Summary

Minifying a large asset through the printer (printer: true, a future default) peaked higher than minifying through terser as published. Isolating the phases showed it was the parse phase, for two reasons:

  • It kept webpack's whole tree alive while building terser's. A node's children are dead once it is converted, so they are dropped there.
  • Its HTML-comment guard read a template's text as source, so an asset holding <!-- or --> in a template declined — after paying for the parse — and terser parsed it again. webpack's own bundle does this, in `<!-- webpack error: ${safe} -->`. The guard now runs after the template text is taken.

Peak RSS, default options, all printer phases, output byte-identical:

asset before after
typescript.js (9.1 MiB) 1436 MiB 1148 MiB
webpack's own bundle (17.6 MiB) 2266 MiB 2175 MiB

Wall time is unchanged (26–28 s either way, inside the spread). webpack's own bundle keeps only part of the win because it declines later, on a string holding a line continuation.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/unitCases/syntax-printer-parse.unittest.js gains a case for the HTML comment sequences a literal holds as text, which now builds terser's own tree. The release is covered by every case there, each of which compares the converted tree field by field, and by test:minify-corpora over terser's corpus.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used, through Claude Code: it isolated the peak per phase, found both causes, wrote the patch and the test case, and ran the printer unit tests, test:minify-corpora and yarn lint. Every number above is from a run on this branch, and the diff was reviewed before pushing.

Generated by Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed handling of HTML-comment sequences in template literals so they don’t incorrectly affect parsing; comment sequences outside template text still prevent conversion.
    • Improved memory usage when converting syntax trees, reducing peak memory during webpack minification.
    • Added coverage for BigInt keys and comment-like sequences in templates, strings, and regular expressions.

The parse phase builds webpack's own tree and terser's, and held the
first whole while converting. A node's children are dead once it is
converted, so drop them there: peak RSS falls 1436 -> 1148 MiB on
typescript.js (9.1 MiB) and 2266 -> 2175 MiB on webpack's own bundle,
byte-identical output.

The HTML-comment guard also read a template's text as source, so any
bundle holding `<!--` or `-->` in a template declined after paying for
the parse; it now runs after the template text is taken.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The printer changes HTML-comment detection for template text and clears object-valued fields on converted ESTree nodes. Parser-comparison cases and a patch changeset are added.

Changes

Printer parsing and conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Template text parsing and regression cases
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/syntax-printer-parse.unittest.js
HTML-comment detection now runs after template-text handling. Parser-comparison cases cover BigInt keys and HTML-comment sequences in templates, interpolations, strings, and regular expressions.
ESTree node release after conversion
lib/javascript/syntax-printer.js, .changeset/046-printer-parse-peak-memory.md
from calls convert, releases object-valued fields on the source ESTree node, and returns the converted Terser node. The changeset declares a webpack patch release and describes a peak-memory reduction during printer minification.

Suggested labels: area: build-perf

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 30c81

This change aims to preserve template text containing HTML-comment sequences while reducing parse-phase memory. The checked release path does not mutate the returned Terser tree, and no actionable merge risk remains beyond normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 30c81

The inspected change reduces memory use without a demonstrated weakening of security controls or caller isolation. Failed conversion still falls back using the original input.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected exposure remains source parsing and temporary AST memory within minification. Accepting template text through this conversion path does not introduce a new authority-bearing caller or execute that text during conversion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The HTML-comment guard distinguishes template text from source tokens; matching tokens outside template text still decline conversion, and actual HTML-style comments are also rejected by the comment callback. Caller-provided AST forms bypass the string converter and its destructive release.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.
