Summary

EMBEDDED_LANGUAGES is what htmlMinify.getEmbeddedTypes() and cssMinify.getEmbeddedTypes() publish, and what a caller reads to say up front which languages it handles — so every entry needs a live offer site behind it, and nothing may arrive that the list does not name. Neither direction was checked anywhere: a language added to the list with no site, or a site removed, showed up only as an unexplained snapshot diff in some other case.

One document reaches all six sites (an inline , a , a JSON , a style attribute, an subtree and the document an holds) and one stylesheet reaches every language a data: payload's media type can name. Each test asserts the offered set against the exported list, then that the renderer's answer is what the serialization carries — being offered a body is only half of minifying it.

The emitted-output side of this is already covered by configCases/html/minimize-embedded-nested and configCases/css/minimize-embedded-data-url; what those cannot state is the list itself. A config case cannot: under experiments.html an inline and become modules of their own, so those two sites never offer.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

test

Did you add tests for your changes?

This is the tests: one case each in test/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js and test/CssSyntax.unittest.js. No lib/ changes.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Claude Code read the offer sites out of the two EMBEDDED_LANGUAGES lists rather than out of the existing tests, checked what was already covered before adding anything, and confirmed each half fails when broken: dropping the fails the html set assertion, removing the @import payload fails the css one, and corrupting one expected token fails the serialization assertion.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added comprehensive coverage for minifying embedded HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, and SVG content across document, source, module, and inline asset types.
    • Added validation for nested embedded content, inline script extraction, stylesheet imports, and data URLs.
    • Confirmed base64 and unsupported media-type payloads remain preserved where appropriate.
    • Added coverage verifying stylesheet default exports and side-effect imports.

Both lists say a caller reads them to know which languages it handles, so
each entry needs a live offer site behind it and nothing may arrive that
the list does not name. Neither direction was checked: a language added
with no site, or a site removed, showed up only as an unexplained snapshot
diff somewhere else.

One document and one stylesheet reach every site, and each test asserts the
offered set against the exported list, then that the renderer's answer is
what the serialization carries — being offered a body is only half of
minifying it.
The offer sites were covered one level deep and in plain text. Three gaps,
each now a real build:

- A `data:` payload reached through base64 is decoded, minified and encoded
back as base64. Only a declined `image/png;base64` was covered before.
- A nested body nests bodies of its own: SVG through the CSS in an inline
`` and again through a `style` attribute, and CSS through the
  document an `` holds.
- An `asset/inline` module is minified for every language a minimizer
claims, not only CSS and SVG.
Every shape a host and a nested body can take, in one build each:

- A document webpack parses as an entry, one it parses as a module, and one
it only emits — each with an inline ``, a `style` attribute, a
  ``, a JSON ``, an `` subtree and an ``
carrying its own ``, and each `` carrying a `data:` SVG two
levels down. Only the emitted-only document keeps its `` inline,
so it alone reaches a JavaScript minimizer there.
- A stylesheet's `url()` payload in every language a media type names, plain
and base64, plus an `image/png` naming none.
- Every `exportType`: the one that emits a stylesheet, the one that exports
its text, and the two that inject it — those last on a target whose
  runtime works without a document.
- An `asset/source` and an `asset/inline` module of every language.
The second config carried only terser and the css minifier, so the sheet
its `style` / `css-style-sheet` export types embed kept its nested html,
json and svg payloads unminified. Share one minimizer list, and assert
the export contract rather than `typeof`, which accepts null.
Each host/language pair gets its own test rather than a handful of cases
carrying hand-written substring expectations: the emitted fragment is
isolated and snapshotted whole, so a regression next to the construct
shows up instead of passing unread.
Match every html construct case-insensitively, and anchor the script one
on the script it means rather than on any script element.
Reading the injected stylesheet off a globalThis registry made the test
depend on state shared with every other case in the worker: the harness
clears it before these deferred bodies run, so the assertion saw whatever
case ran next. Build `style` for the web and read this case's document;
leave `css-style-sheet` where no document exists, so its text is the one
webpack wrote rather than one a parser reassembled.
`link` was covered only by omitting the rule, so nothing said which export
type that case exercised or would notice if the default moved.
Only svg and css were carried base64, so the decode, minify and re-encode
path went untested for the three languages most likely to differ in it.
`minifySrcdoc` gated a pre-pass of its own, but not the offer: with a
`renderEmbeddedSource` set — which is how webpack wires html, css and js
minification together — the document was minified whatever the option
said, so its default-off promise was never kept.

