Summary

A chroma of zero in Lab or Oklch is neutral in that space but reaches sRGB a residue away from neutral — Chromium 141 lands up to 9.5e-5 of a channel off, webpack 1.97e-8 — and each residue names a different hue, which then interpolates at full weight however small the chroma stating it is. _isGray tolerates 1e-9, so the mix folded on webpack's own last bits: color-mix(in hsl, lch(50 0 200) 50%, oklch(.280497 .052616 353.043)) printed a color painting 96,83,68 where Chromium paints 71,68,96. Such a mix is now left as written, as is one where a gray states a hue of its own — Chrome reads that hue as missing and takes the other color's while Firefox keeps it, which is the divergence FILED_COLOR_REWRITES carried and this removes. A gray that reached sRGB through no conversion states no hue at all, so those mixes still fold.

Over 1200 random color-mix() values painted in Chromium, main folds 26 that disagree by more than a byte and this folds none.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — two cases in test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, both confirmed failing on unmodified lib/ first. No configCases/ snapshot moves, so nothing webpack emits for the test corpus changes.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — it declines a fold rather than changing one, so the minified CSS is either the same or the source as written.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It took the filed Firefox divergence as a starting point, measured Chromium's own conversions and hues through relative color syntax to find the residue behind it, wrote the guards against the margin yarn measure:color-agreement already established, and swept 1200 mixes against a real browser to check none still disagrees. I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved color-mix() handling for gray colors whose hue may vary due to color-space conversion.
    • Prevented potentially incorrect color simplification when browsers interpret stated or conversion-derived hues differently.
    • Improved cross-browser consistency for color-mix rendering and color rewrite behavior.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for gray colors in Lab, Oklch, sRGB, and HWB color spaces.
    • Updated browser compatibility expectations for affected color transformations.

Generated code size

Comparing base (0af51c4) to head (a35e024). Merging this pull request will not change the code webpack generates.

What moved Tests Assets Gzip Raw Test edit
Changed, test untouched 0 0 — — —
Changed, test edited 0 0 — — —
New 0 0 — — —
Deleted 0 0 — — —
Unchanged — 7745 — — —

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2194 test(s), 7745 asset(s), 87 emitted nothing.

the export helpers where the entry is not inlined.
