Summary

Concatenation and the inlined-entry rename kept every analysed module's whole ast alive until code generation finished, for one lookup each: is this identifier the value of a shorthand property? ScopeAnalyzer now records where each shorthand property's identifier starts, so the rename reads an offset and neither caller keeps the ast; a scope kept its opening node too, which held the tree by itself, so it now keeps that node's type and offset instead. getPathInAst had no other caller and is removed with its helpers.

Over a 1007-module concatenation (three.js + lodash-es, 242k ast nodes), GC-stabilized live heap at the end of analysis drops 87.4 MB → 71.1 MB, peak RSS 221.3 MB → 209.0 MB and GC time 133 ms → 105 ms (n=9 per arm, alternating processes; those three ranges are disjoint). Total CPU and wall move less than the run-to-run spread, so this is a memory change rather than a speedup — a --cpu-prof attribution puts the removed tree search at 0.14% of CPU.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/concatenate-modules/shorthand-property-collision covers renaming into shorthand, computed, method and pattern positions, plus four cases in test/unitCases/ScopeAnalyzer.unittest.js. test/unitCases/getPathInAst.unittest.js is removed with the function it tested.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. Scope.block and getPathInAst are internal to the analyser and lib/util/concatenate, with no caller outside lib/.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used to write the change, the tests and the benchmark harness, and to run the measurements reported above. Every number here comes from a run on this branch against main in a git worktree, not from an estimate; the first attempt at this change measured no win, which is what surfaced Scope.block as the second handle on the tree.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed an issue where module concatenation could incorrectly rename variables used in shorthand, computed, method, or destructured object properties.
    • Improved generated bundles to preserve correct property names and exported values when imported bindings are renamed during optimization.
  • Tests

    • Added regression coverage for shorthand-property collisions and related object property patterns.

Concatenation and the inlined-entry rename kept every analysed module's
whole ast alive until code generation finished, for one lookup each: is
this identifier the value of a shorthand property?

The analyser now records where each shorthand property's identifier
starts, so the rename reads an offset instead of walking the tree, and
neither caller keeps the ast. A scope kept its opening node too, which
held the tree by itself; it now keeps that node's type and offset.

Over a 1007-module concatenation (three.js + lodash-es, 242k ast nodes),
the GC-stabilized heap at the end of analysis drops from 87.44 MB to
71.06 MB.

getPathInAst had no other caller and is removed with its helpers.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change records shorthand-property identifier offsets during scope analysis. Concatenation and inline-variable renaming use these offsets instead of retaining parsed ASTs or walking AST paths. Regression coverage validates shorthand-property collision cases.

Changes

Concatenation renaming

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scope metadata and shorthand tracking
lib/javascript/ScopeAnalyzer.js, test/unitCases/ScopeAnalyzer.unittest.js, test/unitCases/ScopeAnalyzerParity.unittest.js
Scopes now store blockType and blockStart. Scope analysis returns shorthand identifier offsets. Tests cover scope identity and shorthand forms.
AST-free concatenation renaming
lib/optimize/ConcatenatedModule.js, lib/javascript/JavascriptModulesPlugin.js, lib/util/concatenate.js, .changeset/041-concatenation-release-ast.md, test/unitCases/getPathInAst.unittest.js
Renaming uses recorded offsets. Concatenation no longer retains module ASTs for this purpose. AST path helpers and their tests are removed.
Shorthand-property regression coverage
test/configCases/concatenate-modules/shorthand-property-collision/*
A module-concatenation test covers shorthand, computed, method, and destructuring-renamed properties.

Comparing base (107ebef) to head (35dad2f). Merging this pull request adds 1 new asset(s).

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 1 1 +193 B +357 B —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 7801 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset that both runs emit changed size — everything below is new or deleted.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2225 test(s), 7802 asset(s), 93 emitted nothing.