The srcdoc is now one more embedded body, minified by webpack's own
minifier when no caller answers for it, and the option is gone. Two
printer changes keep the output where the pre-pass had it: the offer is
made for a value written bare as well as a quoted one, and an attribute
the renderer answered for is written with whichever delimiter needs
fewer escapes, the source's breaking the tie.

BREAKING CHANGE: `optimization.minimize.html.minifySrcdoc` is removed;
an `` is minified whenever html minification is on.
A JSON `` is an embedded body like any other: it is offered to
whatever renderer a caller set, and minified by webpack's own minifier
when nothing answers. `minifyJson` sat in front of that as a transform
switch of its own, so turning it off also took the body away from a
caller that had asked for it.

`minifyStyles` stays: a `style=""` is not among the languages offered —
how the attribute is written is read back off the minified text — so the
switch still names something the embedded path does not reach.

BREAKING CHANGE: `optimization.minimize.html.minifyJson` is removed; a
JSON `` is minified whenever html minification is on.
An inline `` and a `style=""` are both offered as css — the
attribute as the `block-contents` production it is — so `minifyStyles`
sat in front of the same path `minifyJson` did, and turning it off took
the body away from a caller that had asked for css.

This corrects the reasoning in the previous commit, which kept the
switch on the grounds that a `style=""` is not offered. It is: what
`getEmbeddedTypes` leaves out is a separate language entry for it, not
the offer, and a renderer is handed every one the document holds.

BREAKING CHANGE: `optimization.minimize.html.minifyStyles` is removed;
an inline `` and a `style=""` are minified whenever html
minification is on.
…ithout

The two arms answer different questions. With a renderer, every site is
offered exactly once — an inline ``, a JSON ``, a
``, a `style=""` as the block-contents production it is, an
`` subtree and one per `` — and each answer lands
where it was asked for. Without one, the document records what webpack
minifies on its own, which is also where it stops: a `` of
JavaScript, an `` subtree and every `data:` payload the inline
`` carries are left as written.

A config case cannot drive the second arm: webpack's own pipeline always
supplies a renderer once html, css and js minification share a
minimizer.
… without

The css host's counterpart to the html one. Each language is reached
twice — written out and base64 — so the two arms also say that base64 is
a spelling of the url rather than of the body: the same source is handed
over both times, and an answer is re-encoded to match the url it came
from. A media type naming no language and a url that is not a payload
reach no renderer at all.

Without a renderer the stylesheet around the bodies is minified and the
bodies are not, webpack having nothing of its own to fall back to here.
Codecov read one line of the tie-break uncovered once every flag had
uploaded, and the branch data named five more paths in the same helper:
an answer holding only a quote of one kind, the source delimiter kept
where the answer needs neither, a bare value quoted from its answer
alone, and the deferring path declining.

The last two need different callers to reach: htmlMinify hands every
renderer to the deferring path, so the synchronous branch is only
reachable through the print API. Declining there restores the raw value
as the source spelled it, references and delimiter included, rather than
the decoded document the renderer was shown -- which is what the test
now states.

alexander-akait force-pushed the claude/image-minimizer-miniver-merge-hgogag branch from a7e912d to 2116760 Compare September 3, 2026 20:08
HTML and CSS minification are experimental, so taking three options off
`optimization.minimize.html` breaks no stable surface. The entry was
also a count behind: it dropped three options, not two.
A deferred `style=""` answer was declined whenever it disagreed with the
built-in about whether the value could be written unquoted, so the
built-in's text stood and the answer was dropped without a word. Only a
foreign element's surviving `/>` reads that, to decide whether a space
must precede it -- an html element's tag just ends. Hold the answer to
the built-in's shape only where something reads it.

