Summary

Since 5.110 ESM output baked a literal import("./chunk.<contenthash>.js") at every dynamic import site, so an importing module's own hash followed the imported chunk's and a change to one lazy route invalidated every chunk up to the initial wave. The ESM chunk loader now holds those specifiers itself, keyed by chunk id, and call sites go back to __webpack_require__.e(id) — the output stays followable by a foreign bundler or a preload scanner, but no importing module carries a chunk hash. Closes #22056.

On the reporter's shape (10 initial chunks, runtimeChunk: "single", [contenthash]), one attribute changed in a component reachable only through a lazy route: the chunk holding the route imports stops invalidating, so a returning user refetches 57.3 KiB gz (37%) instead of 88.2 KiB gz (57%). The initial wave itself moves by +312 raw / +99 gzip bytes (+0.06%), and yarn test:size reports Changed, same case source at +3.25 KiB gzip over 290 assets — ensure chunk and the js handler return per runtime, while the per-site specifiers collapse to one map entry per chunk. So this is a caching fix, not a size win.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — the configCases/analyzable/ suite is updated throughout, plus worker/, the two hotCases/*/analyzable-import cases and statsCases/analyzable-esm-fallbacks. Cases whose subject was a cross-chunk hash cycle or a per-depth specifier now pin that neither shape is reachable.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No, for configuration. The emitted runtime changes shape and __webpack_require__.ei is gone; anything reading it would need updating, but it shipped only in 5.110–5.110.3.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

webpack/webpack.js.org#8387 updates output.chunkFilename to say where an ESM build names its chunks, and drops the performance.analyzableBailouts row for a reason no longer reported.

Use of AI

Claude Code wrote this change and its tests under my direction and review. It was also used to measure the before/after invalidation and size numbers quoted above, and to verify no two builds ship different bytes under one [contenthash].

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • JavaScript module output now centralizes dynamically loaded chunk names in the runtime loader, improving consistency across shared, nested, and circular chunks.
    • Generated imports can use direct module specifiers where supported, while retaining runtime loading for URLs, HMR, and other fallback scenarios.
    • Fetch-priority hints and public-path configurations are better supported for generated dynamic imports.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved chunk naming and content-hash stability, reducing stale references.
    • Multi-chunk loading no longer passes unintended array indexes as fetch priorities.

Baking a literal `import("./chunk.<hash>.js")` at every dynamic import site put the
imported chunk's content hash into the importing module, so a change to a lazily
loaded route invalidated every chunk on the path up to the initial wave — and the
chunk id to filename map in the runtime chunk stored the same hashes a second time.

The ESM chunk loader now holds the literal specifiers itself, keyed by chunk id, and
`.f.j` imports one instead of building a url from `.p + .u(id)`. Call sites go back
to `ensureChunk(id)`, so no importing module carries a chunk hash, the id to filename
map is not emitted where the loader names everything, and the output stays walkable:
every emitted chunk is still reached by a literal specifier a foreign bundler or a
preload scanner can follow. `__webpack_require__.ei` is gone with the call-site form.

Two bailout reasons moved with the decision: an output that cannot use a native
`import()` is reported where the imports are generated, and a runtime reading its
chunks another way reports from the chunk loader that will not serve it.

Closes #22056
A chunk carrying a runtime of its own is reached by a static import and is never
named in the map, so a runtime that can reach one keeps building a url from the
chunk id; a hot update can force-load an id this build never saw, so HMR keeps it
too. Everything else imports the literal the map holds and emits no id table.

Naming an initial chunk there was the other half of this: it made that chunk's hash
and the loader's chase each other, and the pair settled with the entry shipping new
bytes under the content hash it already had.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The ESM runtime moves analyzable chunk import specifiers into runtime-owned chunkImports maps. Import sites use ensureChunk, while HMR, runtime-owned chunks, and unsupported outputs retain URL fallbacks. Tests cover naming, hashes, public paths, contexts, assets, source maps, and bailouts.

