Summary

#22128 dropped five entries from INITIAL_VALUE_KEYWORDS where Chromium reads the property's initial keyword apart from initial. Now that #22155 has the suite asking Gecko and WebKit too, the same audit over all three finds three more, each on a property the other engines do not implement: Gecko computes auto for font-synthesis-position: initial where the spec says none, and WebKit computes normal for grid-auto-flow where it says row and text for -webkit-user-select where the standard user-select computes auto everywhere. The standard spelling is what comes out for that last one, since _standardSpelling is what the value rules run on.

With these out, every entry the table still holds computes what initial does in all three engines — 280 of them answerable in Chromium, 235 in Gecko, 250 in WebKit, 287 in at least one.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — configCases/css/minify-initial-keyword-engine-gap gains the three, beside the properties whose keyword each engine does read as initial. Removing any one of the three from the supplement fails the case, which I checked by doing it.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No — the three now print what the source wrote.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

n/a

Use of AI

AI was used. It measured all 346 entries against Chromium, Gecko and WebKit, narrowed the finding to the names the printer actually looks up, wrote the change and the cases, and broke each one to check the case catches it. I reviewed the result.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved CSS minification for selected properties using the initial keyword.
    • Preserves initial declarations when browser engines interpret equivalent values differently, improving cross-browser consistency.
    • Corrected handling for properties including font synthesis positioning, grid auto-flow, and user selection.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage to verify generated CSS retains the expected initial values across supported browser engines.

Asking one engine found five of these; asking all three finds three more.
Gecko computes `auto` for `font-synthesis-position:initial` where the spec
says `none`, and WebKit `normal` for `grid-auto-flow` and `text` for
`-webkit-user-select` where the standard `user-select` computes `auto`
everywhere — the standard spelling goes, since the value rules run on it.

Walkthrough

The CSS data supplement now preserves three additional engine-sensitive initial keywords. Regression fixtures and syntax-equivalence checks cover the behavior, and a patch changeset records the release.

Changes

CSS initial keyword handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record engine-sensitive initial keywords
tooling/generate-css-data.js
Adds font-synthesis-position, grid-auto-flow, and user-select to the engine-sensitive initial keyword list and documents their computed values.
Validate minification and syntax equivalence
test/configCases/css/minify-initial-keyword-engine-gap/*, test/specCases/syntaxEquivalence.spectest.js, .changeset/034-css-initial-gecko-webkit.md
Adds four CSS declarations and assertions for preserved initial values, removes a prior Firefox-only equivalence exception, and declares a patch release.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a boundary-aware assertion for user-select.

expect(css).toContain("user-select:initial") also matches the substring in -webkit-user-select:initial. The test can pass when the unprefixed declaration is rewritten or removed. Assert the .k rule or match declaration boundaries.

Suggested fix
-		expect(css).toContain("user-select:initial");
+		expect(css).toMatch(/(?:^|[{};])user-select:initial(?:[;}]|$)/);
