Summary

collectCjsRequireSpecifiers skips a require preceded by a dot so that foo.require(…) is not read as a call, but that also swallowed the last dot of a spread. ...require("./base") was therefore collected nowhere — in an object, an array or an argument list alike — so module.exports = { ...require("./webpack.base.js") } named no build dependency and editing that base config left the persistent cache valid.

Only Bun reaches the scan: FileSystemInfo calls it behind IS_BUN && module.children.length === 0, and Node and Deno recover the same dependencies from module.children. So the stale cache was Bun's alone, which is what the changeset says.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — five cases in test/unitCases/collectCjsRequireSpecifiers.unittest.js, which compares the scan against acorn's tree: a spread into an object, into an array, into a call, one beside a member access, and an optional member access that must stay skipped. Four of them fail before the change.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. A specifier that was collected before still is; the change only stops discarding one that acorn reads as a call.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

Claude Code wrote the failing cases first, then the one-line guard, and ran the verification. yarn lint passes all nine stages and yarn fix:special leaves types.d.ts byte-identical. The blast radius was checked rather than assumed: the scan has a single caller, and reading it is what established the fault is Bun-only — an earlier draft of this change claimed it affected every runtime and proposed a configCases case that could not have failed on Node.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved detection of required build dependencies when require appears alongside spread syntax.
    • Corrected handling of require expressions involving optional member access and spread usage in objects, arrays, and function calls.
    • Added coverage for these syntax patterns to help ensure consistent dependency detection.

The scan skips a `require` preceded by a dot, which rules out
`foo.require(…)` but also swallowed the last dot of `...require("…")`, so
`module.exports = { ...require("./base") }` in a config named no build
dependency and editing that base left the pack valid.

Only Bun reaches the scan — Node and Deno recover the same dependencies
from `module.children` — so the stale cache was Bun's alone.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2223 test(s), 7799 asset(s), 93 emitted nothing.
