Summary

ProvidePlugin reads an async module (top-level await, promise externals) before it settles, so the provided value is undefined and a rejection goes unhandled. A smaller alternative to #22661: a provided dependency now propagates async like an ESM import, but only from an ES module consumer, and its template adds the provided variable to the module's existing await. The async-module runtime is unchanged; CommonJS consumers keep today's behavior, the same as require() of an async module.

// ProvidePlugin({ providedModule: "./async.js", providedValue: ["./async.js", "value"] })
import { value } from "./async.js";
console.log([value, providedValue, providedModule.value]);
// Before: [42, undefined, undefined]
// After:  [42, 42, 42]

import.defer of an async module that is compiled to a generator (es2016 target) returns undefined on main with a plain import too; that is a separate bug, so the test's es2016 build skips the deferred case.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/configCases/plugins/provide-plugin-async/ (exports, inlined exports, promise externals, rejection, reexports, import.defer, generator lowering, no arrow functions).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • ProvidePlugin now waits for asynchronous modules used in ES modules before accessing their provided values.
    • Async provided dependencies now work with re-exports, external promises, and inlined exports, with failures correctly propagated.

📝 Walkthrough

Provided dependencies now participate in async-module propagation. ProvidedDependencyTemplate adds await handling when both the target and consuming module are async. Configuration tests cover async provided values, external promises, reexports, inlined exports, and rejection.

Changes: Async Provided Dependencies

Layer / File(s) Summary
Include provided dependencies in async propagation
lib/graph/Dependency.js, lib/async-modules/AsyncModuleHelpers.js, lib/async-modules/InferAsyncModulesPlugin.js
The dependency kind map and async-module traversal now recognize provided dependencies. Async propagation follows active provided dependencies from namespace-exporting origin modules.
Await async provided targets
lib/provide/ProvidedDependency.js
When both the target and consuming module are async, ProvidedDependencyTemplate uses the dependency identifier as the target and adds an await fragment. It adds a later assignment when the selected export differs from the target.
Exercise async ProvidePlugin cases
test/configCases/plugins/provide-plugin-async/*, .changeset/060-provide-plugin-async-dependencies.md
The tests cover async provided values, promise externals, reexports, inlined exports, rejection, and multiple target configurations. The changeset records a webpack patch.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset that both runs emit changed size — everything below is new or deleted.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
