Summary

First step on the gaps #22389 lists against swc: the biggest group there is inlining functions. terser inlines an IIFE only when its body folds to one expression, so a statement like !function(){try{…}catch(e){}start()}() keeps its wrapper.

This adds an improve phase to webpack's printer, switchable like correct. After compressing, a call in place in a statement (alone, or inside the sequence terser joins statements into) whose value is dropped and which passes nothing has its body run in place: spliced into the list, or kept in one block when it declares a let, const or class. It runs only where the body provably behaves the same there: no var, function declaration, return, label, directive, parameter, name, async/generator, eval/with, and, for a function, no this, arguments, new.target or super. It runs after compressing so terser first inlines what it would from inside the function, and never under expression.

// input
(() => { class A { cycle() { return B; } } class B { cycle() { return A; } } sideEffectWith(A); })();
!function () { try { init(); } catch (e) { report(e); } start(); }();
Output (passes: 2, mangled) Raw Gzip
Before (()=>{class t{…}class c{…}sideEffectWith(t)})(),function(){try{init()}catch(t){report(t)}start()}(); 132 115
After {class t{…}class c{…}sideEffectWith(t)}try{init()}catch(t){report(t)}start(); 109 99

Over the terser and swc corpora, 291 outputs change, all smaller: 4,432 bytes raw and 2,882 gzip less (43 outputs under the default minimizer's options, 375 gzip). One large bundle is 31 bytes smaller but 1 byte bigger gzipped; it is listed with that reason.

The corpora suite now accepts a byte difference only where switching both correct and improve off gives terser's bytes back, and fails where improve writes more than without it (gzip decides). Every output whose test states what it prints still prints it. In test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, the 5 cases now no bigger than swc's output are retired, and 31 inline cases whose terser options leave inlining off move to the options group: 768 cases remain.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

feat

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js adds 13 cases that must print the same, be shorter, and give terser's bytes back with the phase off, and 21 that must stay exactly as terser writes them (one per guard, plus inline: false and expression); the expression test fails without its guard. test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js checks every corpus output as above; it passes, 232 tests in about 375 s against 340 s on main, as each output differing from terser is minified once more without the phase.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. Only webpack's printer, used under experiments.futureDefaults, writes less; terser as published is unchanged.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

docs/syntax.md describes the improve phase and how the suite holds it.

Use of AI

AI wrote the phase, the tests and the suite changes, grouped the swc gaps to pick this transform, and measured the corpus savings. The guards were checked one by one with unit cases, and the size check caught two earlier versions that wrote more (unwrapping before terser's own passes, and a doubled block).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • JavaScript minification can inline eligible zero-argument function calls when their return values are unused, potentially reducing output size while preserving runtime behavior. The optimization is controlled by improvements.enabled and may not apply when minifier options or code patterns are incompatible.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the minifier documentation to describe the optimization phase, its enablement setting, and how minification output is checked against other tools.

Add an `improve` phase, switchable like `correct`, which after compressing
writes a statement calling a function in place, with nothing passed, as its
body: spliced into the list, or a block when it declares something scoped.
The corpora suite accepts a difference only where switching both phases off
gives terser's bytes back, and fails where `improve` writes more.
terser joins adjacent statements into one sequence first, so split it at
each call run in place. A body kept in a block is written as one block.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The JavaScript minifier adds an improve phase after compression. The phase rewrites eligible calls to zero-argument functions. Tests and documentation cover the phase, its configuration, output comparisons, and a new Oxc corpus.

Changes

JavaScript minifier improvement phase

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register and apply the improve phase
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, docs/syntax.md, .changeset/047-javascript-minifier-unwrap-iife.md
The minifier registers an improve phase after correct and exposes optional improvements state. The phase rewrites eligible calls when inlining is enabled and expression mode is off. The documentation describes the phase and its disable option.
Validate improvements and phase output
test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js, test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, test/helpers/swcSmaller.js
Unit tests cover improved and retained calls, runtime output, and configuration options. Corpus tests compare output with phases disabled, check error outcomes, and track size exceptions. Fixture categories distinguish inlining differences from option differences.
Add Oxc corpus comparisons
test/specCases/minify-corpora.spectest.js, test/helpers/oxcMinifyBatch.js, test/helpers/swcSmaller.js, package.json, .gitmodules, .github/workflows/test.yml, .prettierignore, cspell.json, eslint.config.mjs, jest.config.js, TESTING_DOCS.md, docs/architecture.md
The corpus runner discovers Oxc test inputs and compares eligible Oxc and webpack outputs. The Oxc submodule, dependency, workflow checkout, tooling exclusions, and corpus documentation are added.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 726f7