Changes

Analyzable chunk import runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime specifier generation
lib/APIPlugin.js, lib/ContextModule.js, lib/RuntimeGlobals.js, lib/RuntimeTemplate.js, lib/util/identifier.js, .changeset/...
Runtime resolution accepts an explicit runtime. Context modules use ensureChunk. RuntimeTemplate generates runtime-owned specifiers and records unsupported output conditions.
ESM loader integration
lib/esm/ModuleChunkLoadingPlugin.js, lib/esm/ModuleChunkLoadingRuntimeModule.js, lib/runtime/EnsureChunkRuntimeModule.js
The ESM loader emits chunkImports, selects literal imports when safe, uses URL imports for fallback cases, and removes the former analyzable-import handler.
Configuration and output coverage
test/configCases/analyzable/*, test/watchCases/chunks/esm-async-chunks-hmr/0/index.js
Configuration tests validate runtime-owned import maps, chunk naming, hashes, public paths, contexts, workers, CSS, assets, source maps, shared initial chunks, and runtime hash updates.
Conformance and fallback validation
test/helpers/analyzableConformance.js, test/hotCases/*, test/statsCases/*, test/RuntimeTemplate.unittest.js
Conformance, hot, stats, and unit tests validate bailout reporting, runtime fallback, lazy compilation, and analyzable ESM output.

Suggested labels: regression

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c39c3

The updated tests validate the runtime-owned map correctly, and mixed initial/async chunks retain the required URL fallback. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Comparing c39c373 merged into 3ca6196 against 3ca6196. Merging this pull request changes the size of 277 asset(s) built from unchanged case source, moves 88 asset(s) whose case source it changes too, adds 8 new asset(s) and deletes 2 asset(s).

Unchanged — 7181 — — —

Changed, same case source is the row that is webpack's doing — those assets are built from byte-identical module source, so what moved is what webpack generates. Changed, case source moved is mostly a case this pull request edited: Case source is how many bytes of module source those cases gained, which is what their output delta has to be read against, and a bundle that grew by less than its case did is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole assets rather than deltas, so a pull request adding cases cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides — it is what a user downloads, and a re-encoding can cut raw bytes while costing wire bytes; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

`reportChunkImportBailout` recorded the reason whatever the chunk loading was. Its
one caller asks only for a chunk the ESM loader does not serve, so nothing wrong
reached a build — but the method now answers for itself.

The unit tests asked `supportsAnalyzable` for a worker's chunk loading, which the
chunk loader decides now; they ask the reporting method instead.

Centralize the resolvable-specifier check in lib/util/identifier.js.

AGENTS.md requires path-shape regular expressions in lib/** to use this utility. The three checks have the same alternatives; RuntimeTemplate.js only includes the opening quote in its input. Add and export one helper that handles this representation difference, then use it at all three sites.

Include initial-chunk exclusions in chunkImportsNeedRuntimeUrl.

analyzableChunkImports excludes initial chunks, but chunkImportsNeedRuntimeUrl only checks hasRuntime(). A JavaScript chunk that is both initial and async can therefore be omitted from chunkImports, while blockPromise or ContextModule.getLazySource still passes its ID to ensureChunk. The ESM loader then emits chunkImports[chunkId]() without a guard, which can invoke undefined and fail the async load. Include the same initial-chunk exclusion in this gate so the loader uses the runtime URL fallback.

Scope the literal checks to chunkImports in the three single-entry cases.

The assertions in chunkhash-name-follows-fill/index.js, contenthash-without-repair/index.js, and html-chunk-stays-analyzable/test.js can match a literal at the dynamic-import site while the emitted chunkImports map is empty or incomplete. Extract the map region and check each expected literal inside it. The two circular cases already detect misplaced literals with their CHUNK_REFERENCE assertions.

Correct the import( cardinality assertions.

split("import(") returns one more item than the number of import( occurrences. Each assertion currently accepts one fewer import than its stated expectation. A missing chunk-map entry can pass these tests.

Use the shared identifier utilities for specifier normalization.

