Summary

In watch mode, a file deleted while a build runs never triggers a rebuild. webpack pauses its watcher during a build and attaches a new one with the build's start time; watchpack tells that new watcher what changed since then, but not what was removed. The fix is in watchpack: webpack/watchpack#345. Draft until watchpack releases it; this PR then bumps watchpack.

This made WatchTestCases › recover-from-error › restored-commonjs-reexport unstable on macOS (#22640): FSEvents can deliver the step's deletions after the later-dep.js creation has started a build. Forcing that timing on Linux:

deletions land after the creation watchpack 2.5.2 with webpack/watchpack#345
55–110 ms (during the build) No build reported the change to …/name-dep.js, …/whole-dep.js pass
150 ms (after the build) pass pass

AGENTS.md gains a rule: a dependency's bug is fixed in the dependency, and the webpack PR only bumps it, with a regression test.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. test/unitCases/Watch.unittest.js deletes a dependency in afterCompile of a running build and expects a rebuild reporting it in removedFiles. It fails on watchpack 2.5.2 and passes with webpack/watchpack#345, as do the watch unit tests and WatchTestCases.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The dependency rule is documented in AGENTS.md.

Use of AI

Claude Code read the macOS CI log, traced the lost removal into watchpack, wrote the watchpack fix, this regression test and the AGENTS.md rule, and ran the watch suites and lint. A maintainer chose to fix it in watchpack rather than work around it here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Watch mode now detects files removed during an active build and reports them in a subsequent rebuild.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for removing a dependency while a watch-mode rebuild is running.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a watch-mode regression test for removing a required file during a running build, a patch changeset describing the scenario, and repository guidance for dependency-rooted bugs and requested workarounds.

Changes: Watch-mode removal regression

Layer / File(s) Summary
Removal during a running build
test/unitCases/Watch.unittest.js, .changeset/013-watch-removal-during-build.md
The test modifies one required module, removes another during afterCompile, and checks that a later watch callback reports the removed module in compiler.removedFiles. The changeset describes a watch-mode rebuild when a file is deleted during an active build.

Dependency-rooted bug guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependency fixes and workarounds
AGENTS.md
The guidance calls for fixing dependency-rooted bugs in the dependency repository with a test, then updating webpack’s dependency and adding a regression test. A requested stopgap must use a WORKAROUND comment naming the package.

The new regression test waits for a removal event the unchanged watcher will not deliver, so the normal unit suite will time out. Add the replay fix before merging.

Generated code size

Comparing base (65f625c) to head (0c870a0). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8810 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2234 test(s), 8810 asset(s), 99 emitted nothing.

Replay removals for watched directories.

When a directory removal reaches the paused old Watchpack watcher, _onRemove stores it in oldWatcher.aggregatedRemovals without emitting an event. The replacement watcher registers that directory, but this guard replays only paths in filesLookup. Closing the old watcher does not forward its pending removals, so a directory-only removal can prevent the next watch callback and rebuild.

Update the `oldWatcher.aggregatedRemovals` replay guard to include paths in
`directoriesLookup` as well as `filesLookup`, so removals of watched directories
are replayed through `this.watcher._onRemove`.

Replay removals before adding this test.

When b.js is deleted during afterCompile, lib/watch/Watching.js has already paused the old watcher and consumed its pending events. Watchpack 2.5.2 stores the later removal in that paused watcher, but its replacement watch replays outdated changes, not removals. The unchanged handoff therefore does not populate compiler.removedFiles, so this callback can remain open until the 10-second Jest timeout and fail the normal unit-test workflow.

Carry paused-watcher removals into the replacement watcher, or bump Watchpack to a release that provides removal replay, before relying on this test.

Update the watcher handoff in `lib/watch/Watching.js` to carry removals recorded
by the paused watcher into the replacement watcher, so `compiler.removedFiles`
includes `b.js` and this test can close. Alternatively, use a Watchpack release
that replays removals during replacement-watch setup.
