Summary

Grow token tables by token count instead of source length and preserve indices through large-input conversion; also reuse comment filter patterns. A production Lodash build retained 4.14 MiB less parser-buffer memory (46.6% of those buffers), with identical output and no measurable timing change.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: jsMinify.unittest.js, syntax-printer-parse.unittest.js, and a js-minifier-unit benchmark; 226 targeted tests passed.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a; a patch changeset is included.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance

    • Reduced memory use when minifying JavaScript, particularly for large source files.
    • Reuses comment-filter patterns to avoid repeated setup during filtering.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Preserved token positions when parsing large inputs.
    • Comment-filter patterns now behave consistently whether provided as strings or regular expressions. Invalid patterns raise an error only when a comment is tested.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The JavaScript minifier now reuses compiled comment patterns. The parser uses separate token-position lookup buffers and grows token data with the token count. Tests cover comment filtering, extraction, token positions, and repeated parsing. A benchmark and changeset are added.

Changes

JavaScript minifier updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Comment-pattern matching
lib/javascript/jsMinify.js, test/unitCases/jsMinify.unittest.js, .changeset/073-javascript-comment-patterns.md
String comment patterns are compiled on first use and reused. Tests compare string patterns with equivalent regular expressions and check when malformed patterns throw. The changeset summarizes the minifier updates.
Parser token buffers
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer-parse.unittest.js, test/benchmarkCases/js-minifier-unit/index.bench.mjs
Token-position lookup buffers are separate from token data. Token data grows with token count, and oversized-source buffers are cleared before parsing. Parser tests check token positions and repeated-file parsing. The benchmark runs minification on Lodash source.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2282 test(s), 8265 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

Shorten the changeset sentence.

Line 5 exceeds the 80-character limit. Use one imperative sentence within that limit, such as “Reduce minifier buffer memory and reuse comment filter patterns.”

As per path instructions, a changeset must have a “single imperative sentence <= 80 chars.”
