Summary

shortenColors converts a polar or Lab color to hex only where webpack can prove an engine's own conversion lands on the same bytes, and keeps the function in the two places it cannot: a channel too near a .5 boundary for two implementations to round it alike, and a color outside the sRGB gamut, which hex can only clip. optimization.minimize.css.convertApproximateColors takes the nearest byte in both, off by default. This retires the cssMinify.js TODO's third bullet; the two remaining ones keep a TODO each, at the site where they would be written.

The two halves are not the same trade, and the option's description says so: on the boundary it writes the byte esbuild, lightningcss and cssnano write anyway (hsl(134,50%,50%) is #40bf5e for all of them), while outside the gamut it goes further than any of them — lightningcss keeps the function there and writes a fallback before it, which is what colorFallbacks already does. The colorFallbacks path had rounded and clipped this way all along, so the change is one condition at the single choke point; the one guard left standing is a98-rgb / prophoto-rgb, which an engine reads through a transfer of its own.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat — one new opt-in option; nothing changes unless it is set.

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/css/minimize-convert-approximate-colors snapshots twelve declarations, seven converted and five still declined (a98-rgb, prophoto-rgb, a relative color, a mix, and one the conversion is exact for). test/configCases/css/minimize-css-options (html) gains a color in its <style> and its style="", so the nested minifier is held to the same option. minimize-declined points at the new case from its header.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — off by default, and every existing css/html snapshot passes unchanged.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

One new optimization.minimize.css property. Its description in schemas/WebpackOptions.json states both declined cases, which other minifiers make each of them, and the a98-rgb / prophoto-rgb exception.

Use of AI

AI (Claude Code) was used to widen the existing conversion guard behind the option, thread it through schema → cssMinify / htmlMinify → printer, and write the cases. The behaviour was checked against lightningcss directly rather than assumed, which is what corrected the option's description. All output was reviewed and lint, types, the generators and the targeted suites were run locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added the optimization.minimize.css.convertApproximateColors option.
    • When enabled, CSS color values may be converted to nearest hexadecimal approximations during minification.
    • The option applies to regular CSS, inline styles, and embedded style blocks in HTML.
    • Approximate conversion remains disabled by default; colors that cannot be safely converted remain unchanged.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for color conversions across multiple CSS color formats and HTML style contexts.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8b230

With approximate conversion enabled, an unusually oversized Lab color can be emitted as black instead of preserving the source color; the fix is small and should be applied before merge.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

`shortenColors` writes a polar or Lab color as hex only where webpack can
prove an engine's own conversion lands on the same bytes, and keeps the
function in the two places it cannot: a channel too near a `.5` boundary
for two implementations to round it alike, and a color outside the sRGB
gamut, which hex can only clip.

`optimization.minimize.css.convertApproximateColors` takes the nearest
byte in both. It is off by default, and the two halves are not the same
trade: on the boundary it writes the byte esbuild, lightningcss and
cssnano write anyway — `hsl(134,50%,50%)` is `#40bf5e` for all of them —
while outside the gamut it goes further than any of them, lightningcss
keeping the function there and writing a fallback before it, which is
what `colorFallbacks` already does.

The `colorFallbacks` path had rounded and clipped this way all along, so
the one guard left standing is `a98-rgb` / `prophoto-rgb`: an engine
reads those through a transfer of its own, so the hex would name a color
it never paints rather than a near one.

Reject non-finite channels before clamping. An oversized decimal accepted by _COLOR_NUMBER_RE can become Infinity in the lab() path. _labToLinearSrgb then produces NaN; _gammaEncode preserves it, and _clamp255(NaN) returns NaN. _shortestColor coerces that value to zero and can emit black instead of the source color. Return null for non-finite channels before _clamp255.

Finite out-of-sRGB values are intentionally clipped when convertApproximateColors is enabled. a98-rgb and prophoto-rgb are marked ENGINE_TRANSFER_DIFFERS, so the approximation branch excludes them.
