Summary

A shared runtime marks CSS initial for another entry as loaded even when that entry never ran. Keep asynchronously reachable stylesheets loadable.

Related: web-infra-dev/rspack#15858.

Importing the feature from the main entry Stylesheet requests Result
Before 0 Import resolves without the CSS
After 1 Import waits for the stylesheet; styles apply

The three fixture runtimes gain 559 / 994 / 1,141 gzip bytes (classic / ESM / universal) for the missing loader; three control cases remain unchanged.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/configCases/css/shared-runtime-loading/ covers classic, ESM and universal output, stylesheet completion and repeated imports. All 98 selected checks pass across ConfigTestCases and ConfigCacheTestCases, as does yarn lint. All changed executable lines are covered.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue where stylesheets shared by initially loaded content and asynchronously loaded content could be missed by the asynchronous loading process.
    • Shared stylesheets now load correctly in supported web and combined web/Node.js configurations, including module output.
    • Repeated imports continue to use a single stylesheet link, avoiding duplicate links while preserving the expected page styling.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS loading runtime now keeps a CSS-bearing initial chunk loadable when that chunk is also asynchronously reachable. New configuration cases and a test cover shared-runtime stylesheet loading across web and web/node targets and module output modes.

Changes

Shared-runtime CSS loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Async-reachable CSS chunk handling
lib/css/CssLoadingRuntimeModule.js
_getLoadableChunks excludes an initial CSS chunk from initialChunkIds when the chunk is also asynchronously reachable.
Shared-runtime regression coverage
test/configCases/css/shared-runtime-loading/*, .changeset/016-css-shared-runtime-loading.md
Three configurations cover web and web/node targets with module and non-module output. The test checks the imported value, stylesheet URL and load event when a DOM is available, computed body color, and link count after a second import. The Changeset declares a patch release.

Possibly related PRs

  • webpack/webpack#21862: Both changes modify how CssLoadingRuntimeModule handles initial CSS chunks. That PR removes the runtime when only initial CSS chunks exist; this PR keeps an initial CSS chunk loadable when it is also asynchronously reachable.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