The default build showed this as an inconsistency between two sites for
the same language: a `data:` payload inside an inline `` was
minified while the identical one inside a `style=""` was left raw,
because minifying it let the value go unquoted.

[Compare Source](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/compare/v5.109.2...v5.110.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Wrap concatenated modules in lazy `__webpack_require__.cw` accessors and inline `require()`, keeping a wrapped body's names and side effects intact. (by [@hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#21519](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21519))

- Add performance hints reporting what a build costs: duplicate packages and modules, circular dependencies, broad contexts, large modules and chunks, hotspots, `eval`, missing PURE annotations, polyfills, redundant dynamic imports, OS-dependent rules, cache effectiveness, how chunks load, what splitting refused, why an optimization was skipped, and rules, defines, externals, aliases and barrel reexports nothing uses. An oversized asset names its largest modules, and an entrypoint carrying the runtime recommends `optimization.runtimeChunk`. Enable every check not set individually with `performance.all`, report hints in stats only with `performance.hints: "stats"`, and get them in a stable order that leaves the build hashes unchanged. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Add the `descriptionRelativePath` module rule condition. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21705](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21705))

- Report inner-graph, AMD and bare `module` bailouts in `optimizationBailout`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21740](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21740))

- Allow marking externals as side-effect-free with a `sideEffects` flag. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21712](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21712))

- Give externals the original request of a context module element. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21780](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21780))

- Resolve `@custom-media` values that are `true` / `false` or name another custom media. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Add the `__webpack_css_server_styles__` module variable to read the CSS collected while rendering without a DOM, and keep that CSS in the order the styles were applied. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21576](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21576))

- Patch the HTML `
` in place on hot update instead of forcing a full reload, including when a `` that never executed is removed. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Scope counter names in CSS modules; fix the `counter()` counter-style and `animation` timeline keywords. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21600](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21600))

- Tree shake CommonJS: `module.exports` object literals, exports destructured from a `require()` binding, unused method requires, and unused side-effect-free `require()` calls and reexports. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Resolve relative entry `baseUri` values and bake one side of a hash cycle. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21750](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21750))

- Minify CSS further, only where the document is unchanged: shorthands and box longhands, `font-weight`, `<position>` and `font-stretch` keywords, colors (polar, Lab and `hsl()` converted to hex), numbers, times, zero units, `calc()` and every math function the spec names folded over constants, selector lists, An+B, keyframe selectors, media-feature ranges, `unicode-range`, `transition` layers, `display`, transforms, gradients, font families, identical repeated declarations, and rules an identical later one makes dead. Abilities are read off the target browsers, `vendorPrefixes` adds and drops vendor prefixes for them, and `rewriteCustomProperties` shortens custom property values. Minification never changes whether a declaration parses, and beautifying keeps every rule. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Safely minify CSS (with source maps) and HTML assets when `optimization.minimize` is enabled, unless a minimizer is already configured for them, making only transformations an engine cannot tell apart. Every rewrite is named as an option, so it can be switched off. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Minify HTML further where the parsed document is unchanged: drop redundant quotes, whitespace nothing renders, escapes text does not need, implied tags, optional end tags nothing prints behind, empty attributes and nested empty elements; fold enumerated values and casing; normalize each attribute against the element it is on; and rewrite `style`, token lists, `srcset`, `sizes`, URL, integer and boolean attributes, viewport `content`, inline `` and a JSON `` body through their own grammars. Adds the `optimization.minimize.html` options `collapseWhitespace`, `mergeStyles`, `minifyConditionalComments`, `minifySrcdoc`, `preserveComments`, `removeEmptyAttributes`, `removeEmptyElements`, `removeImpliedTags`, `removeRedundantAttributes`, `sortAttributes` and `sortTokenLists`, and keeps an end tag the parent, the next element or the adoption agency would otherwise restructure the tree over. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Suggest the closest name or a casing fix anywhere in a failed request. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21727](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21727))

