Summary

Fixes #22336. output.clean deleted the previous compilation's *.hot-update.* files once a 10 s window passed, so a rebuild slower than that removed files a client was still about to fetch. CleanPlugin now keeps the last emitted hot update set until a newer one is emitted, on top of the existing 10 s window.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes, updated test/unitCases/HotModuleReplacementPluginCompilation.unittest.js (fails on main, passes here).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed hot module replacement updates being removed during clean builds, preserving updates across slower rebuilds.
    • Improved cleanup behavior so removed assets are not repeatedly checked, while dry-run cleaning continues to retain assets. These changes help keep rebuild output consistent and avoid unnecessary checks during repeated rebuilds.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CleanPlugin tracks hot-update assets across builds and adjusts cleanup handling for removed assets. Watch cases check delayed HMR updates, normal asset removal, and dry-clean behavior. Unit tests and testing guidance are updated.

Changes

Clean output behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track and retain hot-update assets
lib/output/CleanPlugin.js, .changeset/036-clean-keep-last-hot-update.md
CleanPlugin tracks current and retained hot-update paths, includes retained assets absent from the current compilation, and stages the current set for promotion after emit. The changeset describes the behavior.
Test hot-update retention across slow rebuilds
test/watchCases/clean/hot-update-slow-rebuild/*
The watch case checks emitted update files and older update files across numbered rebuilds. It also includes a delayed check after step two.
Test removed-asset cleanup
test/watchCases/clean/dry-removed-assets/*, test/watchCases/clean/removed-assets/*
The watch cases check asset retention in dry mode and asset removal in normal mode. Plugins record filenames checked by the output filesystem.
Align rebuild tests and isolate unit-test outputs
AGENTS.md, test/unitCases/HotModuleReplacementPluginCompilation.unittest.js
Testing guidance directs rebuild-dependent checks to watch cases. HMR unit tests clear output directories before selected checks, and the prior output.clean retention test is removed.

Suggested labels: area: watch

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d7bc5

The watch test now verifies the retained HMR files by filename, and the cleanup lifecycle preserves them until a newer update is emitted. No actionable merge risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d7bc5

The change deliberately keeps the last hot-update files available until a newer update is emitted. No new access path or weakened permission check was established. How those files are served in deployments remains unknown.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly evidenced persistence is limited to generated assets handled by a CleanPlugin instance and its selected output path. No independently reachable service or tenant scope was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Cleanup derives retained names from compilation assets marked for hot-module replacement; its asset collection skips absolute names and names beginning with parent-directory traversal after normalization. No changed authentication or authorization boundary was identified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cleanup errors reset the cached asset map, and an output-write error prevents afterEmit from promoting a newly staged set.

Generated code size

Comparing base (e3b249f) to head (d7bc5c1). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8271 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2284 test(s), 8271 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

Assert the retained HMR assets by filename.

The current count checks already detect the original missing-retention regression, but they do not detect deletion of the preceding .hot-update.js payload or retention of the wrong manifest. Include both .hot-update.js and .hot-update.json in the tracked set, and compare the output set with the current and immediately preceding emitted sets.
