Summary

Dropping new from a built-in, writing Array()/Object() as a literal, and reading Babel's rest loop as [...arguments] only checked that the name is undeclared. A program that assigns the built-in got different code. They now use readsUnassignedGlobal, which also checks patternWrites now, so an assignment through destructuring or a for…of target counts too.

Error = function (m) { this.m = m; };
console.log(new Error("x").m);

└────────────────────────────┴──────────────────┴────────┘

A sweep of Error, TypeError, RangeError, Array, Object and Function, each assigned 6 ways (plain, in a function, [B] = …, ({ B } = …), for (B of …), B++), with and without new: 84 of 168 programs print differently on main, 0 here. Size on 21 real bundles is unchanged. Without reduce_vars no assignment is counted, so these rewrites now stop there, as the folds already using readsUnassignedGlobal do. 11 terser/swc cases with such options are listed in SWC_SMALLER, and one stale IMPROVED_YET_BIGGER entry is retired.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, in test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js: two KEPT_CASES (terser equality) and a test running the sweep above plus Babel's rest loop at ES2020. All fail on main, and each of the four changes reverted alone fails one.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

I directed Claude Code to find the bug while comparing the minifier's output with oxc and swc, write the fix and the tests, break each change on purpose, and check size and the corpora against main. I reviewed every change myself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved minification when built-in constructors such as Array or Object are reassigned or shadowed. Constructor calls now retain their intended behavior in these cases.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for reassigned and shadowed built-ins, including several assignment patterns and constructor-call forms.

…ssigns in the minifier

Dropping `new` from a built-in, writing `Array()` or `Object()` as a literal and reading Babel's rest loop as `[...arguments]` checked only that the name is undeclared, so `Error = function () {}` before `new Error()` changed what it built. Read them as built-ins only where the program never assigns the name, through a pattern or loop head included.

📝 Walkthrough

Built-in rewrites now require that the referenced global has no assignments or pattern writes and cannot be rebound. Added unit and classification coverage for reassigned built-ins.

Changes: Built-in rewrite safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guard built-in rewrites
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js
readsUnassignedGlobal now rejects assigned and pattern-written globals. Constructor, Array/Object literal, and rest-parameter loop rewrites use this check.
Regression tests and classifications
test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js, test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, .changeset/070-minify-assigned-built-in.md
Unit tests cover reassigned built-ins, local bindings, and an ES2020 arguments copy. SWC transform classifications are expanded, a corpus exception is removed, and a patch changeset is added.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2255 test(s), 8988 asset(s), 101 emitted nothing.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
