Summary

Two CodeRabbit findings that still reproduce on main (from #22852 and #22679):

  • A global replaced through the global object was folded as the built-in: writes like globalThis.Number = … (also window, self, global) now count as writes to that global.
  • [...].slice() was folded to the literal even where the program replaces Array.prototype.slice; it now stays a call when Array.prototype is patched.
Input main prints This PR prints
globalThis.Number = { POSITIVE_INFINITY: 7 }; console.log(Number.POSITIVE_INFINITY); Infinity (read folded to 1/0) 7
Array.prototype.slice = function () { return "S"; }; console.log([1, 2].slice()); 1,2 (call folded to [1,2]) S

Unrelated folds are unchanged: console.log(Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, [1,2].slice().length, Math.PI) minifies identically on both.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, test/unitCases/javascript/printer.unittest.js runs four programs (globalThis.X =, globalThis["X"] =, an assigned and a defineProperty'd Array.prototype.slice) before and after minifying; it fails on main and passes here.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Claude Code swept CodeRabbit reviews on the last 30 printer PRs, reproduced the findings against main, and wrote the fix and tests; reviewed by the author.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Minification now preserves program behavior when global values or built-in properties are changed through globalThis, window, self, or global, including when Array.prototype.slice is replaced. It also avoids built-in optimizations when relevant globals or members may have been changed.

…on a patched array

`globalThis.Number = { POSITIVE_INFINITY: 7 }` before `Number.POSITIVE_INFINITY`
no longer folds the read to `1/0`, and a patched `Array.prototype.slice` keeps
`[1, 2].slice()` a call (CodeRabbit on #22852 and #22679).

📝 Walkthrough

The printer tracks writes through global-object aliases and uses that state to guard global reads and built-in rewrites. Regression tests compare original and minified execution for programs that mutate built-ins.

Changes: Global-write-aware minification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track global writes

to trace property accesses through the global object, so assignments such as
globalThis.Array.prototype.slice update patchedPrototypes for Array. Preserve
the existing handling of direct built-in prototype writes and ensure the slice
guard recognizes the patched prototype.
- Around line 25419-25422: Update the rebound-global scan around
`constantOf(access.property)` so computed global keys that cannot be resolved

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Check `globalThis` writes in every built-in fold, follow `globalThis.Array.prototype`
and `globalThis.Math` writes, and treat an unknown key as rebinding any global.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Track prototype patches passed through optional chains.

If code calls Object.defineProperty(globalThis?.Array.prototype, "slice", { value() { return "S"; } }), globalNameOf rejects the optional globalThis?.Array access. The call also receives a ChainExpression, which writesThrough does not classify as a call argument. The scan leaves patchedPrototypes unchanged, so a later [1, 2].slice() can be replaced with [1, 2] instead of returning "S". Recognize this optional-chain path when recording prototype patches.

Update globalNameOf and writesThrough so Object.defineProperty calls targeting a
prototype through an optional global access, such as
globalThis?.Array.prototype, are recognized and recorded in patchedPrototypes.
Handle the ChainExpression argument while preserving existing detection for
non-optional accesses.
