Summary

Found by the rebuild fuzzer. An export const or export default is defined as a value unless its module is in a cycle, which CircularModulesPlugin decides after the module is built, and nothing put that decision in a hash. So when an edit to another file formed or broke a require() cycle around a module, watch kept the old form:

// a.js: import b from "./b.js"; export const value = 1; …
// edit b.js to: exports.keys = Object.keys(require("./a.js"));
before: b.keys → ["keys"] after: ["keys", "value"] (fresh build: ["keys", "value"])

Each export now adds the decision to the hash where it makes it. Over 4 shapes × 2 modes × concatenation on and off × the cycle forming and breaking, main fails 8 of 32 and this change 0; hashing time is unchanged.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: watchCases/cache/cycle-binding-form (export const and export default, memory and filesystem cache); removing either hash fails it.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

I used Claude Code to find the bug with a rebuild fuzzer, write the fix and the tests. I reviewed every change myself.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Webpack now updates a module’s export bindings when a require() cycle forms or breaks, keeping exports accurate during rebuilds with memory or filesystem caching.

An `export const` or `export default` is defined as a value unless the module is in a cycle, which is decided after the module is built and was in no hash. So when another module's edit formed or broke a require() cycle around it, watch kept the old form: mid-cycle, the module showed none of those exports. Hash the decision where each export makes it.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

ESM export dependency hashes now include a marker for the selected binding form, based on whether the parent module is circular. A new watch-cache case checks export keys across cycle states with memory and filesystem caches.

Changes

Cycle-sensitive export binding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hash export binding form
lib/dependencies/esm/ESMExportExpressionDependency.js, lib/dependencies/esm/ESMExportSpecifierDependency.js, .changeset/023-cycle-export-binding-form.md
Both dependency types hash "value" when the parent module’s buildInfo.isCircular is exactly false, and "getter" otherwise. The specifier dependency does not update the hash when constValue is undefined.
Exercise cycle changes in watch cache
test/watchCases/cache/cycle-binding-form/*
The watch case adds modules that observe export keys during require cycles. Its assertions check export keys and expect observed keys only when WATCH_STEP === "1". The configuration runs production builds with memory and filesystem caches.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3c71e

The change tracks cycle-dependent export bindings, and the watch case checks those transitions with memory and filesystem caches. No merge-blocking risk was identified; the PR is ready for normal checks.

Without a cycle a module's getters come before its values in its keys, so the order shows a getter kept stale after the cycle broke, which the case did not check. It now starts with the cycle, breaks it, then forms it again.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

ℹ️ 28 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,

(by [@Eshiv-Pandey](https://github.com/Eshiv-Pandey) in [#22280](webpack/webpack#22280))
