Motivation

  • Provide an alternative parse-mode that treats input as XML instead of applying the WHATWG HTML tree-construction rules so consumers can parse XML-like inputs (preserve case, qualified names, PI/DOCTYPE semantics, CDATA, and explicit empty-element handling).
  • Keep the existing HTML parsing behavior unchanged while letting callers opt into XML semantics via an option.
  • Surface the new mode through types and the public API so tooling and callers can enable it safely.

Description

  • Introduce NS_XML and an xmlMode flag to the parser, and implement a processXml token dispatch that appends elements case-sensitively, handles self-closing tags, processing instructions, CDATA and DOCTYPE nodes under XML rules, and closes elements only by matching case-sensitive end tags.
  • Make existing tokenizer/handler paths conditional on xmlMode so name internment and lowercasing are bypassed for tag and attribute names, doctype name folding is disabled, CDATA handling and PI recognition allow XML behavior, and currentNodeIsForeign/vetoesContentMode respect XML mode.
  • Export NS_XML and add xml?: boolean to HtmlParseOptions / HtmlProcessOptions typedefs and types.d.ts so the option is available to callers and tooling.
  • Update the HTML printer typedef to include the xml option and add many unit tests in test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js (new XML mode suite) covering scaffolding suppression, case-preservation, empty-element vs paired tags, void-element differences, lack of HTML repairs, PI/DTD handling, CDATA and entity decoding, qualified names, and AST skip behavior.

Testing

  • Ran the HTML unit test file test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, including the new XML mode test suite exercising parsing, PIs, CDATA, DOCTYPEs, and AST skip options, and all tests passed.
  • Ran the project unit test suite after changes to ensure no regressions in existing HTML parsing tests, and the full suite passed.

Codex Task

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an XML parsing mode that follows XML rather than HTML parsing rules, preserving case-sensitive names and self-closing elements.
    • Supports processing instructions, comments, CDATA, doctypes, character references, and declared internal entities and attribute defaults.
    • XML output can be minified or beautified, with XML-appropriate escaping and self-closing tags. Empty elements and document-level comments and processing instructions are preserved where applicable.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the XML parsing option and its behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

The parser adds an xml option for XML tree construction and printing. XML mode preserves case-sensitive names, handles XML content and internal DTD declarations, and uses XML-specific serialization. The change also adds XML conformance tests and comparison tooling.

Changes: XML parsing support

Layer / File(s) Summary
XML tokenization and tree construction
lib/html/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js
XML mode adds a dedicated tokenizer and tree-processing path. It handles XML names, nesting, content, character references, and internal DTD entities and attribute declarations. Unit tests cover parsing, malformed input, limits, and tokenizer callbacks.
XML serialization
lib/html/syntax-parser.js, lib/html/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/HtmlSyntax.unittest.js, .changeset/020-html-syntax-xml-mode.md
The printer adds XML output for elements, text, comments, doctypes, and processing instructions. Tests cover minification, beautification, and incomplete markup. The changeset documents the new mode.
XML conformance tests
test/specCases/xmlconf.spectest.js, package.json, .github/workflows/test.yml, .gitmodules, AGENTS.md, codecov.yml, .prettierignore, cspell.json, eslint.config.mjs
The new spec suite checks canonical output and printer round trips against the XML conformance corpus. Scripts and CI configuration run the suite and upload its coverage.
XML comparison and invariant tooling
tooling/compare-xml-tools.js, tooling/comparison/xml-tool-comparison/*, test/unitCases/CompareXmlTools.unittest.js, package.json, .github/workflows/test.yml, .github/dependabot.yml, AGENTS.md, codecov.yml, cspell.json, eslint.config.mjs
The comparison tool measures XML parsers and printers and checks parser and printer invariants over available fixtures. Scripts, dependencies, tests, and CI configuration support the comparisons.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Support XML name-start characters.

With xml: true, STATE_TAG_OPEN accepts only isAsciiAlpha(cc). Valid names such as <_root/> and <élement/> therefore remain text. Matching end tags also fail: the </ fast path accepts only ASCII letters, and other starts enter the bogus-comment path. Apply XML name-start validation to both tag-open paths, and add coverage for underscore-prefixed and non-ASCII element names.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Accept XML NameChar values in the PI-target scanner.

In XML mode, _scanProcessingInstruction accepts only ASCII letters or _ as the first target character, then only ASCII alphanumeric characters, -, and _. It therefore rejects valid targets such as ns:pi and non-ASCII XML names. The scanner returns PI_SCAN_COMMENT, so the input does not become a processing-instruction node. Use XML NameStartChar and NameChar rules for PI targets when xmlMode is enabled. Add regression cases for <?ns:pi data?> and other valid XML target characters.

Inline comments:
In @.changeset/020-html-syntax-xml-mode.md:
- Line 5: Shorten the changeset summary describing the `xml` mode for
`html.syntax` to 80 characters or fewer while preserving its meaning.

In `@AGENTS.md`:
- Line 544: Update the XML-specific guidance in AGENTS.md to state that
test:xmlconf may register no-op tests and pass when its submodule is absent, so
a passing run without that submodule does not indicate conformance coverage.
Keep the existing submodule setup instructions intact.

In `@lib/html/syntax-parser.js`:
- Around line 9276-9279: In _dispatchXmlText, preserve the enclosing parse’s
eofInTag value around the nested tokenizeXml call and restore it afterward, so
errors in entity replacement text do not suppress later main-document start
tags.

Parse `xml: true` with a dedicated XML tokenizer instead of the WHATWG one,
which ended a DOCTYPE at its first `>`: internal subsets now read whole, their
general entities (markup included, bounded against expansion bombs) and
ATTLIST defaults apply, attribute values normalize per §3.3.3, and misnested
end tags recover. The printer writes XML back rather than HTML.

Hold it to the W3C XML Conformance Test Suite (new submodule and a
`parser (xml)` CI leg), and add `tooling/compare-xml-tools.js` with its
invariants gated in the `invariants` job.

Keep the HTML handlers byte-identical to what they were: XML tokens go to
XML handlers that dispatch straight to processXml, so the HTML per-token path
carries no XML branch.

Scope `eofInTag` to the nested tokenize of an entity's replacement text, so
later start tags are not dropped; shorten the changeset and note that
`xmlconf` passes as a no-op without its submodule.

The XML printer offers the embedded renderer a `<style>` body and a
`style=""` value, both synchronously and deferred, but only on elements
whose resolved namespace is SVG or XHTML, where they are CSS. The XML
comparison's webpack row now runs with the built-in renderer a build uses.

Read `type` the way the HTML printer does: absent, empty or `text/css`,
so a `text/less` sheet in an SVG is left as written.

While the XML minimizer is on (futureDefaults, or `minimizeOptions.xml`),
`cssMinify` and `htmlMinify` hand an `image/svg+xml` data URL to it through
`builtinEmbeddedRenderer({ svg: true })`, keeping the answer only where it
is shorter. A tie between attribute quotes takes `'` (`xmlQuote`), since the
URL usually sits in `"`. An inline HTML `<svg>` is now offered with
`as: "foreign-element"` so the built-in renderer keeps declining it.