The improve phase now respects the explicit no-inline annotation, so the earlier concern is addressed. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains in the reviewed changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7ff6d

The change affects generated JavaScript and adds a test-only subprocess. Eligibility checks, scope preservation, and explicit opt-outs limit exposure. No concrete security bypass was established, but complete semantic and security coverage remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Production impact follows JavaScript assets minified with the webpack printer selected. The Oxc child is confined to corpus testing, including CI, and inherits the test runner’s operating-system authority; process separation provides crash containment, not a security sandbox.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Corpus text reaches Oxc as JSON job data and is passed to minifySync. The launcher uses a fixed executable and helper path without shell invocation, and the helper reads stdin and writes JSON to stdout rather than evaluating input or writing corpus-derived files.
  • observed — Runtime output comparisons reuse the reference sandbox and a configured VM timeout. The sandbox’s implementation was not independently reviewed here, so this establishes reuse of an existing execution control rather than proof of hostile-code isolation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failed Oxc batches are discarded and retried per job, preserving source order and returning an error for a failed single job. Repetition duplicates computation rather than accepted persistent effects because the helper publishes only a completed JSON result.
  • inferred — Temporary phase disabling preserves prior state during sequential success or rejection. The cached switches are shared, so overlapping calls would lack isolation; current awaited comparison callers provide counterevidence against an active overlap path.

Generated code size

Comparing base (938b3dc) to head (726f788). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8312 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2298 test(s), 8312 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip calls marked /*@__NOINLINE__*/

calledInPlace never reads the call's annotations. The improve phase therefore writes the body of a /*@__NOINLINE__*/(() => { … })() call in place. Terser's own inline_into_call refuses to do this: it checks hasAnnotation(self, _PURE | _NOINLINE) before it flattens a call.

  • Trigger: a statement-level IIFE with @__NOINLINE__, no arguments, and a body that passes runsAsBlock. Terser leaves it as a call.
  • Result: the user's explicit opt-out is ignored. For example, a function boundary kept for performance or for stack traces disappears under experiments.futureDefaults.

The fix is one more check on the call node:

Proposed fix
 		if (
 			!(call instanceof A.AST_Call) ||
 			call instanceof A.AST_New ||
 			call.optional ||
-			call.args.length > 0
+			call.args.length > 0 ||
+			(call._annotations & A._NOINLINE) !== 0
 		) {
 			return undefined;
 		}

A unit case for this belongs in test/unitCases/syntax-printer.unittest.js, next to the cases that must stay as terser writes them.

Preserve await and yield identifier context before moving an IIFE body.

With compress: { inline: true }, runsAsBlock accepts a sloppy ordinary IIFE containing await or yield references. runInPlace then moves the body into the enclosing function.

For example:

globalThis.yield = 7;
function* outer() {
	!function () {
		throw yield;
	}();
}
outer().next();

The original IIFE throws 7. After insertion into outer, yield becomes a yield expression. The first next() yields instead of throwing. An await reference can similarly produce invalid syntax inside an async function.

Reject these context-sensitive references before moving the body.

The improve phase now notes during compression whether any statement
calls a function in place, and walks the finished tree read-only only
then, instead of rebuilding every statement list on each compress.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
The improve phase moved a function's body into its caller even when the
call was marked @__NOINLINE__, which terser honors, or when the body named
yield or await, which a generator or async caller reads as its own.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01ViD41i2KdwwGxrDk7yrjeD
Adds oxc's minifier tests as a corpus, read from the inputs its Rust tests
pass (TypeScript left out), held to terser's bytes like the others. Under
the default minimizer's options every source but test262's is also
minified by oxc-minify, in a child process since an oxc panic aborts it:
webpack's output may be no bigger than oxc's unless OXC_SMALLER says why,
and an oxc output that misprints is no lead.
