Summary

The CSS minifier kept every autoprefixed 2009-draft flexbox copy (-webkit-box-align, -moz-box-pack, display: -webkit-box, …) even for modern targets, because BCD lists them as separate properties. They are now treated as legacy spellings of align-items, justify-content, order, flex and flex-direction, with the keywords the draft renamed. They are dropped where no target needs them and written for targets that only read them; a block with no standard twin (line clamp) is kept. Foundation shrinks 176 B gzip and Materialize 113 B, and no other benchmark:css-tools fixture changes.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: new test/configCases/css/minimize-vendor-prefixes-flexbox-2009/ (Android 4.3 / Firefox 20 targets), new rules in minimize-vendor-prefixes/style.css, and an updated CssSyntax.unittest.js case.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved CSS vendor-prefix handling for legacy 2009 flexbox declarations, including supported browser-specific spellings and numeric values such as order.
    • Unsupported legacy spellings and values are no longer treated as standard property aliases or emitted as prefixed declarations.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for legacy flexbox declarations and their handling during CSS minimization.

WebKit and Gecko shipped the 2009 flexbox draft under display: -webkit-box
and -moz-box, with every property renamed (-webkit-box-align for
align-items, -webkit-box-pack for justify-content, and so on). BCD files
those as properties of their own that modern engines still read, so a
modern target kept every autoprefixed copy. They are now stated as the
legacy spellings of the properties that replaced them, with the keywords
the draft renamed: dropped beside the standard property where no target
needs them, and written for the targets that read only them. A block
with no standard twin, like a line clamp, keeps its own.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CSS prefix data now includes 2009 flexbox draft spellings, legacy value mappings, browser version windows, and numeric offsets. CSS syntax parsing and printing handle these spellings. Unit and configuration tests cover generated declarations and minified output for legacy browser targets.

Changes

2009 Flexbox Prefix Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Legacy flexbox data and parsing
tooling/generate-css-data.js, lib/css/syntax-parser.js, .changeset/033-css-flexbox-2009-prefixes.md
Generated data adds legacy flexbox property and display spellings, keyword mappings, browser windows, and numeric offsets. The parser uses numeric offsets for supported unsigned decimal values when no keyword mapping applies.
Prefixed alias handling
lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js
The printer skips selected prefixed spellings when it builds the standard-property map. Unit tests cover legacy output for order and flex values, including values that produce no copy.
Browser-targeted minimizer coverage
test/configCases/css/minimize-vendor-prefixes-flexbox-2009/*, test/configCases/css/minimize-vendor-prefixes/style.css
The configuration test targets Android 4.3 and Firefox 20 and compares minified CSS with a snapshot. Its fixtures cover legacy flexbox declarations alongside standard properties and a -webkit-line-clamp case.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to df1f0

The previously identified fallback and test-convention concerns are resolved at the reviewed head. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7f219

The change affects CSS output for selected browser targets, but the reviewed path does not introduce a new input route, privilege, or sensitive operation. Security risk appears low; security coverage is not complete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The effective exposure is CSS produced by builds using the minifier and relevant browser targets. The inspected change does not establish expanded tenant, credential, service, or data-store authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — CSS input continues through the existing public minification path to emitted CSS. The inspected generator, printer, and fixture changes do not establish a new caller or bypass of an identity or privilege control.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset with an untouched test changed size — every change below comes with a test this pull request edited.

Snapshot the printed CSS output.

This assertion compares printed output with a literal. Use toMatchInlineSnapshot for this output.

As per path instructions, test/** says “Snapshot printed output; use explicit expect() for behavior.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Generate a usable box-flex fallback for numeric flex values.

When the input contains flex: 1 and a target needs the 2009 spelling, PREFIXED_SPELLING_KEYWORDS gives -webkit-box-flex an empty map. lib/css/syntax-parser.js then returns no prefixed declaration for 1. The target loses the intended flexibility because it cannot use the standard declaration. Convert supported shorthand values to an appropriate numeric box-flex value, or do not advertise this spelling as a fallback. The 2009 property accepts a number, not the modern flex shorthand. A target reading only the 2009 names got no copy of flex or order, since
those read a number where the standard property reads more. The copy now
takes the standard value's first component when it is a plain non-negative
number, plus one for box-ordinal-group (it counts from 1), with auto and none
as 1 and 0 for box-flex.
