Summary

Fixes two minifier bugs that #22489 shipped. CodeRabbit found both while reviewing #22513.

  1. border:none was written as border:0. none sets the width to medium, so a later rule that sets only the style shows a 3px border. With 0 that border disappeared.
/* input */  .a{border:none}.a.b{border-style:solid}
/* before */ .a{border:0}.a.b{border-style:solid}      /* .a.b: no border */
/* after */  .a{border:none}.a.b{border-style:solid}   /* .a.b: 3px solid, as written */
  1. A gradient fallback was dropped when the later gradient used a unit the target can't read. Only the gradient function's support was checked. Each unit is now checked against browser-compat-data, which the CSS data generator now includes.
/* safari 15 target */
/* input */  .a{background-image:linear-gradient(red 10vh,blue);background-image:linear-gradient(red 10dvh,blue)}
/* before */ .a{background-image:linear-gradient(red 10dvh,blue)}   /* Safari 15 has no dvh: no background */
/* after */ unchanged; Safari 16, which reads dvh, still drops the fallback

Cost over 72 real-world stylesheets (modern target): +536 B gzip, +526 B brotli (+0.02%). The output is still 20,496 B gzip smaller than lightningcss.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes. test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js covers a lone none across rules and gradient units per target. test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js adds a browser case where a later rule gives a border:none element a style. All of the new tests fail on main and pass here.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSS minification now preserves border: none and related border declarations, avoiding changes to computed border styles or widths.
    • Gradient fallbacks are retained when selected browsers do not support the units used by a later gradient declaration, and removed when those units are supported.

… a target cannot read

A lone `none` sets a border's width to `medium`, which a later rule's style
shows as 3px, so writing it as `0` hid that border. A gradient's support was
read by its function alone, so a fallback before one using `dvh` was dropped
for Safari 15; each unit is now checked against browser-compat-data.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add generated CSS unit support profiles, use target unit support to check gradient readability, and preserve none in border shorthand output. Tests cover gradient fallbacks and border lowering.

Changes

CSS minification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generate unit support profiles
tooling/generate-css-data.js, cspell.json
The generator collects length and angle unit support profiles and includes them in emitted value-support data. The spelling dictionary adds the corresponding unit names.
Check gradient units against target support
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js
Gradient amount parsing captures units and checks non-percentage units against target support. Tests cover Safari fallback behavior, unknown units, and absolute lengths.
Preserve none in border shorthands
lib/css/syntax-printer.js, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, test/unitCases/CssSyntax.unittest.js, .changeset/106-css-minify-border-none-gradient-units.md
Border shorthand collapsing no longer converts a lone none to 0. Lowering and unit tests expect none; the changeset records the updates.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0a408

The border and gradient fixes look sound. However, regenerating the CSS data fails with the version range of the browser compatibility data the project already allows. Update the unit-name parsing to accept both description formats before merging.

official @mdn/browser-compat-data v8.1.4 css/types/length.json container_query_length_units viewport_percentage_units description format

💡 Result:

In **`@mdn/browser-compat-data` v8.1.4**, both are entries under `css.types.length`, each with a `__compat` object.

- **`container_query_length_units`** — description: `Container query length units \`cqw\`, \`cqh\`, \`cqi\`, \`cqb\`, \`cqmin\`, \`cqmax\``
- **`viewport_percentage_units`** — **not an entry in this version**. Instead, viewport units are split into `viewport_percentage_units_dynamic`, `viewport_percentage_units_large`, and `viewport_percentage_units_small`, with descriptions listing their respective units. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mdn/browser-compat-data/v8.1.4/css/types/length.json))

The file’s format is JSON: each feature entry’s `__compat` contains fields such as `description`, `spec_url`, `tags`, `support`, and `status`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mdn/browser-compat-data/v8.1.4/css/types/length.json))

- 2: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mdn/browser-compat-data/v8.1.4/css/types/length.json

Support both BCD description syntaxes.

The declared @mdn/browser-compat-data range includes v8.1.4, whose grouped unit descriptions use Markdown backticks. The current regex matches only <code> tags, so collectUnitSupport() finds no units and throws during CSS data generation. Retain <code> support for older installed data.

Review comment at @tooling/generate-css-data.js at line 5715:
Update the description parsing in collectUnitSupport to recognize both HTML code
tags and Markdown backtick syntax, while retaining support for existing
HTML-formatted data. Collect the matched unit from whichever syntax is present
so grouped unit descriptions are parsed successfully.

Generated code size

Comparing base (e7adf94) to head (0a40893). Merging this pull request changes the size of 6 asset(s) whose tests it leaves untouched.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.
