Summary

Fixes #22030 (follow-up to #22036). A @value now always resolves first, then normal CSS Modules logic applies — the same for local and imported values:

  • @keyframes / @counter-style / @container / local() / a .class or #id selector named by a @value is scoped and exported under the name it resolves to (previously pulseAnim was never exported, and imported values were never scoped).
  • A value that resolves to a non-name or a keyword of the property (1s, linear) is substituted, not scoped (previously a local one became app-…-1s).
  • A value that is not one identifier where a name is declared warns, instead of a false "Conflicting CSS module export".
/* values.module.css */ @value iAnim: importedAnim; @value iDur: 2s;
/* style.module.css */
@value lAnim: localAnim; @value lDur: 1s;
@value iAnim, iDur from "./values.module.css";
@keyframes lAnim {…}  @keyframes iAnim {…}
.l { animation: lAnim lDur linear; }  .i { animation: iAnim iDur linear; }
CSS new exports
before @keyframes app-…-localAnim, @keyframes importedAnim; .l { animation: app-…-localAnim app-…-1s app-…-linear }, .i { animation: importedAnim 2s linear } —
after @keyframes app-…-localAnim, @keyframes app-…-importedAnim; .l { animation: app-…-localAnim 1s linear }, .i { animation: app-…-importedAnim 2s linear } localAnim, importedAnim

Performance, real production builds, main vs this branch, fresh interleaved processes:

fixture build (warm, n=32) retained heap (n=5)
120 CSS modules, no @value (output byte-identical) 229.6 ± 19.5 → 228.4 ± 30.4 ms 38.17 → 37.77 MB
150 modules, ~200 @values each 2115 ± 150 → 1645 ± 98 ms 170.4 → 143.0 MB

No new per-entry fields; the gain in the second row comes from 12000 false conflict warnings no longer being created.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes — extended test/configCases/css/css-modules-value-at-rule-prelude (local and imported pairs for every case, warnings, snapshots) and added test/watchCases/css/css-modules-imported-value-at-rule-name (exports follow a changed imported value across rebuilds).

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No API change. CSS output changes for imported @values used as names (now scoped in the importing module, like local ones) and for @values resolving to non-names or keywords (no longer scoped). Use global() to keep a name unscoped.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The CSS Modules @value docs could state the rule: a @value resolves first, then is scoped like the name it resolves to.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSS Modules consistently resolve and scope local and imported @value aliases used in selectors, animation names, and other at-rules.
    • Single-name values are exported under their resolved names, while multi-token or invalid values are not exported as class or ID names.
    • Imported aliases reflect changes to their source values during development.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CSS Modules now resolve local and imported @value references before scoping names, selectors, and property values. Export generation follows imported-value chains and produces CSS replacements and JavaScript exports. Tests cover non-identifier values, CSS keywords, warnings, and changed imported names.

Changes

CSS Modules @value Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parser classification and export requests
lib/css/syntax-parser.js, lib/css/CssParser.js
The parser uses isSimpleIdentifier to classify values and creates localized or resolved export entries for @value references in local functions, at-rules, selectors, and known-property values.
Imported-value resolution and export generation
lib/dependencies/css/CssIcssExportDependency.js
The dependency resolves imported-value chains and handles resolved names, selectors, and references. It generates CSS replacements, warnings, and JavaScript exports.
Resolution tests and changeset
test/configCases/css/css-modules-value-at-rule-prelude/*, test/watchCases/css/css-modules-imported-value-at-rule-name/*, .changeset/104-css-value-resolve-then-scope.md
Configuration and watch tests cover resolved at-rule names, selectors, animation values, warnings, and changed imported names. The changeset records the @value updates.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 23e91

This change consistently scopes local CSS Module animation names. The changeset meets repository requirements, and no concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 23e91

The change affects build-time names and exports rather than introducing a new privilege or resource-loading path. Existing identifier handling and output encoding remain in use. Risk is low, but interrupted or concurrent rebuild recovery has not been validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party able to influence CSS source or its imported values can affect generated CSS names and JavaScript export data in consuming modules. The traced path operates within the existing compilation dependency graph; it does not demonstrate newly gained filesystem, service or credential authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The public-entrypoint classification concerns a build-time export template, not a newly exposed service boundary. Import identity and target selection remain represented by dependency objects and module-graph lookups. CSS Modules name scoping is not a general sanitizer for untrusted CSS: textual substitution remains supported, as it was before this change.

Explanation

[#22030] expects pulseAnim to remain unscoped in both the animation reference and @keyframes name. The PR summary says resolved names are scoped, and that animation values and at-rule names use the scoped resolved name. This does not meet the issue’s stated expected output.

"webpack": patch
---

Resolve an imported CSS Modules `@value` and then scope it exactly like a local one: an at-rule, `local()` or selector it names is scoped in the importing module and exported under the resolved name (`@value animName: pulseAnim; @keyframes animName {}` exports `pulseAnim`), a value that resolves to a non-name or a property keyword (`1s`, `linear`) is substituted without scoping, and one that is not a single identifier where a name is declared now warns.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset with an untouched test changed size — every change below comes with a test this pull request edited.

🟡 Minor · Keep imported @value animation names aligned with… · CssIcssExportDependency.js:877-905

lib/dependencies/css/CssIcssExportDependency.js:877-905
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep imported @value animation names aligned with defining-module keyframes.

When a module defines @value animName: pulseAnim and @keyframes animName, and another CSS Module imports animName for animation-name, the two generated names can differ. The defining module emits value-at-rule-prelude-values_module_css-pulseAnim, while the importing module emits value-at-rule-prelude-style_module_css-pulseAnim. The animation then has no matching @keyframes rule.

Resolve the imported alias to the defining module’s localized declaration before applying the consuming module’s scope.