RESOLVABLE_SPECIFIER is a path-shape regexp declared locally in lib/RuntimeTemplate.js. Move this logic to lib/util/identifier.js, or use its existing request utilities, before prefixing the generated specifier. Preserve query and fragment portions and normalize Windows separators.

As per path instructions: “Path-shape regexps and helpers must be imported from lib/util/identifier.js, never re-declared locally.”

…artup

One `runtimeChunk` in front of two entrypoints makes a split chunk initial for
the first and loadable by the second, so the loader's map leaves it unnamed
while an id for it still arrives. Ask whether such a chunk can be loaded here
rather than assuming an initial one never is.

Also wrap `map`'s callback in the context module, whose index would otherwise
be read as a fetch priority, and move the specifier shape to `util/identifier`.

- Export `cssMinify` and `htmlMinify` on `css.syntax` and `html.syntax`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21953](webpack/webpack#21953))

- Make `processResult` async and let a tap rename the asset it rewrote. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21854](webpack/webpack#21854))

- Lower a CSS spelling a target cannot read and write a color fallback before one. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21926](webpack/webpack#21926))

- Minify an embedded body through the embedded path, dropping three html options. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21936](webpack/webpack#21936))

- Take a minified `style` attribute's answer whatever quoting it needs. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21936](webpack/webpack#21936))

- Name chunk imports in the chunk loader, not at each import site. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#22076](webpack/webpack#22076))

- Repair hashed names; under HMR bake hashed url maps and reload moved css names. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21916](webpack/webpack#21916))

- Enable `output.module` for `module` and `modern-module` library types. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#22071](webpack/webpack#22071))

- Name an anonymous `export default class` before its static initializers run. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21910](webpack/webpack#21910))

- Throw on a non-optional read past an undefined `DefinePlugin` member. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#22017](webpack/webpack#22017))

- Reject a fulfilled async cycle member with the cycle's evaluation error. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21921](webpack/webpack#21921))

- Refresh a cached module's `resolveOptions` from the factory, not the pack. (by [@hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#21945](webpack/webpack#21945))

- Read a `` decoded, so a reference-spelled type is minified. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21933](webpack/webpack#21933))

[Compare Source](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/compare/v5.109.2...v5.110.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Wrap concatenated modules in lazy `__webpack_require__.cw` accessors and inline `require()`, keeping a wrapped body's names and side effects intact. (by [@hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#21519](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21519))

- Add performance hints reporting what a build costs: duplicate packages and modules, circular dependencies, broad contexts, large modules and chunks, hotspots, `eval`, missing PURE annotations, polyfills, redundant dynamic imports, OS-dependent rules, cache effectiveness, how chunks load, what splitting refused, why an optimization was skipped, and rules, defines, externals, aliases and barrel reexports nothing uses. An oversized asset names its largest modules, and an entrypoint carrying the runtime recommends `optimization.runtimeChunk`. Enable every check not set individually with `performance.all`, report hints in stats only with `performance.hints: "stats"`, and get them in a stable order that leaves the build hashes unchanged. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Add the `descriptionRelativePath` module rule condition. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21705](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21705))

- Allow marking externals as side-effect-free with a `sideEffects` flag. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21712](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21712))

- Give externals the original request of a context module element. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21780](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21780))

- Resolve `@custom-media` values that are `true` / `false` or name another custom media. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Add the `__webpack_css_server_styles__` module variable to read the CSS collected while rendering without a DOM, and keep that CSS in the order the styles were applied. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21576](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21576))

- Patch the HTML `
` in place on hot update instead of forcing a full reload, including when a `` that never executed is removed. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Scope counter names in CSS modules; fix the `counter()` counter-style and `animation` timeline keywords. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21600](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21600))

- Tree shake CommonJS: `module.exports` object literals, exports destructured from a `require()` binding, unused method requires, and unused side-effect-free `require()` calls and reexports. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Resolve relative entry `baseUri` values and bake one side of a hash cycle. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21750](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21750))

