in newer syntax parses locally and fails the
Node 10 job, since webpack does not transpile it and output.environment
only constrains generated code. Records the test.filter.js gate for it.
webpack emits `delete super[(super(), 0)]` unchanged, so the order the
index and the this-binding check run in is the engine's alone, and Node
throws the inner constructor's error unbundled too.

The entry claimed webpack rewrote the `super` reference, which it does
not, so it moves to the list for divergences that reproduce without a
bundler.
It is skipped either way; recording it as a host bug would tolerate the
error instead, which hides a regression in what webpack emits.
Under `output.module` the bundle is a single real module, so the
synthesized `import.meta` was assigned onto the one `import.meta` the
whole bundle shares. Every module that referenced the whole object then
read the `url` of whichever module initialized last, and the objects
compared equal across modules.

Each module now inherits from the bundle's `import.meta` and owns the
known properties, so unknown host properties stay observable while the
url and the identity are per module.
`import.meta.main` compares the module argument against the entry, so any
module reading it was excluded from concatenation outright. An inner
concatenated module is never an entry module — `ModuleConcatenationPlugin`
already rules out entry modules as inner ones — so it can answer the
expression with `false` instead.

Such a module is now barred only from being the concatenation root, where
the comparison still has to run, and its template drops the module-cache
runtime requirements when it renders inside a concatenation.

The whole-object and destructuring forms keep the existing bailout: they
emit a `__webpack_import_meta__` binding whose name is fixed at parse
time, which two inner modules would collide over in one scope.
`require.main` and `import.meta.main` read `__webpack_require__.s`, which
the entry startup assigns only when the chunk asks for the global. That
asked the entry chunk, but a split runtime chunk carries the tree runtime
requirements for the whole entry, so the entry chunk reports none and the
assignment was dropped.

With `optimization.runtimeChunk` this left `require.main` undefined and
`import.meta.main` false in the entry module, in both module and non-module
output. The lookup now resolves the entrypoint's runtime chunk, which is
the chunk itself when the runtime is not split.
Startup code ships per target, so the split-runtime-chunk case now runs on
node, web, webworker and the universal neutral platform, the last with ESM
output. All four dropped the assignment before the fix.
The synthesized binding always took the same name, so feeding a bundle back
into webpack declared it a second time in a scope the first declaration
shadows. The initializer then read the hoisted variable rather than the
host's `import.meta`, and the bundle threw on evaluation.

The name now steps aside when the module source already spells it, which
only re-bundled output does — a first pass emits the same bytes as before.

The case only appeared to pass on an engine that does not support
`await using` at all, where the SyntaxError it expects is raised for an
unrelated reason. Where the syntax is supported, the bundle puts the
declaration inside the module wrapper's body, which is a legal position,
so the parse error never comes and the test's guard runs.

##### Minor Changes

- Wrap concatenated modules in lazy `__webpack_require__.cw` accessors and inline `require()`, keeping a wrapped body's names and side effects intact. (by [@hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#21519](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21519))

- Add performance hints reporting what a build costs: duplicate packages and modules, circular dependencies, broad contexts, large modules and chunks, hotspots, `eval`, missing PURE annotations, polyfills, redundant dynamic imports, OS-dependent rules, cache effectiveness, how chunks load, what splitting refused, why an optimization was skipped, and rules, defines, externals, aliases and barrel reexports nothing uses. An oversized asset names its largest modules, and an entrypoint carrying the runtime recommends `optimization.runtimeChunk`. Enable every check not set individually with `performance.all`, report hints in stats only with `performance.hints: "stats"`, and get them in a stable order that leaves the build hashes unchanged. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Add the `descriptionRelativePath` module rule condition. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21705](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21705))

- Allow marking externals as side-effect-free with a `sideEffects` flag. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21712](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21712))

- Give externals the original request of a context module element. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21780](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21780))

- Resolve `@custom-media` values that are `true` / `false` or name another custom media. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Add the `__webpack_css_server_styles__` module variable to read the CSS collected while rendering without a DOM, and keep that CSS in the order the styles were applied. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21576](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21576))

