Summary

Treat Node.js ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND as an absent ESM hot update manifest, so checking for updates after applying the latest update succeeds.

Missing manifest: import.meta.webpackHot.check() Result
Before Rejects with ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND
After Resolves to null and stays idle, including repeated checks

The existing missing-manifest cases remain unchanged. The new case maps the test loader's ENOENT to Node.js's native import error code.

Local yarn test:size comparison for the unchanged module/import-meta-hot-priority fixture: bundle0.mjs grows from 42,112 to 42,136 raw bytes and from 7,881 to 7,890 gzip bytes (+9 gzip).

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/hotCases/hmr-download-manifest/module-chunk-loading-module-not-found/{index.js,webpack.config.js}. The regression fails without the fix; all 48 tests in the manifest category pass across Node, async Node, web, and web worker variants. yarn lint passes.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

A patch changeset is included; no other documentation changes are needed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Hot module replacement now handles missing ESM update manifests without throwing an error, keeping checks with no available updates in an idle state.
    • Available ESM updates continue to apply normally, while unrelated errors are still reported.

The ESM HMR runtime now suppresses ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND when loading an update manifest. Tests cover an available update and repeated checks when no update is present.

The test configuration remaps ENOENT errors to ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND. The runtime suppresses that error when loading the HMR update manifest. Tests check update handling and verify that repeated checks without an update return null and leave HMR status idle.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 019f3

In Node.js, ESM hot update checks now return no update instead of failing when the update manifest is missing. The change is narrow, and no blocking issues remain.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

Merging this PR will regress 1 benchmark

⚠️ 108 benchmarks spent significant time in system calls

System calls cannot be consistently instrumented, so they are not included in the measure, which understates the real cost. Please switch to the Walltime instrument to accurately measure system calls.

Measurement and system calls

ℹ️ 31 benchmarks have no flame graph

The flamegraph could not be generated because too much time was spent in runtime internals, making the visualization not useful for performance analysis.

⚠️ Different runtime environments detected

Some benchmarks with significant performance changes were compared across different runtime environments,
which may affect the accuracy of the results.