- Minify CSS further, only where the document is unchanged: shorthands and box longhands, `font-weight`, `<position>` and `font-stretch` keywords, colors (polar, Lab and `hsl()` converted to hex), numbers, times, zero units, `calc()` and every math function the spec names folded over constants, selector lists, An+B, keyframe selectors, media-feature ranges, `unicode-range`, `transition` layers, `display`, transforms, gradients, font families, identical repeated declarations, and rules an identical later one makes dead. Abilities are read off the target browsers, `vendorPrefixes` adds and drops vendor prefixes for them, and `rewriteCustomProperties` shortens custom property values. Minification never changes whether a declaration parses, and beautifying keeps every rule. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Safely minify CSS (with source maps) and HTML assets when `optimization.minimize` is enabled, unless a minimizer is already configured for them, making only transformations an engine cannot tell apart. Every rewrite is named as an option, so it can be switched off. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Minify HTML further where the parsed document is unchanged: drop redundant quotes, whitespace nothing renders, escapes text does not need, implied tags, optional end tags nothing prints behind, empty attributes and nested empty elements; fold enumerated values and casing; normalize each attribute against the element it is on; and rewrite `style`, token lists, `srcset`, `sizes`, URL, integer and boolean attributes, viewport `content`, inline `` and a JSON `` body through their own grammars. Adds the `optimization.minimize.html` options `collapseWhitespace`, `mergeStyles`, `minifyConditionalComments`, `minifySrcdoc`, `preserveComments`, `removeEmptyAttributes`, `removeEmptyElements`, `removeImpliedTags`, `removeRedundantAttributes`, `sortAttributes` and `sortTokenLists`, and keeps an end tag the parent, the next element or the adoption agency would otherwise restructure the tree over. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Suggest the closest name or a casing fix anywhere in a failed request. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21727](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21727))

- Add aggregated `shutdown` hook to `MultiCompiler`. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21578](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21578))

- Report which compilers changed on the MultiCompiler `done` hook. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21580](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21580))

- Add `[containedpath]`/`[containedfile]` placeholders, used for `[path]`/`[file]` of asset and html modules with `experiments.futureDefaults`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21592](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21592))

- Configure or exclude each asset type's minifier via `optimization.minimize`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21663](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21663))

- Speed up builds and cut memory: faster CSS, HTML and JavaScript parsing and minification, a built-in scope analyzer replacing `eslint-scope`, faster dependency hot paths, module diagnostics, CommonJS export scanning and concatenated module renaming, runtime modules, parsers, generators and dependencies loaded only when used, one file watcher pool shared between MultiCompiler children, and lower parser, graph and startup memory. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Improve tree-shaking for a namespace reexported as default, and fix `import d from "./mod"; d.member` reading `undefined` in that case. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Warn on cross-kind CSS module export conflicts and let the class win. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21538](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21538))

- Add `output.resourceHints.dedupe` to skip prefetch links for already preloaded/prefetched chunks. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21386](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21386))

##### Patch Changes

- Let a memory-cache etag mismatch fall through to the file cache instead of reporting a miss. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Determine provided exports in dependency order, so a build's module hashes no longer depend on what the persistent cache held. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21630](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21630))

- Emit no dead module and no failing require for an `asset-url` external. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21713](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21713))

- Follow the HTML spec more closely when parsing and printing: frameset content, quirks paragraphs and selects, `` outside foreign content as a bogus comment, `<?target data?>` as a processing instruction, `</>` dropped, comment data and DOCTYPE identifiers read from the tokenizer states, attributes merged from a repeated `
`/`
` tag, legacy JavaScript script types, void `keygen` and font format detection — and hand back the tree a parsed document was built from when printing it. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Clear a `Watching`'s `blocked` flag when its build starts, so it reports only a child actually waiting for its MultiCompiler parent. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21639](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21639))

(by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21446](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21446))

- Keep ESM live bindings for a module library's entry exports, including when the runtime is emitted as a separate chunk. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21349](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21349))

- Fix SplitChunks merging undersized modules into the wrong result group. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21356](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21356))

- Fix named id assignment reusing an already-used numbered suffix, which could produce duplicate module/chunk ids. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))

- Fix inlined non-binary asset modules with `encoding: false` emitting "undefined" instead of their content. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))
