Summary

After the parser/printer splits, css/syntax.js and html/syntax.js still re-exported 55 and 35 names from the halves they front. Both surfaces are experimental and no scanned ecosystem package imports either (tooling/deep-webpack-imports.json), so each facade now publishes parser, printer and SourceProcessor only — the shape javascript/syntax.js already had. Every dropped name keeps a home rather than a re-export: helpers move to syntax.parser / syntax.printer, and the ones that were never the syntax module's own become public where they live — util.dataURL, html.builtinEmbeddedRenderer, and css.cssMinify / html.htmlMinify, which the worker-shipped minifiers read back through the public entry.

It also carries one bug fix, kept here because it is in the same printer: script and style hold raw text in the HTML namespace but character data in a foreign one, and the printer decided from the tag name alone. <svg><script>&lt;b&gt;</script></svg> printed a real <b> that broke out of the subtree, and a </style> inside an SVG stylesheet ended the element early and dropped what followed. The namespace now decides it; since an asynchronously rendered body is a placeholder while the walk runs, the escaping rides with the deferred write and is applied to the answer as it lands, so inline CSS is still minified and only escaped on the way out.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor — plus the one fix described above.

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js and test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js assert each facade publishes exactly the three names and that they are the two halves; the foreign-content fix adds two entries to HtmlSyntax.unittest.js's beautify table (which also feeds its tree-preservation invariant) and a case to test/configCases/html/minimize-round-trip/cases/foreign.html — the integration one is what caught the deferred-render path.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No documented API changes. The removed names were undocumented re-exports on a deep, experimental surface; each is now read off syntax.parser / syntax.printer, or from util.dataURL, html.builtinEmbeddedRenderer, css.cssMinify and html.htmlMinify.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The Architecture entries in AGENTS.md for lib/css/, lib/html/ and lib/util/ are updated in this PR; nothing outside the repo documents these deep exports.

Use of AI

AI (Claude Code) was used throughout, supervised by me. It located the re-exports and repointed consumers, ran the repo's own verification (yarn lint, the unit and configCases suites in both the plain and cache variants, and yarn test:invariants), and reported results back for review; the foreign-content defect was reproduced with a failing test before the fix, and I reviewed each diff.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Changes

The syntax facades now expose smaller surfaces. Parser-specific exports move to parser modules, while minifiers and data URL helpers receive direct public exports. Foreign <script> and <style> content is escaped during rendering.

Syntax facade and foreign literal text

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public API facade and consumer migration
lib/css/syntax.js, lib/html/syntax.js, lib/index.js, lib/css/cssMinify.js, lib/html/htmlMinify.js, test/unitCases/*
The syntax facades retain parser, printer, and SourceProcessor access. cssMinify, htmlMinify, builtinEmbeddedRenderer, and dataURL are exposed through direct namespaces. Consumers and facade tests use the new export paths.
Parser module contracts and consumer migration
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/html/syntax-parser.js, lib/html/HtmlGenerator.js, test/*, tooling/*
CSS and HTML whitespace helpers are renamed and exported under their new names. Parser-specific imports move from the facades to parser modules across implementation, tests, benchmarks, helpers, and tooling.
Foreign literal text escaping
lib/html/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, test/configCases/html/minimize-round-trip/*
Literal-text handling is centralized. Embedded output in non-HTML namespaces is escaped, with tests covering foreign SVG script and style content.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset with an untouched test changed size — every change below comes with a test this pull request edited.

…orts

`css/syntax.js` and `html/syntax.js` re-exported 55 and 35 names from the
halves they front. Both surfaces are `experimental`, no scanned ecosystem
package imports either, so the facades now publish `parser`, `printer` and
`SourceProcessor` and nothing else.

Every dropped name keeps a home rather than a re-export: what a caller reaches
for goes through `syntax.parser` / `syntax.printer`, and the helpers that were
never the syntax module's own are published where they live -- `util.dataURL`
for the embedded-source helpers, `html.builtinEmbeddedRenderer`, and
`css.cssMinify` / `html.htmlMinify` for the two minify entry points, which the
worker-shipped minifiers read back through the public entry.

Two aliases the halves carried are spelled out at the same time:
`_isWhiteSpace` becomes `isWhitespace` and HTML's `isSpace` becomes
`isAsciiWhitespace`.
`script` and `style` hold raw text in the HTML namespace and character data
in a foreign one, so the printer decided from the tag name alone and wrote an
SVG or MathML body back unescaped. `<svg><script>&lt;b&gt;</script></svg>`
printed a real `<b>` that broke out of the subtree, and a `</style>` inside an
SVG stylesheet ended the element early, dropping what followed.

The namespace now decides it. A body the caller renders asynchronously is a
placeholder while the walk runs, so the escaping rides with the deferred write
and is applied to the answer as it lands -- the path a real build takes, where
the inline CSS is still minified, only escaped on the way out.

[Compare Source](webpack/webpack@v5.111.1...v5.112.0)

##### Minor Changes

- Apply `plugins` set on a multi-configuration array to the `MultiCompiler`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22702](webpack/webpack#22702))

- Add `optimization.minimize.css.dropOverriddenDeclarations`, dropping a declaration a later one overrides where no target is named. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22175](webpack/webpack#22175))

- Export more plugins under their scope, move eleven loose exports under theirs, deprecate the old, and expose `template.DependencyTemplate`, `module.NullFactory` and `util.makeSerializable`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22261](webpack/webpack#22261))

- Let `util.makeSerializable` take several requests, current one first. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22340](webpack/webpack#22340))

- Emit the source map `scopes` field, so a debugger resolves imported ESM bindings by name. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21999](webpack/webpack#21999))

- Add `library.entryExports: "all"` to expose the exports of every entry module. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22235](webpack/webpack#22235))

- Recognize a required `const` binding assigned to `exports` as a re-export. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22276](webpack/webpack#22276))

- Accept glob patterns in more path, module and file filter options. (by [@&#8203;hai-x](https://github.com/hai-x) in [#&#8203;22422](webpack/webpack#22422))

- Bundle a run of inline `<script>` tags into one chunk the page can inline. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22188](webpack/webpack#22188))

- Add `module.parser.javascript.topLevelThis` for classic-script `this` semantics. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22193](webpack/webpack#22193))

- Add `module.parser.html.chunkName` and a `webpackChunkName` comment for tags. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22200](webpack/webpack#22200))

- Add `include`/`exclude` version and request filters to shared modules. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22297](webpack/webpack#22297))

- Keep module side-effect information in ESM output as PURE annotations. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21789](webpack/webpack#21789))

- Add `optimization.splitChunks.dedupDepth` to discover chunk intersections. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22240](webpack/webpack#22240))

- Add `optimization.minimizeOptions.json`, on by default with `futureDefaults`. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22286](webpack/webpack#22286))

- Add `SSRManifestPlugin` and fix server-rendered CSS collection and adoption. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;21913](webpack/webpack#21913))

stating the same condition; read what a condition declares.

- Escape a foreign `<script>` or `<style>` body, which is character data. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22233](webpack/webpack#22233))

- Name the runtime module whose generation fails while hashing. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22203](webpack/webpack#22203))

- Rebuild a module in watch when its missing unused dependencies swap. (by [@&#8203;alexander-akait](https://github.com/alexander-akait) in [#&#8203;22693](webpack/webpack#22693))
