Summary

Preserve resolution dependencies in the build snapshot of modules using this.importModule or this.loadModule, so cached rebuilds notice resolution changes.

When choice.js is added beside choice/index.js after an unrelated rebuild:

Loader result Before After
Both loader APIs "directory" (stale) "file"

Extracted from feat/incremental-make for independent review against main. Refs #21556.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

fix

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes: test/watchCases/cache/loader-import-module-resolution/ covers both loader APIs. The regression fails on main; 70 targeted watch tests, 78 config/cache tests, and yarn lint pass with the fix.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

Patch changeset added; no public API changes.

Use of AI

Used Codex to extract the fix, adapt the regression tests, and run validation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Loader resolution dependencies are now preserved across cached rebuilds, helping ensure updated files are resolved correctly after changes.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for loader imports that switch from directory-based to file-based resolution across watch rebuilds.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Compilation now records loader resolution dependencies in the origin module’s build information under specified module-creation conditions. A watch-cache test checks loader resolution as the watched build step changes.

Changes

Loader Resolution Dependencies

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record loader resolution dependencies
lib/Compilation.js, .changeset/023-loader-resolution-dependencies.md
When the origin module is being built and is not connected, Compilation adds the factory result’s file, context, and missing dependencies to its build-info sets. The Changeset declares a webpack patch release.
Test loader resolution across rebuilds
test/watchCases/cache/loader-import-module-resolution/*
The loaders resolve ./choice. The test checks that resolution returns "directory" before step 2 and "file" from step 2 onward.

Suggested labels: area: loaders, area: resolving

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 99a31

No actionable merge-blocking issue is established; the change is mergeable after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 99a31

This is a narrowly scoped cache-consistency fix without a new execution or permission boundary. Dependency ownership is preserved on the inspected completion and error paths. Unusual late asynchronous completion during overlapping rebuilds remains insufficiently established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior directly affects origin-module cache invalidation and resulting build output. Loader-controlled requests continue through the same factory and execution path; the production delta adds metadata propagation rather than a new source of requests or an executable sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing loader-execution boundary predates this PR: importModule already resolves its request and invokes executeModule. The added block neither changes that dispatch nor changes the origin supplied by the loader API, providing counterevidence against increased execution authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Successful snapshot completion replaces the mutable dependency accumulators with a snapshot, and queue completion marks the origin done. Loader completion also clears its module reference. These delimit ordinary dependency ownership, but do not establish generation-safe behavior for outstanding callbacks during an overlapping same-compilation rebuild.

Read Changed, test untouched first: the test is byte-identical on both sides, so webpack generated the difference. Changed, test edited moved partly because the test did — Test edit is how many bytes the test gained, and a bundle that grew by less is not a regression. New and Deleted are whole files, not deltas — a new asset was created, not grown, so it reads gray (⚪ added) — and adding tests cannot bury a real change. Gzip decides, because that is what users download; raw is the tiebreak, and brotli and zstd are per asset below.

No asset changed size.

No runtime gained or lost a runtime module.

Built test/configCases with the defaults a user gets: 2308 test(s), 8337 asset(s), 96 emitted nothing.
