Summary

This PR fixes two lazy barrel bugs:

  1. Asking a barrel for a local export activated the side-effect import of its re-exports too (they were deferred as import declarations), building a re-export target no requested name needs.
  2. Fixes export * duplicate factorizations which slows the make phase of module graph and also give one dependency two connections in the module graph. It's also described here.

and rewrites LazyBarrel.js around one map from each export name to the import requests.

Related Lazy barrel PRs since v5.111.1:

  1. Defer ordinary imports while inspecting lazy barrel exports #22282 defers a star re-export target's import declarations while it is only built to look for a name.
  2. fix: preserve lazy barrel forwarding state #22334 keeps forwarding working for names requested after the barrel was built.
  3. fix: keep named re-export ids when the same request is star-reexport  #22351 keeps named re-export names when the same request is also star re-exported

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved lazy loading for barrel exports: requested imports are resolved correctly through chains of re-exports, including star re-exports.
    • Deferred imports can be activated when their exports are requested later, while preserving side-effect behavior.
    • Local exports are correctly prioritized over matching names available through star re-exports, and unused imports remain excluded when safe.
    • Import resolution is validated across builds with and without module concatenation.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Lazy barrel optimization now defers eligible ESM import declarations as well as re-exports. It tracks requests by export name, activates matching deferred dependencies, and forwards names that may be provided by star re-exports.

Changes

Lazy barrel request flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify, activate, and forward requests
lib/optimize/LazyBarrel.js, .changeset/021-lazy-barrel-requested-imports.md
Classification identifies eligible ESM imports and maps export names to deferred requests. Requests activate matching groups and forward names that may be provided by star re-exports.
Test requests across resolved groups
test/configCases/lazy-barrel/resolved-group-resend/*
The test case checks values across wildcard barrels and multi-hop re-exports. Its configurations check for repeated outgoing connections to the same dependency.
Test deferred imports through star re-exports
test/configCases/lazy-barrel/star-unused-import/*
The test case checks a dynamically imported local export and verifies module inclusion based on the build’s side-effect setting.
Test local names and star fallback
test/configCases/lazy-barrel/star-known-ids/*
The test case checks local and forwarded exports, and verifies module inclusion based on the build’s side-effect setting.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 770c7

This change reworks how lazy barrels defer imports and forward export requests. Added tests cover the main scenarios and no concrete defect was found. The owner should watch for build regressions in edge-case re-export graphs.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 770c7

Normal request handling has safeguards against duplicate activation, but an unresolved incremental-build case could leave a needed import out of a later bundle. No attacker-controlled entrypoint or verified security bypass was identified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: A reused barrel may retain a deferred import's lazy flag when a subsequent build requests a local export that requires ordinary import processing. If another re-export keeps lazy-barrel classification active, dependency processing can skip that import. The incremental-build outcome needs confirmation; the evidence does not establish a security bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The potential exposure is generated output from compilations that reuse affected cached barrel modules. The evidence does not establish an independently attacker-controlled request source, tenant boundary, credential path, or deployment change.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Import deferral is gated on a side-effect-free module and an eligible ESM dependency; the filesystem-reading hook identified as a public entrypoint is invoked by the test harness.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Name deduplication and removal of activated groups constrain repeated activation. The inspected unsafe-cache watch fixture checks newly requested re-exports, not whether an import previously deferred is processed when later requested through a local export.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify the reverse request transition with a reused cached barrel, and make dependency lazy-state reconstruction explicit if that transition can retain a stale flag.

Comparing base (9a5a873) to head (770c78b). Merging this pull request moves 9 asset(s) whose tests it edits too, adds 15 new asset(s) and deletes 1 asset(s).

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 2 9 🔴 ↑ +649 B 🔴 ↑ +3.56 KiB 🔴 ↑ +1.83 KiB

Deleted 1 1 -255 B -464 B —
Unchanged — 8271 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset with an untouched test changed size — every change below comes with a test this pull request edited.

- Escape a foreign `<script>` or `<style>` body, which is character data. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22233](webpack/webpack#22233))

- Read a foreign `<script>` or `<style>` body as character data, not as raw text. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22258](webpack/webpack#22258))

- Keep an inline `<style>` body as written when rebuilding a page webpack emitted. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22265](webpack/webpack#22265))

- Fix minified HTML for `style` spellings, CSS quotes, `<noscript>` and a BOM. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22370](webpack/webpack#22370))
