Summary

Keep CSS syntax option selection lazy so HTML and XML minifiers do not load and initialize the CSS parser unless embedded CSS is actually rendered. This reduces startup work for HTML inputs without <style> or style="", especially in minimizer worker processes.

Before:

transforms: webpack.css.syntax.parser.pickTransforms(css)

This eagerly loads syntax-parser.js.

After:

transforms: webpack.css.syntax.options.pickTransforms(css)

syntax-options.js is lightweight, while syntax-parser.js remains lazy-loaded only when embedded CSS is processed.

Runtime verification confirmed:

HTML without embedded CSS -> CSS parser not loaded
HTML with <style> -> CSS parser loaded on demand

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. Updated the CSS syntax facade test and ran the CSS, HTML, and XML minifier tests.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. The existing parser pickTransforms export remains available.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used to inspect the module-loading path, propose the lazy-loading refactoring, implement the changes, and assist with test and lint verification. The final code and test results were reviewed in the session.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • CSS rendering setup is deferred until CSS is first processed, and the selected options are reused for subsequent CSS content. This reduces upfront work when creating a renderer and avoids repeated option selection, while preserving existing rendering behavior.
    • JSON and SVG rendering behavior remains unchanged.
    • Rendering JSON does not load CSS or HTML parsing components; CSS block-content rendering reuses the selected CSS options without loading HTML parsing components.

📝 Walkthrough

HTML and XML minifiers defer CSS transform selection until access. The embedded renderer initializes CSS options on the first CSS render and uses imported source processors. A subprocess test checks parser loading and transform selection.

Changes: Embedded Renderer Initialization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Defer CSS transform selection
lib/html/htmlMinify.js, lib/html/xmlMinify.js
The HTML and XML minifiers use getters to call pickTransforms(css) when transforms are accessed.
Initialize and process embedded content
lib/html/builtinEmbeddedRenderer.js, lib/util/dataURL.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js
The renderer imports source processors and JSON/SVG type constants. It initializes CSS options on the first CSS render and uses the imported HTML processor for SVG. The subprocess test checks parser loading and transform selection across JSON and CSS renders.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0cb46

The current HTML and XML paths defer CSS setup, but the new subprocess test does not exercise those minifiers. Caller-level no-CSS coverage is recommended; the source inspection found no current parser-loading failure.

1052-1064: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add cold-process assertions for CSS parser loading.

The facade test imports lib/css/syntax-parser before it runs and only checks exported keys. The HTML and XML tests assert output, not module loading. An eager parser import would therefore preserve their output and pass the tests. Add fresh-process checks for plain documents and documents with embedded CSS.

Generated code size

Comparing base (57c5e87) to head (7ce6898). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8843 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2243 test(s), 8843 asset(s), 100 emitted nothing.

Merging this PR will regress 1 benchmark

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.

3265-3300: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add caller-level lazy-loading coverage.

The subprocess test calls builtinEmbeddedRenderer directly. It does not call htmlMinify or xmlMinify. Therefore, it can pass if either caller reads transforms while creating a renderer for a complete document with no embedded CSS. Add fresh-process cases that invoke both minifiers and assert that the CSS parser remains unloaded.

Import pickTransforms from webpack/lib/css/syntax-options in the HTML and
XML minifiers, keeping css.syntax to the parser, printer and SourceProcessor.
Load the HTML parser in builtinEmbeddedRenderer only on first render, so
cssMinify with svg no longer loads it for a stylesheet holding no SVG.
Move pickTransforms back into syntax-parser.js and drop syntax-options.js.
builtinEmbeddedRenderer builds its stylesheet options on first CSS render,
and the HTML and XML minifiers pass transforms as a getter, so a document
without CSS still never loads the CSS parser.
Read the embedded-language names from util/dataURL and the CSS and HTML
SourceProcessor from their facades, so no require runs inside a function
and both parsers still load only when a body needs one. Test what loads.
It names a CSS production, not anything about data: URLs, and cssMinify
and the defaults already spell it as a literal.
Spell each keyword in both ASCII cases instead: with i, V8 case-folds the
whole \u00A0-\uFFFF identifier class, which made the first join test of
a worker cost about 8 ms for top-level rules and 16 ms for nested ones.

enableCompileCache() only covers the CLI's own process, so every minimizer
worker compiled the parsers and printers from source on each build. Export
the directory as NODE_COMPILE_CACHE, which worker threads and child
processes read at startup, unless the environment already names one or
disables the cache.
@github-actions github-actions Bot added the area: tooling Repo tooling, codegen, CLI entry (tooling/, bin/) label Oct 15, 2026
Bun and Deno expose module.enableCompileCache without Node's cache behind
it, so the spawned CLI reported nothing and runtimes (bun) failed.
Load on first use, keep caller-facing constants in light modules, let a
disabled option cost nothing, keep laziness in the facades, avoid i-flag
regexes over non-ASCII ranges, hand workers the parent's setup, and prove
it by counting what a fresh process loads.
