Summary

Module concatenation checks targets.includes(module) for every import, then performs a referencesMap.get(module) lookup for the same module. Reuse the existing map to append each target only on its first reference.

Before:

if (targets === undefined) targets = [module];
else if (!targets.includes(module)) targets.push(module);
const entry = referencesMap.get(module);

After:

const entry = referencesMap.get(module);
if (entry === undefined) {
	if (targets === undefined) targets = [module];
	else targets.push(module);
}

Measured scan work in production builds with concatenation enabled:

Imported modules Before
128 16,256 scanned elements
512 261,632 scanned elements

The output was byte-for-byte identical for both cases.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

No new tests. Existing concatenation, deferred import, CommonJS wrapping, cache, and snapshot tests passed: 148 tests and 10 snapshots in the targeted configuration suite, plus the persistent caching concatenation test.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used to inspect the module concatenation implementation, identify the repeated scan, draft the change, and review the resulting diff. The change and tests were verified locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Improved build efficiency when combining imported modules by reducing repeated processing. Projects with many imports may see less redundant work during builds, while the resulting bundled functionality remains unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "perf: avoid duplicate scans in module concatenation" follows the required conventional-commit form with the allowed type "perf". The changeset and code change both target repeated scans during module concatenation: the targets.includes(module) check is removed, and the referencesMap lookup now appends each imported module to targets only on first reference. The title matches the main change and the PR objectives.

Generated code size

Comparing base (759b539) to head (b493986). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit

Unchanged — 9105 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2279 test(s), 9105 asset(s), 101 emitted nothing.
