Summary

Fixes #22694

getConcatenatedImports sorts by sourceOrder, then rangeStart. Re-exports through a side-effect-free barrel can share sourceOrder and have no range, so the sort tied and module-graph insertion order decided the concatenation order. That order can differ between cold and warm filesystem-cache builds. The dependency's index in its module's dependencies now breaks the tie.

Before/after, a cold then warm build with cache: { type: "filesystem" }:

// index.js (package.json: { "sideEffects": false })
import { a, b } from "./barrel.js";
export { b, a };
// barrel.js
export { a } from "./a.js";
export { b } from "./b.js";
cold warm

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/configCases/concatenate-modules/reexport-order-connection-tie/ checks the concatenation list is the same with outgoing connections in forward and reversed order (fails without the fix).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed inconsistent ordering of re-exports when multiple imports have the same source position. Re-exports now follow a deterministic order, helping ensure concatenated modules behave consistently and imported values remain correct.

…der ties

Re-exports of one statement through a side-effect-free barrel share
sourceOrder and have no range, so graph insertion order decided their
concatenation order. Break the tie by dependency index.

📝 Walkthrough

Concatenated import sorting now uses dependency position to resolve ties after source order and range start. A new regression case checks that concatenation order remains the same when outgoing connections are reversed.

Changes: Concatenated re-export ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency-index tie-break
lib/optimize/ConcatenatedModule.js, .changeset/023-concatenation-reexport-order.md
Import references record their dependency index. Sorting uses this index after source order and range start, and places references without an index last. The Changeset declares a webpack patch.
Ordering regression test
test/configCases/concatenate-modules/reexport-order-connection-tie/*
The test checks the barrel exports’ return values and verifies that concatenation order matches when outgoing connections are reversed.

Make the fixture produce a source-order tie.

test/configCases/concatenate-modules/reexport-order-connection-tie/barrel/index.js uses separate export statements for a.js and b.js. These references have different sourceOrder values, so bySourceOrder orders them before byDependencyIndex is needed. Reversing the outgoing connections therefore does not make this assertion fail when byDependencyIndex is removed. Update the fixture so the compared references share sourceOrder and have no rangeStart.

@coderabbitai Re the nitpick on reexport-order-connection-tie/webpack.config.js: this fixture already ties. index.js has export { a, b } from "./barrel/index.js", one statement. After side-effects optimization both re-exports point at a.js/b.js with sourceOrder 1 and no range. Checked locally: with byDependencyIndex removed this case fails, and with it restored it passes.

@alexander-akait The nitpick was incorrect. The fixture uses one re-export statement and compares concatenation order with forward and reversed outgoing connections. Your local check confirms that it catches the missing byDependencyIndex tie-breaker. No fixture change is needed. I withdraw the nitpick.

Learning: In webpack's test/configCases/concatenate-modules/reexport-order-connection-tie fixture, index.js uses one `export { a, b } from "./barrel/index.js"` statement. After side-effects optimization, both re-exports target a.js/b.js with sourceOrder 1 and no range. The author verified that the fixture fails without the byDependencyIndex tie-breaker and passes with it. Do not assume separate barrel declarations prevent this fixture from exercising tied sort keys.
