Summary

Follow-up to #22814, closing more of the gap to swc and oxc.

  • A string method called on a constant holding a string folds, as it does on a literal: const env = "production"; env.toLowerCase().startsWith("prod") becomes !0.
  • A var declared bare and set once from another name is read through that name even after a new or call through it dropped its fixed value (var a, b; a = C; b = C; … new a()). A var declared with a value keeps its own reads.
// before
var n=class{},r=n,t=n;return[function(n){return new r(n)},function(n){return new t(n)}]
// after
var n=class{};return[function(r){return new n},function(r){return new n}]
Output (gzip) before after
octokit chunk (swc fixture, swc's own 6498) 6577 6506
jquery.mobile 1.4.2 62332 62291
three.js — −6 B

octokit now gzips smaller than swc's output.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, in test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Written with Claude Code: it found the gaps by comparing outputs with swc and oxc, wrote the changes and tests, and measured the sizes above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Improved JavaScript minification for constant string-method calls and stable aliases, including constructor references.
    • Added safe simplification of numeric increment and decrement expressions.
    • Added gzip-size comparison to select the most compact eligible output, including optimized name and literal choices.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved optimization handling for initialized variables, reassignment, and string updates.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for constant folding, alias propagation, increment simplification, and gzip-optimized output.

📝 Walkthrough

The compressor now tracks declaration initializers, folds methods on fixed string references, simplifies eligible numeric updates, and selects spelling variants by gzip size. Tests cover these changes and preserve runtime behavior.

Changes: JavaScript minifier improvements

Layer / File(s) Summary
Constant reference folding
lib/javascript/ScopeAnalyzer.js, lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
Variable definitions track declaration initializers. Alias checks and built-in-call detection resolve eligible fixed string references. Tests cover string-method folding, constructor aliases, and reassignment behavior.
Numeric update rewrites
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js
Numeric-only analysis enables -= 1 to become --x and eligible += 1 to become ++x. Tests cover preserved string behavior and arguments-spread output.
Gzip-size-based spelling selection
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer-tree.unittest.js, test/helpers/*, .changeset/110-minifier-constant-receivers.md
The minifier records applied spelling changes, compares eligible variants by gzip size, and uses code length as the tie-breaker. Tests and comparison lists cover the selection behavior. The changeset records the patch release.

The new size-based output selection can return output that is missing comments a custom comment filter chose to keep. It can also leave a spelling switch disabled after a failed run. Concurrent or very large minifications may behave unpredictably or run slowly. The intentional -= 1 rewrite changes BigInt error behavior. Address the comment-retention and switch-restoration issues before merging, and explicitly accept or fix the remaining tradeoffs.

Comparing base (e048c15) to head (8e55cec). Merging this pull request changes the size of 6 asset(s) whose tests it leaves untouched.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Limit reruns by source size as well as output size.

When a large source compresses to 8,192 characters or fewer, this guard permits up to three more parses and compression runs over the full source. Large files dominated by removable code can therefore take several times longer to minify despite the small-result limit. Check the total text input size before starting candidate runs.

preserving the current rerun limit for inputs and outputs within the threshold.

lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js:20319-20320
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude stateful output options from size-choice reruns.

If format.comments is a stateful callback, the trial invokes it again. A callback that retains a license comment on its first invocation can omit it on the trial. The trial then has a smaller gzip size, so this code can return output without the retained comment. Skip size choice for caller callbacks and other non-repeatable output options, or compare candidates without invoking them again.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore the active spelling switch when a trial fails.

If minifyOnce rejects after spelling.enabled = false, the finally block restores only switches already added to off. The active switch stays disabled for later calls through the cached minifier. Track every disabled switch for restoration, including the trial in progress.

Re-run a small program with each measured spelling (literals last, lets)
switched off and keep the output gzip writes smallest.

… it smaller

In a small program, re-run with mangled names taken in English letter order
instead of by counted characters, and keep whichever gzips smaller.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
Also run the measured spellings one after another in their test, and retire
two rival cases no longer bigger.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…sources

The switches the choice flips are shared, so concurrent calls now wait their
turn; a source over 32 KiB is minified once. Regenerate the schema
validators, which the names choice writes up to 9 B smaller gzipped.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
…ice runs

A callback keeping a license comment only the first time it is asked would
otherwise drop it from a trial run, which then measures smaller.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
On Windows the step's own writes can report a change after watching starts,
adding an invalidation or a run; the case asserts the restart, not the count.
