perf(devtool): release the eval devtool's cached module sources - #22358
Conversation
`EvalDevToolModulePlugin` reads every module's source to build its eval wrapper, which leaves the source holding a flattened copy nothing reads again. Clearing it follows the same feature-detected `clearCache` pattern `NormalModule` and `SourceMapDevToolPlugin` already use. Measured on a 2201-module build with `devtool: "eval"`: retained heap 173.25 -> 150.27 MiB, emitted output byte-identical, no rebuild penalty over five watch builds.
Its types now ship in a `types/` directory, so `types.d.ts` imports them instead of inlining them. The public type surface is unchanged: 876 exported names before and after, with `CacheClass` and `ResolveOptions` renamed internally but still exported under their original names.

Source: Path instructions
`EvalDevToolModulePlugin` hands an external module's source back untouched, so its cache is never cleared. Asserting over every rendered source made the case error with `cleared 2 of 3 rendered sources` wherever an external reaches `renderModuleContent`, which a development-mode build of this fixture does.

Summary
EvalDevToolModulePluginreads every module's source to build itsevalwrapper. On aCachedSourcethat read memoizes a flattened copy inside the source, and since the plugin returns a newRawSourcein its place, nothing reads that copy again — it is retained for the rest of the build.Isolated with
devtooloff, changing nothing but whether the sources are read: 120.69 MiB retained without the read, 143.98 MiB with 2161 sources memoized. Clearing it after wrapping uses the same feature-detectedclearCachepatternNormalModuleandSourceMapDevToolPluginalready use, whichwebpack-sourcesdocuments as a memory hint that never affects correctness or output.Measured on a 2201-module build with
devtool: "eval", arms in separate processes at equal-length paths, median of 3: retained heap 173.25 → 150.27 MiB, emitted output byte-identical, and no rebuild penalty over five watch builds (−24.2 MiB still held after the fifth). This matters becauseevalis thedevtooldefault inmode: "development".Also updates
enhanced-resolveto 5.26.0. Its types now ship in atypes/directory, sotypes.d.tsimports them instead of inlining them; the public type surface is unchanged (876 exported names before and after —CacheClassandResolveOptionsare internal renames still exported under their original names). What kind of change does this PR introduce?
perf, plus a dependency update.
Did you add tests for your changes?
Yes —
test/configCases/source-map/eval-clears-source-cache/observes that every rendered source is cleared and that reading it afterwards still returns the same text. It fails without the change (cleared 0 of 1 rendered sources).Does this PR introduce a breaking change?
No. Emitted output is byte-identical, and
clearCacheonly makes a later read more expensive. If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?
n/a
Use of AI
Yes, Claude Code was used: it attributed the development-versus-production retained-heap gap to one option by flipping the five differing defaults one at a time, then to memoization by heap-snapshot class attribution and a single-variable probe, implemented the change and the test, and measured both arms in separate processes at equal-length paths with emitted output hashed for equality. Two of its own hypotheses were tested and disproved along the way (the CSS source-map leg, and retained
OriginalSourcevalues), and its first description of the mechanism was wrong until the probe corrected it.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
