Summary

Found by the rebuild fuzzer. A side-effect-free barrel defers a re-export it doesn't use, so ./missing is never resolved. A deferred import and a missing one both have no connection, so they hash alike, but only the missing one renders a throw. Toggling sideEffects in watch kept the module hash and reused the old code. This hashes whether an import is deferred. Under cacheUnaffected, where the module hash itself is memoized, it also treats a module whose deferred requests changed as affected.

// pkg/star.js, with pkg/package.json going from "sideEffects": true to false
export * from "./missing";
export const a = "a";

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/watchCases/lazy-barrel/missing-reexport-side-effects, covering export * and export { b } from under the memory and filesystem caches. It toggles sideEffects both ways and checks that an unrelated edit doesn't regenerate the barrels. It fails on main, fails without the hash, and fails under WatchCacheUnaffectedTestCases without the affected-module check.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

I used and directed Claude Code to find the bug with a rebuild fuzzer, write the fix and the test, break each part of the fix on purpose, and check coverage. I reviewed every change myself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed stale build results in watch mode when changes to sideEffects alter which lazy-barrel imports are deferred. This applies to both memory and filesystem caching.

A deferred re-export and a missing one both have no connection, so toggling `sideEffects` kept the barrel's hash and watch reused code with or without the missing-module throw. Hash whether an import is deferred, and under `cacheUnaffected` treat a module whose deferred requests changed as affected.

📝 Walkthrough

Lazy-barrel status now contributes to ESM dependency hashes, and deferred lazy-barrel requests are tracked in module memory-cache state. New watch tests cover missing re-exports across side-effects settings and cache configurations.

Changes: Lazy-barrel watch rebuilds

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hash lazy-barrel state and track deferred requests
lib/dependencies/esm/ESMImportDependency.js, lib/Compiler.js, lib/Compilation.js
Lazy ESM imports now add a marker to their hash. Memory-cache entries record serialized deferred requests and are invalidated when those requests change.
Exercise watch rebuilds for missing re-exports
test/watchCases/lazy-barrel/missing-reexport-side-effects/**, .changeset/050-lazy-barrel-deferred-hash.md
Watch fixtures test named and star re-exports with different sideEffects settings and memory or filesystem caching. Assertions check loaded values, missing-module errors, and barrel code generation.

Reported by Code Size #4863 for da7954b, computed by this pull request's own code.

Generated code size

Comparing base (755c49e) to head (da7954b). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8843 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2243 test(s), 8843 asset(s), 100 emitted nothing.

Merging this PR will regress 1 benchmark

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚡ 3 improved benchmarks