- Add aggregated `shutdown` hook to `MultiCompiler`. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21578](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21578))

- Report which compilers changed on the MultiCompiler `done` hook. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21580](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21580))

- Add `[containedpath]`/`[containedfile]` placeholders, used for `[path]`/`[file]` of asset and html modules with `experiments.futureDefaults`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21592](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21592))

- Configure or exclude each asset type's minifier via `optimization.minimize`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21663](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21663))

- Speed up builds and cut memory: faster CSS, HTML and JavaScript parsing and minification, a built-in scope analyzer replacing `eslint-scope`, faster dependency hot paths, module diagnostics, CommonJS export scanning and concatenated module renaming, runtime modules, parsers, generators and dependencies loaded only when used, one file watcher pool shared between MultiCompiler children, and lower parser, graph and startup memory. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Improve tree-shaking for a namespace reexported as default, and fix `import d from "./mod"; d.member` reading `undefined` in that case. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Warn on cross-kind CSS module export conflicts and let the class win. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21538](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21538))

##### Patch Changes

- Let a memory-cache etag mismatch fall through to the file cache instead of reporting a miss. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21624](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21624))

- Determine provided exports in dependency order, so a build's module hashes no longer depend on what the persistent cache held. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21630](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21630))

- Follow the HTML spec more closely when parsing and printing: frameset content, quirks paragraphs and selects, `` outside foreign content as a bogus comment, `<?target data?>` as a processing instruction, `</>` dropped, comment data and DOCTYPE identifiers read from the tokenizer states, attributes merged from a repeated `
`/`
` tag, legacy JavaScript script types, void `keygen` and font format detection — and hand back the tree a parsed document was built from when printing it. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21841](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21841))

- Clear a `Watching`'s `blocked` flag when its build starts, so it reports only a child actually waiting for its MultiCompiler parent. (by [@bjohansebas](https://github.com/bjohansebas) in [#21639](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21639))

- Fix broken HMR with `output.module` and non-`import` chunk loading by emitting a plain-JSON hot-update manifest. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21460](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21460))

- Fix unused CSS module exports leaking into the JS wrapper. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21301](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21301))

- Fix deferred import evaluation: re-throw cached errors, guard forcing a still-evaluating module, keep re-exported deferred namespaces identical, and evaluate initial-chunk deferred context imports lazily. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21446](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21446))

- Keep ESM live bindings for a module library's entry exports, including when the runtime is emitted as a separate chunk. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21349](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21349))

- Fix SplitChunks merging undersized modules into the wrong result group. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21356](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21356))

- Fix named id assignment reusing an already-used numbered suffix, which could produce duplicate module/chunk ids. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))

- Fix inlined non-binary asset modules with `encoding: false` emitting "undefined" instead of their content. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21406](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21406))

- Decode non-base64 data URIs as UTF-8 so multi-byte characters are preserved. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21366](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21366))

- Keep required JSON data intact when a prototype method (e.g. `arr.includes()`) is called on it. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21433](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21433))

- Recognize modern RegExp flags (`d`, `s`, `u`, `v`) when statically evaluating `new RegExp(...)`. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21366](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21366))

- Merge object-form and dotted DefinePlugin definitions so `import.meta.env`/`process.env` are consistent across direct, whole-object and destructured access. (by [@alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#21419](https://github.com/webpack/webpack/pull/21419))

- Emit an error when an object external has no entry for the used externals type. (by [@&…
