Summary

CSS Color 4 states the two channels after the hue as <percentage> | <number>, so hsl(120 50 50) is the color hsl(120 50% 50%) names — but the fold required a % on both and declined everything else, leaving that spelling unminified. Found while comparing the css-parsing-tests color corpus, where it accounts for 500 cases per function. Only the space-separated form takes a bare number; the legacy comma form is percentages alone, so hsl(120, 50, 50) is still declined rather than handed a color, and the byte-boundary guard is untouched.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

perf

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — test/configCases/css/minimize-colors gains the folding case and the declined legacy-comma case.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used throughout, under review at each step. It found the gap while building a color-corpus comparison, located the % requirement, and checked the two adjacent behaviours before changing anything — confirming that hwb(90 10% 20%) declining to fold is the byte-boundary guard working rather than a second bug, and that the legacy comma grammar had to stay strict. Every claim was verified by running it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved CSS color minification for modern space-separated hsl() and hwb() syntax using numeric channel values.
    • Preserved legacy comma-separated syntax when channel values lack percentage units, preventing invalid colors from being incorrectly folded.
    • Prevented minification of color functions that mix comma- and space-separated syntax or use invalid separators.
    • Preserved comma-separated lch() and oklch() values rather than folding invalid syntax.

CSS Color 4 states the two channels after the hue as `<percentage> | <number>`,
so `hsl(120 50 50)` is the color `hsl(120 50% 50%)` names. The fold required a
`%` on both and declined everything else, leaving 500 css-parsing-tests cases
per function — and any stylesheet written in the modern grammar — unminified.

The separator decides it: only the space-separated form takes a bare number,
where the legacy comma form is percentages alone, so folding `hsl(120, 50, 50)`
would hand invalid CSS a color. The byte-boundary guard is untouched, so a
channel an engine would round either way is still declined.

In minimize-lightningcss-values both spellings now fold to the same rule, so
the duplicate elimination keeps the later one — which is why the output moves
between two labelled entries there.

The parser validates complete modern and legacy separator grammars before folding color functions. Bare numeric channels remain valid only in modern space-separated HSL/HWB syntax. Fixtures cover mixed separators and invalid comma forms. The changeset documents the patch.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas, so adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2224 test(s), 7801 asset(s), 93 emitted nothing.

`_COLOR_ARGUMENT_RE` states the runs between the separators without saying
which separator stood there, so every spelling collapsed to the same
argument list and a mixed one folded: `hsl(120, 50% 50%)` became `#40bf40`,
and `lch(50, 20, 30)` and `oklch(0.5, 0.1, 30)` folded although the Lab
family was specified after the legacy form and has no comma grammar at all.
Each is a declaration an engine drops, so folding it changed what rendered.

The arguments are now checked against the two grammars CSS Color 4 states —
`A B C` with an optional `/ D`, and the legacy `A, B, C` with an optional
`, D`, which `hsl()` alone among these functions has. That subsumes the
percentage guard this branch added, which asked `inner.includes(",")`.

`rgb()` reads its arguments through a scanner of its own in
`_minifyColorFunction` and has the same defect; it is left for its own
change rather than widened into this one.

* fix(css): read an rgb()'s separator grammar before folding it

`_minifyColorFunction` cuts on whitespace, `,` and `/` in one pass without
recording which separator stood where, so every spelling collapsed to the
same argument list: `rgb(1, 2 3)`, `rgb(1 2, 3)`, `rgb(1 2 3, .5)`,
`rgb(1, 2, 3 / .5)`, `rgb(1 2 3 .5)` and `rgb(1 / 2 / 3)` all folded to a
color. Each is a declaration an engine drops, so folding it changed what
rendered.

This is the defect #22242 fixed for `hsl()`, `hwb()` and the Lab family,
left out of that change because `rgb()` reads its arguments through a
scanner of its own. The same two grammars decide it — the modern `A B C`
with an optional `/ D`, and the legacy `A, B, C` with an optional `, D`,
both of which `rgb()` has — so the check is the pair of regexps that change
already added, applied after the scan rather than before it, where only a
plausible color reaches it.

The pending changeset for #22242 covers this, so it is widened rather than
duplicated.

* chore(changeset): keep the color entry within the length limit

The union of the two color fixes ran to 148 characters, where
`.changeset/**` asks for one imperative sentence of 80 or fewer. Both
facts still fit: the unitless channels that now fold, and the separator
grammar that decides whether anything folds at all.

* test(javascript): assert what load() owes, not what Deno can import

`should install onto terser` asserted that under Deno `phases` is empty,
because Deno could not import terser's own sources when the test was
written. It sometimes can, and then the test fails — it went red once on
#22243, a pull request touching only CSS fixtures, and cost a re-run of a
21-minute job to establish it was not that change's doing.

Which sources a runtime reaches is the one thing `load` is written to
tolerate: it catches any failure and hands back terser's published entry
point. So the runtime is the wrong thing to assert. What `load` owes
everywhere is that it installed phases this build declares and nothing
else, and Node, which always reaches the sources, still owes the whole
set — both of which this now states.

The fallback path stays covered by behaviour rather than by a hardcoded
outcome: every `should mangle exactly as terser does` case compares
webpack's `minify` against terser's own, whichever way `load` resolved.
