Summary

The minifier joins adjacent rules with the same block into one selector list. One selector an engine cannot parse invalidates the whole list, so joining a valid rule to an invalid one drops the valid rule too:

/* input  */ .a{color:green}.b:first{color:green}
/* before */ .a,.b:first{color:green}   /* .a loses its color in every browser */
/* after  */ .a{color:green}.b:first{color:green}

The join check passed any pseudo the compat table names, in any shape. Fixed:

  • @page pseudo-classes (:first, :left, :right, :blank) are left out of the table (mdn-data's "CSS Paged Media" group).
  • The table is keyed by shape (:hover, :nth-child(, ::cue, ::cue(), so a bare :nth-child or ::part, or :hover(odd), no longer passes; only an :nth-*() may carry an argument.
  • A pseudo-element must end its selector (.b::before.c, b:before c).
  • With no browserslist target, a pseudo joins only if Chromium, Gecko and WebKit each read it in some release (:playing is not in Chromium).

Checked by taking every pseudo in the table, in 5 shapes and with/without arguments (3,800 selectors), and asking Chromium to parse each one the minifier would join:

joined Chromium rejects (before) Chromium rejects (after)
no target 194 599 0
modern browserslist 194 456 0

Firefox and WebKit are covered by the new equivalence case, which CI runs in each. Output size over the CSS comparison corpus (70 sheets) is unchanged.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js (six shapes kept apart, and an unshipped pseudo with no target) and test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js ("a rule beside one whose selector no engine parses"), both failing before the fix.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed CSS optimization that could cause valid styles to be dropped when combined with neighboring selectors that some browsers cannot parse.
    • Selector rules are now combined only when their pseudo-classes and pseudo-elements can be safely interpreted across supported browsers. Invalid selector shapes and malformed :nth-*() arguments remain separate, helping preserve expected styles in minified CSS.
    • Corrected handling of whitespace in :nth-*() expressions so nonbreaking spaces are not treated as valid CSS whitespace.

Adjacent rules with the same block were joined whatever pseudo a selector
held: a @page pseudo-class, a pseudo given an argument it takes none of or
missing one it needs, a pseudo-element with more after it, or one no shipping
Chromium reads. Each makes the joined rule invalid, so its other selector lost
the block too.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS parser now distinguishes pseudo-class and pseudo-element forms when checking whether selectors can be joined. It uses pseudo support data and CSS syntax checks. Tests cover invalid or unsupported selectors and rule output.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pseudo support profiles
tooling/generate-css-data.js, lib/css/syntax-parser.js
Support collection skips CSS Paged Media selectors and records functional and bare pseudo spellings separately. Without a browser selection, the parser requires support across Chromium, Firefox, and Safari.

lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, .changeset/107-css-join-invalid-selectors.md
The parser restricts accepted pseudo-class arguments and pseudo-element placement. The printer accepts only CSS whitespace when parsing An+B. Tests cover invalid and unsupported selectors, including output that keeps rules separate. A patch changeset records the change.

Generated code size

Comparing base (bf1e489) to head (9e08180). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 8609 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2218 test(s), 8609 asset(s), 99 emitted nothing.

The shape took any run of digits, signs, n and spaces, so :nth-child(3 n) or
(n2) joined a rule an engine then dropped with its neighbor.

whitespace characters instead of `\s*` at every whitespace position, and add an
NBSP regression case confirming it is not accepted as An+B whitespace.

Merging this PR will regress 1 benchmark

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 29 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.

Footnotes

  1. 6 benchmarks were skipped, so the baseline results were used instead. If they were deleted from the codebase, click here and archive them to remove them from the performance reports. ↩

  2. No successful run was found on main (fa15f02) during the generation of this report, so 13ff092 was used instead as the comparison base. There might be some changes unrelated to this pull request in this report. ↩

U+00A0 is an identifier's character, not CSS whitespace, but `\s` took it
for one: `[c]<U+00A0>b` joined a valid rule into a list no engine parses,
and `:nth-child(n<U+00A0>+<U+00A0>2)` was rewritten into a valid `n+2`.

- Treat a browserslist target given at a bare major version (e.g. `safari 10`) as `<major>.0` when a feature's first supported version is a `[major, minor]` pair, so it is no longer reported as unsupported. (by [@Eshiv-Pandey](https://github.com/Eshiv-Pandey) in [#22280](webpack/webpack#22280))
