Summary

When nesting is lowered for browsers that don't read it (the default browserslist includes Chrome 109), a rule nested inside one whose selector opens on a combinator was written as :is(~b) c. No engine parses a relative selector inside :is(), so the whole rule was dropped. A list mixing selectors that name & with ones that don't also lost the parent the plain selectors imply. Found by checking Swiper 14 against the source in Chrome: its vertical navigation icons lost their rotation.

/* input */
a{b,~b{c{color:red}}}
/* before */
a :is(b,~b) c{color:red}
/* after */
:is(a b,a~b) c{color:red}

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, and a browser-checked fixture in test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed CSS nesting minification for rules opened with a relative combinator, preserving nested selectors and their computed styles.
    • Improved handling of nested selector lists and deeper nesting so lowered selectors remain valid.

… when lowering

Lowering resolves nested rules innermost first, so a rule inside one whose
list opens on a combinator was written as :is(~b) c, which no engine
parses, and a list mixing selectors that name & with ones that do not lost
the parent the others imply. Such a parent is now written with & in every
selector, which the next level out fills in. Found in Swiper 14 on the
default browserslist.

📝 Walkthrough

Nested CSS lowering now normalizes selector preludes before resolving them against their parent. Watch tests retry dropped deletion events and compare build timing with the plugin’s measured busy-wait duration.

Changes: CSS nesting lowering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize nested preludes before lowering
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, .changeset/109-css-nested-relative-lowering.md
_parentNamed adds parent references when needed. Nested rules resolve against the adjusted prelude, while top-level rules use the original prelude. Tests cover combinator-leading selectors and computed color preservation. The changeset records a patch release.

Watch test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry dropped deletion events
test/templates/WatchTestCases.js
The watch-test template recreates and removes a deleted file when its parent directory exists. A matching missing dependency clears an unseen change only when the file exists.
Measure build timing against plugin burn
test/watchCases/performance/hotspots-per-build/*/index.js, test/watchCases/performance/hotspots-per-build/webpack.config.js
The plugin records the elapsed duration of its busy wait. Three performance tests compare reported build time with the measured duration.

🚀 New features to boost your workflow:
  • ❄️ Test Analytics: Detect flaky tests, report on failures, and find test suite problems.
  • 📦 JS Bundle Analysis: Save yourself from yourself by tracking and limiting bundle sizes in JS merges.

String#trim also takes U+1680 and the other Unicode spaces, which an
identifier carries as ordinary characters, so .b<U+1680> became .b.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8843 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2243 test(s), 8843 asset(s), 100 emitted nothing.

hotspots-per-build bounded a 130 ms busy loop by wall clock, so a pause
inside the loop under Bun --smol failed it; it now compares the report
with the loop's own measured time, which still catches carried-over time.

The watch harness could not re-send a deletion macOS dropped, since the
retouch skipped files that no longer exist: it now deletes them again,
and counts a deleted file a build resolved as missing as seen.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 28 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