- Patch the HTML `
` in place on hot update instead of forcing a full reload, including when a `` that never executed is removed. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Scope counter names in CSS modules; fix the `counter()` counter-style and `animation` timeline keywords. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21600](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21600))

- Tree shake CommonJS: `module.exports` object literals, exports destructured from a `require()` binding, unused method requires, and unused side-effect-free `require()` calls and reexports. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Resolve relative entry `baseUri` values and bake one side of a hash cycle. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21750](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21750))

- Minify CSS further, only where the document is unchanged: shorthands and box longhands, `font-weight`, `<position>` and `font-stretch` keywords, colors (polar, Lab and `hsl()` converted to hex), numbers, times, zero units, `calc()` and every math function the spec names folded over constants, selector lists, An+B, keyframe selectors, media-feature ranges, `unicode-range`, `transition` layers, `display`, transforms, gradients, font families, identical repeated declarations, and rules an identical later one makes dead. Abilities are read off the target browsers, `vendorPrefixes` adds and drops vendor prefixes for them, and `rewriteCustomProperties` shortens custom property values. Minification never changes whether a declaration parses, and beautifying keeps every rule. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Safely minify CSS (with source maps) and HTML assets when `optimization.minimize` is enabled, unless a minimizer is already configured for them, making only transformations an engine cannot tell apart. Every rewrite is named as an option, so it can be switched off. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Minify HTML further where the parsed document is unchanged: drop redundant quotes, whitespace nothing renders, escapes text does not need, implied tags, optional end tags nothing prints behind, empty attributes and nested empty elements; fold enumerated values and casing; normalize each attribute against the element it is on; and rewrite `style`, token lists, `srcset`, `sizes`, URL, integer and boolean attributes, viewport `content`, inline `` and a JSON `` body through their own grammars. Adds the `optimization.minimize.html` options `collapseWhitespace`, `mergeStyles`, `minifyConditionalComments`, `minifySrcdoc`, `preserveComments`, `removeEmptyAttributes`, `removeEmptyElements`, `removeImpliedTags`, `removeRedundantAttributes`, `sortAttributes` and `sortTokenLists`, and keeps an end tag the parent, the next element or the adoption agency would otherwise restructure the tree over. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Suggest the closest name or a casing fix anywhere in a failed request. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21727](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21727))

- Add aggregated `shutdown` hook to `MultiCompiler`. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21578](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21578))

- Report which compilers changed on the MultiCompiler `done` hook. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21580](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21580))

- Support an object for an entry's `html` that overrides `output.html` per option. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21574](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21574))

- Configure or exclude each asset type's minifier via `optimization.minimize`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21663](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21663))

- Speed up builds and cut memory: faster CSS, HTML and JavaScript parsing and minification, a built-in scope analyzer replacing `eslint-scope`, faster dependency hot paths, module diagnostics, CommonJS export scanning and concatenated module renaming, runtime modules, parsers, generators and dependencies loaded only when used, one file watcher pool shared between MultiCompiler children, and lower parser, graph and startup memory. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Improve tree-shaking for a namespace reexported as default, and fix `import d from "./mod"; d.member` reading `undefined` in that case. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Warn on cross-kind CSS module export conflicts and let the class win. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21538](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21538))

- Add `output.resourceHints.dedupe` to skip prefetch links for already preloaded/prefetched chunks. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21386](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21386))

##### Patch Changes

- Follow the HTML spec more closely when parsing and printing: frameset content, quirks paragraphs and selects, `` outside foreign content as a bogus comment, `<?target data?>` as a processing instruction, `</>` dropped, comment data and DOCTYPE identifiers read from the tokenizer states, attributes merged from a repeated `
`/`
` tag, legacy JavaScript script types, void `keygen` and font format detection — and hand back the tree a parsed document was built from when printing it. - Generate every CSS and HTML lookup table into `lib/{css,html}/data.js` from `mdn-data`, `color-name` and the spec IDL — including the value-type facts read out of the CSS value-definition grammars — leaving both `syntax.js` files algorithm only. - Emit less runtime code: shorter syntax where `output.environment` allows, no IIFE for a `RuntimeModule` without locals, no unread `__webpack_esm_id__` and `exports.id` chunk exports, and an ESM entry chunk installing its own modules from its local bindings instead of importing itself. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))
